Okay guys... don't be mad but we definitely thought it was filler and we filmed up to episode 86 at this point. The character designs threw me off! And we also thought La Brava was still in school... Her appearance in the ending with the other kids made us think she was around their age or younger! My bad... we know now. -Sam

Don't worry. While the arc is canon, it definitely comes off as filler-y. The episodes from this arc are - as you probably know by now - also by far the weakest out of S4, and maybe amongst the weakest of the entire series, although they offer something. I don't care much for it to be honest. I will watch your reactions, but it's generally an arc I skip when rewatching. Really just waiting for it to end and the episodes that follow. As for the ending - you probably know that by now as well, but it's not just the kids you see there, you also see other adult characters when they were students. Edit: And more than really anything else, the reason this arc exists is solely because Jirou is the author's favorite. Content-wise, despite it adding something, you really wouldn't lose a lot if you took it out the series. So that's another reason why it feels so filler-like!

It's all good. This is one of my favourite arcs because it shows how close Deku became to becoming a villain, thre difference in him always being saved vs fighting off a villain on his own (that was crushing other heroes) and inspiring people to be better, which is what hero society is all about. Otherwise it'll be chaos

Something I only noticed watching the reaction: when Kaminari is having his daydream about the maid cafe, Jiro is the only girl he doesn’t include in the visions. Kinda goes to your point about while he does sometimes lean on the pervy side, he feels a different way about her

He's an anti-villain. Like an anti-hero fights bad guys, but uses methods similar to villains, and anti-villain commits crimes, but has morals and intentions closer to those of heroes. He's a criminal, but he's not actually evil and doesn't want to hurt anyone.

@@catwhowalksbyhimself that’s not exactly what an anti villain is though. It’s more like villains who have heroic goals/good intentions but still do BAD things. That’s why magneto and thanos are considered “anti-villains” even though they DEFINITELY hurt and kill a lot of people. Stain would also be an anti-villain. You’re right about Gentle being considered an anti villain but your definition is a bit off.

Deku up until has always “fought” against villains. But no brute force or special powers can heal the trauma Eri went through… that’s why the arc is underrated..

The best thing about MHA to me is that the fights are often times the catalyst to change for society or a particular character i.e. Shoto vs Deku, Endeavor vs high end, and the fight against stain.

To me, “filler” is those episodes where they cobble together clips from previous seasons. Filler can also be a side story that does not advance the narrative or develop the characters at all. The episode where the kids solve that fake jewelry store robbery while All Might pretends to be the dead villain is (fun) filler. The OVAs are fillers. This gentle criminal arc is not really filler. It’s more like easing off the accelerator for a while before ramping back up.

Filler is anything that's not canon. More specifically anything not in the manga (or "source material" as some anime are based on light novels). OVAs however, while "not canon" are also not necessarily "filler". As the name implies "Original Video Animation", they're just extra things created for fun and actually more often than not made based off of author notes or small shorts at the end of a volume. So realistically, they're actually canon a lot of times but just didn't have enough to create anything substantial. A lot of OVAs will mash up a few plots from these notes or shorts together to make the OVA be the standard length of an episode. This Gentle Criminal arc is 100% canon though, as it was in the manga.

Let me be clear about this. The Gentle Criminal Arc is extremely important and none of this is filler. The only filler episode was the one "special class" episode when the first movie came out. I know that some people think this arc is filler, but only a person that doesn't understand the series would say that.

Okay... Filler content is for a weekly release schedule anime that is close to catching up with the manga that is also a weekly release schedule manga. Boku No Hero isn't that sort of show, it airs annually and the series isn't near catching up.

Yeah, I guess this arc does sorta give off some slightly filler-ish vibes, but as was already addressed, it's canon. I guess it's more appropriate to think of the festival as more of a "cool-down" period after all the intensity of the Overhaul arc. And hey, Gentle is even one of my favorite villains in the series, for what it's worth. So let's not write off the next few episodes just for being a bit more light-hearted than usual! 😉

I will point out right now that La Brava is implied to have dwarfism and is much older than she seems, being in her 20s. Gentle just has naturally white hair and is in his low 30s. I am pointing it out now as it will make things way better later.

I can understand not liking the arc as it’s very different from everything previously, but I think it’s a very important arc in terms of character development for the important players at this moment of the story. I also love the interaction between characters that doesn’t just involve fighting, seeing these kids be kids is refreshing after always having them fighting in dangerous situations haha Personally I prefer the whole second half of this season to the first ❤

It also fits nicely in where MHA seems to be going with the whole one person shouldn't have to support all of society. This arc shows that different people with different talents are also able to help others, even if they aren't able to beat up the bad guy.

This arc is the only one I really like in S4 if I'm being honest. It does help that Jirou is a focus, but even disregarding that it's something the show needed and I kinda wish it was willing to do more often.

The point of this arc is to finish rescuing Eri, because as Deku said she hasn't been fully saved yet. So they added some more elements to not be a very simple and short arc

It's annoying sometimes watching these reaction channels when they don't figure out why rescuing somebody isn't just a physical thing, it's also mentally and emotional,after all, the victims have gone through something very traumatic. Yes the little girl was saved, physically but as we all know, her mental stability and even emotional stability is still in danger

This arc has SO MUCH importance regarding what heroes and villains are regarding this universe. You can call it the eye of the storm of sorts. Definitely a crucial moment in Deku's hero growth. This isn't Dragon Ball where the only thing that matters is how hard Goku can punch. You need space where other characters can catch up and shine/twinkle. That keeps them important and reliable players in the heroes vs villains game. Like Deku said, they saved Eri physically, but they haven't freed her heart. That was the point of Orca's lesson in the remedial hero test.

A "filler" a term I really hate, by the way, is an episode that has nothing to do with the main arc and is seen as just filling in the number of episodes. This is the start of an entirely new arc. An arc cannot by definition be a "filler." Plus, this arc is a direct sequel to the one before, dealing with Eri's trauma and emotional issues. Rescuing her doesn't magically make everything fine and it's nice that the manga and anime have an entire arc at least partially about that.

Tbh i hate this arc. I dont like Gentle and i especially dont like La brava. Their whole thing is weird and it feels like filler. Like they could be given ONE episode and that would be more than enough context for future potential episodes. This did not need to go on as long as it did. Worst arc in the whole series .

As a general rule that I don't believe has been broken, MHA filler is always episodic. They don't set it up in the prior episode nor does it last more than the 1 episode for the story. I want to say there is always 2 filler episode per season after season 1. The very first episode which has always been recap and then 1 random episode in the second half.

I consider this a canon filler arc. It was in the manga but it does have a distinct filler feel. I think they did it because school festival arcs are a very common trope and almost traditional to include in school based animes. And IMO this is the last good arc of MHA (only because it serves as an epilogue to the Chisaki arc). After deku obtains a certain something this series spirals down with unnecessary powercreep that hurt the narrative IMO.

@@toodleloos No, it isn't. It's not even a question. The katakana in the manga make it completely clear. The voice actor for Gentle has good enough English most of the time for it to not even be ambiguous. It's just a lazy mistake (one of many Horrible Subs made with this series back in the day and stubbornly refused to ever correct) that was pretty ridiculous even before they got to the point where her quirk was revealed.
