There is so much hate for someone the does the basics really well. Demon Slayer,My hero, and JJK as concepts weren’t anything better than other anime but they do most of everything at a above average level so it’s popular. I get tired of people hating on the shows for not being completely revolutionary concepts.

That's one of the reasons I like it. The twists and spins that are done to the character arch types and even the arcs themselves, one of my all time favorite ones is that midoriya doesn't win the tournament arc or even makes it to final 4, yes there are some where the protagonist doesn't win but most of the time it is because of the next section of the arc or something else and I just like how it was handled. Not to mention how many manga series will have an arc that focuses on the antagonists of the story.

I think one of MHA's strong points is character development for sure. The pacing is slow compared to a lot of other shows but it feels realistic and it works without just adding a bunch of filler. I also love how the powers are handled so that they all have some kind of limitation, usually something that's a logical extension of that power (i.e. Mirio falling through the floor vs Shadowcat who can walk normally while intangible). You can have superpowers, but they will have significant consequences. It's rewarding to see how they get creative to overcome the limitations.

"Dark power he tries to repress" Izuku proceeds to use the "dark power" literally 10 seconds later lmao, he almost instantly started training it. The OFA/Nine-Tails comparison isn't really 1 for 1, Nine-Tails is closer to Ichigo's Hollow Ichigo or Itadori with Sukuna, all three of them have this seemingly evil force sealed inside of them that grants them outstanding power, often in dire situations. OFA instead is always treated as a positive thing with outstanding power but also vests massive responsibility in the wielder whether they like it or not. It's more like a reference to the Spiderman thing "with great power comes great responsibility".

Naruto always seemed a like a hotheaded, smart mouth yet a lonely kid who wanted to prove himself to everyone who looked down on him. He wanted to feel excepted which us why he wanted to become hokage but that later changed into a person who grew into more of a selfless person and became hokage to stop war and conflict. Deku always seemed like a character who bears the world on his shoulders. Basically a guy with a white knight complex because of his lack of self worth which is why he was always so sacrifical. Doesn't help that he always compares himself All Might and copies his flawed ideology on a symbol.

How many battle shonen do a *villain focused arc* dedicated to villain vs villain conflict without the protagonists a part of it? A Japanese CEO from Cyberconnect2 even said the MVA arc seemed 'taboo' to show so much of the growth of the villains in shonen jump when it came out in the manga, to be away from the protagonists for so long. Horikoshi-sensei got a lot of push back at first to do the 'My Villain Academia' arc by editors too. Feel free to name other villain arcs in shonen series like that for me if you know some!

I want to disagree that MHA doesn't offer anything new, but I guess I have to begrudgingly admit it doesn't. However, it does one thing better in my opinion than any other shonen or superhero media has done...heroic spirit. Spider-Man has the scene where a building has collapsed on him and he nearly quits but doesn't. Captain America has his "I can do this all day." catch phrase. The Captain Marvel trailer showed her standing up after failing multiple times (then they failed to invoke that emotion in the movie, imo). Goku certainly does it with the spirit bomb scene. Naruto's fight with Sauske at the falls was beyond epic and showed the heroic spirit as he fought to redeem his friend. But MHA does it every single arc. During the sports festival. Then the villain attack on the training center. The Bakugo "rescue" and fight with All-for-One. And so many other scenes I just go back and watch. Just every time around. The emotion and the drive Deku and All-Might invoke, and eventually others. Even the villains like Twice and Shigaraki get to do it. This show makes me root for the bad guys sometimes. That's nuts! I know the good guys will win. I know the outcome before either happens but the show punches me in the feels all the damn time. That's what it does better than ANY other media you can name. It's not new. Other people have done it, but they don't do it as often. They don't do it better.

I think MHA does better in execution (and ye reason I, who stopped watching shonen about a decade ago) because tropewise it throws itself into every "cliché" but find a way around every single one of them, things like the powercreep are explored from a different perspective, we already know potentially Deli have the strongest powers of them all, there won't be an alien dropping from a new planet more stronger who force him to train and get better, he will just need to find a way to control much more of his power without killing himself.

Thank you for validating my feelings on shounen and MHA! I don't actually like MHA, but I get why others like it. I get really tired of shounen unless they do something more interesting, like making the Special BoyTM not interested in power creep (Itadori in JJK) or actual character development (Tanjiro in Demon Slayer). I just tried to watch Black Clover, but it's so boring and I can't deal with Asta's constant yelling and screaming about how he's gonna be the Pirate I MEAN Wizard King. That same premise happens in various ways in Black Clover, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Fate, and many other anime. I know it's not targeting the same audience (or at least the same age group) but MHA also really struck me as an joyful, optimistic, shonen take on the same world depicted in Alan Moore's "Top 10" stories, and I would be surprised if the creator hadn't at least heard of it. It uses the same basic concept of a world where everyone has superpowers, peppered with homages and in-jokes and references to *it's* inspirations and influences, but created instead as a pessimistic police drama with dark humor mixed with gritty violence (because, yanno, Alan Moore) And I am THERE for it, because there are so many possibilities for stories in that kind of world! (tho if I had to pick one to live it I'd prefer MHA's version) And I get that both draw from the same source of inspiration, but if you've read Top 10 you know why I laughed out loud when the dog-headed police captain showed up in MHA... :D

The story structure of bnha is unorthodox in some ways thats good but its definitely hurting how the "overarching story" is building up, i.e. the recent arc. Somehow because we always had these "short arcs", coming to the end saga (like horikoshi declared after the liberation war) doesnt feel so much earned.

What bI love about the Deku Bakugo fight most is that it borrows from a concept in Naruto. Through fighting, rivals can understand each other. By leaving it all on the field, it relieves tension and brings them closer. When I saw Bakugo and Deku on the couch arguing over the previous One for All holders, it showed that they had less tension and were able to speak openly to each other. I think conflict mainly arises when people aren't able to speak freely out of fear or pride. However, in that one on one combat we see with Shonen characters like Deku and Bakugo, the prideful one has to humble himself and raise his view of the other person, and the overcomer has to gain the confidence and learn to see right through the walls of his rival. Even in real life, open communication with people who rub us the wrong way tends to bring out the heart of the person. And in Shonen, that communication comes through the exchange of fists, with no power held back.

I agree that MHA has the shonen tropes... But doesn't every piece in the genre? Yeah, that's why it's a genre. But none other than MHA had made me cry and feel so much for its characters, it takes those tropes and twists them. Don't come and tell me that MHA does nothing revolutionary when it criticizes it own universe at its core (hero society) and it tries to rebuild it from zero (current manga).

one thing that mha does do differently than a lot of other shounen anime is the concept of masculinity and how it's portrayed through mainly deku but also bakugo, eijiro, todoroki (and endeavour) and others it's lack of toxic masculinity and general openness may also be one of the reasons why the fandom (at least seems to be) largely female, in contrast to the dominantly male fandoms of Dragon Ball, Naruto and other shounen idk i just recently saw a video on that and thought I'd add i completely agree with your video btw, it's a solid show and it's similarity to others has always felt a bit safe and comforting for me while the show is still very entertaining

Personal opinion: Black clover's manga did roughly the same thing with going all-in on the tropes so they can do an "early chapters of the battle-fantasy manga" speedrun. They need I think 5 chapters to get the primary cast introduced, have a clear sense of what the rivalry dynamic is, a goal for both main characters, a rough overview of the supporting characters, the structure our underdog is fighting against, how his fighting against that structure is different from everyone else's, a bit of forshadowing that Not All Is As It Seems, and drop our protag-kun off at the first Big Showpiece Battle. The anime fucks this up, of course, by bloating out the first few episodes and most people can't get over his yelling (which is at least not vocal in the manga). So. Yea, if you want to see how break-neck a manga can get, check out Black Clover('s manga)

I see a lot of mad people. "MHA is so misunderstood." "You missed the point." No, it's not. It's a shounen anime and it borrows from the tropes that the successful shows before it used. It's a formula and it works for longevity in shounen. I suppose for the older anime fans, seeing these tropes over and over can get tiring and make you jaded. There's nothing wrong that they pull inspiration from the shows before it but it's also not wrong to recognize that these concepts have been done before and lament for a little more originality.

As someone who is watching Naruto for the first time right now, this whole thesis checks out. I remember getting so weirdly pissed years ago when bnha first got animated because of all the Naruto comparisons because NO IT'S ITS OWN SHOW, STOP COMPARING EVERYTHING TO NARUTO, blah. I know how superfans always wanna act like their fave is the second coming of Christ, but the longer you watch shonen the more you see just how derivative ALL anime can be of others in its genre. Like, look at isekai as a whole, you know? But just because bnha isnt reinventing the wheel doesnt mean that it's bad or dull. Like, you're 100% right on how on point bnha's pacing is!! I know Naruto and many other shonen have filler to content with, but GOOD GOD. Watching Naruto is a struggle when I compare it with modern stuff. Spending over ten episodes on one fight alone because of all the talking flash backs, and just straight up DEAD SPACE should have been a fucking crime. There's so. much. dead. space. I can't praise bnha enough for doing away with that. Even with its meatiest and most plot-relevant fights, bnha never stretches a single fight more than like 3 episodes and I love that. You KNOW the Naruto version of like, Deku vs. Gentle Criminal would be AT LEAST a half a season. My brain melts just thinking about it.

Ryouta Murakami from Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014) and Izuku “Deku” Midoriya from My Hero Academia (2016-) are team players who uses their brains before their brawns, rarely going in with a plan and dedicate themselves to serve people and doing the right thing. But how relatable are these two are? For this list; I’m doing the “Top 10 Times Ryouta Murakami and Izuku Midoriya are Relatable”. For those of ya’ll who are fans of Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014) (Like Myself); then ya’ll should give “My Hero Academia” franchise (2016 -) a watch and for those of ya’ll who are fans of “My Hero Academia” franchise (2016 -); then ya’ll should give Brynhildr in the Darkness (2014) a watch too. For me personally; I enjoyed watching everything that have been happening in the ““My Hero Academia” franchise (2016 -) so far and understand why Ryouta and Izuku are both similar to each other. Rather ya’ll agree with this list or not; that up to you to decide. Alright then; Let’s move on to the list: Top 10 Times Ryouta Murakami and Izuku Midoriya are Relatable 1.Ryouta’s childhood past with Neko and Izuku’s childhood past with Bakugo 2.Ryouta accept to have faith on the “Witches” after they save him from The Police Squad and Izuku accept “One For All” 3.Ryouta decide it to help Neko after reading her letter on telling him not to help her and Izuku decide it to try and save Bakugo from The Sludge Villain 4.Ryouta & Kotori save Neko from Kikako and Izuku save Ochaco from the Zero-Point Robot of the Villain Bots 5.Ryouta standing up for the Witches against Hexenjagd and Izuku telling Shoto that his “Quirk” is his; not his father, Endeavor 6. Kotori smile when Ryouta said “Happy Birthday” to her and Eri smile when Izuku and Class 1-A did their musical performance in the School Festival 7.Ryouta have the ability to use “Photographic Memory” and Izuku have the ability to use “Shoot Style” 8.Ryouta being a kind caretaker to the “Witches” and Izuku showing his kindness to Bakugo 9.Ryouta save Hatsuna on a radio tower and Izuku save Kota from Muscular 10.Ryouta tell Kogorou about the “Witches” and Izuku tell Bakugo about “One For All”

I'm sorry but I can't stand these types of videos. If you dumb down every Shonen than of course they'll look the same. These videos do so much harm to people's online perception of the series(example: Deku still being called Green Naruto in 2021 is laughable, calling MHA squeaky clean X-Men and Sky High in 2021 is wild) Like if you honestly read the MHA manga and you still think this in than I don't know what to tell you at this point. We'll never be freed from these takes I fear. Edit: I will admit that the MHA anime is also to blame for why people have this perception of the series. The do a shit job with the tone of the series among other smaller things .

If you like the series that's fine, but stop acting like it broke new ground. I'm a Bleach fan, but I'm not gonna sit here and act like Bleach did anything new that wasn't done in animes/media that came way before it. That's the problem with fans like you, if someone doesn't hail the series then its an attack even though at the end of the day no one cares if you still like it.
