"First year was supposed to be the easy year and I found it so challenging." Honestly this is so real, I 100% relate to you. I had such a difficult time in my first year, my flatmates were horrible to me so I spent a lot of time in my room, I didn't make many friends and I didn't get a job so I literally stayed in even more. I felt so lethargic all the time, I'd stay up til late hours in the night and then miss all my lectures because I was too tired. I ate like crap and honestly I became quite depressed and wanted to go hone. I felt so awful seeing everyone else around me have so much fun while I was stuck inside. I didn't have the "uni experience" at all. To see you also had a similar tough experience breaks my heart because I can empathise. I'm going into second year too and I feel the same as you, about the fresh start. I really hope this year is better for you and you settle in well. All the best❤️

THANK YOU FOR BEING HONEST. I literally felt everything you felt. The amount of work in first year hit me like a TRUCK. The lecturers are no help and I had to basically "know" how to write an essay. I didn't go out much and I'm the same as you, I don't like forcing friendships. When I asked everyone what they thought of first year they seemed to enjoy it and I was like it was boring and stressful. I wish I watched this before going uni. Great video!

I go to Warwick and totally get you! Freshers and first year is so overhyped by people around you, social media, pressure from teachers- I felt so uneasy during the whole time, even up until the end of the first term. I hated the fakeness of 'friendships' at the start, as you said, everyone just seemed so desperate and forced. Luckily I feel like going into year two I have my friends and am finally settled, but that concept of it being so easy straight away is such a lie and so mentally draining.

2nd comment, I’m also the exact same with friends, I HATE making fake friends, everything from the small talk to the trust issues, I like to have genuine conversations with friends I made naturally rather than forcing them, and I’ve always been that way, I have no idea how to even go about purposely making friends, I’m so used to just letting it happen

I graduated from Economics at Exeter in 2012. Most of the time lectures were useless. They don't give a fuck whether you understand or not. English or British lecturers were good. Others were hard to understand, boring and, as you said, they assumed a lot. Especially teachers of Econometrics - they were useless. A lot of the teachers used to show some complicated formula and NOT explain the idea or intuition behind it at all. They think that its meaning should be obvious to you.
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
Kaysar777 yes!! It's so easy to feel lost for that reason because lecturers just assume you know everything!

I 100% agree with all of your points. I'm in first year and I hate it. I have no friends because I was so nervous the summer before first year and hated orientation week and I'm an introvert I also hate forced friendships and why do I have to make friends like literally within the first week? Fuck that entirely. I do like my professors but it is a big change going from your high school teachers knowing you to your professors not knowing you and not caring about you from the beginning. The feeling that everyone is enjoying uni but you are finding it very stressful is reflected in me too.

I had two freshers, the reason I quit my first degree (Imperial College) is that the lecturers dont give a shit. All they cared about was postgraduate research. Please, anyone that is out there applying for university delve into the internet and look at student satisfaction, contact time, read forums. Find out how accessible the lecturers are. I wasted a year and a lot of money at a supposedly fantastic uni, and now I go to uni of Birmingham and their teaching standards are amazing. A little research may save you a lot of money and stress.

I'm applying to law this year to start in 2018, and not to sound harsh but for real I feel like you just weren't that prepared for everything like it might've been your sixth form's lack of preparations because at my sixth form they truly warn us about everything we should expect. I feel like as long as people do some research about it they can be more prepared for whatever faces them. Obviously i can only know so much because I've never been to uni but videos like this really help and the more you try to research about both good and bad things about uni the more you'll enjoy it because expectations won't be that high. Thankk you for the video thoughh and good luck for next year

I graduated from Psychology at Exeter this year and absolutely loved watching this video! Literally the academic side was 100% me pretty much the whole way through my degree. Everyone acts and sounds like they have their shit together but I promise you most people feel exactly the same as you do. I kinda learnt to trust myself and just think I have got through GCSEs and A Levels by planning and doing my essays this way so I'm not going to compare myself to people who have written their essays in one day! I think that is a key thing.. DO NOT compare yourself to others just do what you do the way you do it! :) Also, I COMPLETELY agree with the fact you are just a number and lecturers don't give a shit about you. That does get slightly better as you get older, especially in third year because the class sizes are a lot smaller. In terms of improving your grade, I struggled with this too a LOT! I'd say don't be afraid to ask for help, you are paying £9,000 a year for this degree so use every resource you can! If you find asking lecturers doesn't help you, maybe go to the essay feedback workshops or find older students to ask for help because they are A LOT more willing to help having gone through the same experience as you! You sort of make your own help at Exeter so just go out try asking students lecturers look for help online whatever it takes until you feel like you are improving! Once you see improvement you will start to feel the motivation coming back to you! Overall, you've got to remember that Exeter is a really good uni so the course is going to be harder, but once you get through it it will be worth it to have that degree! I found practice made perfect with report and essay writing and especially stats haha I sucked at stats until third year, you'll find different lecturers liked different styles of writing (which REALLY wound me up) but after a while you will start to find it kinda comes naturally to you! Good luck with second year, I hope you absolutely smash it and that it is a lot better for you than first year! :) xxx PS: sorry for the essay hahaha!
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
+Maddy it's so helpful hearing from someone who's finished the course I'm doing!! I recently got accepted to Exeter psychology. I applied using US academic scores-SAT TOEFL AP GPA...(English is not my first language so...TOEFL). It is shown in Wikipedia that Exeter has an admission rate of 90%, what the hell?? Also how is Exeter’s quality in psychology just below Oxford??? It is ranked around 10th in many UK psychology ranking... I applied to Exeter because it seems really good, but after some digging I’m not so sure if I am overqualified and deserve to go to other Unis...

O.M.G. Thank you SO much for this video, honestly. My first year was so shit and hard, I felt like I'm the stupidest person in the whole uni because I just couldn't get good grades at all. I was very depressed and anxious, couldn't find a job and just stayed in my room 24/7, my flatmates were shit so I felt even worse. I was just sleeping and binge eating and drinking all the time, skipping lectures. I was so scared to go to lectures because I felt so stupid and lonely in there. To me, it looked like everyone around you knows what they're doing and I'm the only one that doesn't, and I was ashamed of myself. I knew I needed help, but I was just too embarrassed to ask for it. I tried to kill myself a few times throughout the year until I met my boyfriend. The first year was just horrible for me okay.

I made friends with my flatmates! There were a few people outside of my flat I was friendly with though, i met them through my course because they lived in the same accommodation as me & also i met people through volunteering :) I know it's so scary but don't worry because other people will be scared too! The best place to start is the people you live with, but you can also get to know people through joining societies & try to find people in your accommodation in the same course as you so you can walk to lectures together! Just be yourself and don't force anything and that way I think you're more likely to make genuine friendships :) Good luck lovely and if you have any other questions please ask 💞

Hey! I've just graduated from Exeter - I did English. I completely empathise with what you've said in this video. My third year was my favourite year at uni. Despite having loads of work to do and a dissertation to write, I felt a lot more confident when it came to asking for help. I'm starting Psychology at Exeter this September, really appreciated the video!! Was wondering if you have any advice/tips specifically about studying psychology or anything that surprised you about the course xx
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
Evie Leek thank you, good luck! 💕 it surprised me how soon into the year we had to write a practical report (it was for the research methods module). But you get a lot of assistance with it for the first one, then from there on you don't get much help so if you need help definitely email the lecturers! Also there are optional modules like animal behaviour and evolution, which a lot of people didn't enjoy so if you don't enjoy the first lecture I'd recommend switching it to another module from another course if there are any that interest you :) I wish I revised + made more effort to learn things as the year went on rather than leaving it all a month before exams...so I'd recommend going through lectures/notes every week or something! Also attend the bio peer mentoring sessions, they help you recap and understand the biological psychology lectures in term 2 cos many people struggle with biology :) if you have any other questions let me know 💖
@evielouwerse65017 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! This is really helpful will try take this on board :) Was also wondering how you found the statistics/research methods part of the course, I didn't do maths A level, so just wondering if you were in a similar situation? And if so if you felt you were at a disadvantage? Thanks again x
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
Evie Leek research methods was really easy, probably the easiest module of the year! If you've done psychology a level most of it's the same and if you haven't it's pretty basic concepts anyway! And I didn't do maths a level either and the January exam is definitely harder than the summer exam but it's not impossibly hard even if you're not good at maths cos I ended up doing pretty well in stats :) just make sure in term one you do the questions set for you every week so you learn as you go! The first exam is also worth more than the second exam & you HAVE to pass it or you'll have to retake to make sure to revise for the first exam! Xx

Finally got round to watching this amazing video. I'm glad you've enjoyed volunteering for Student Mind - that explains all the campaigns I saw you doing on campus! About everything else, I hope it will all be better next year for you. Also, I know this scheme that pairs you up with a student in the year above you who would have helped you settle down last year - you could sign up if you're in second year too if you still want some help (message me if you're interested). Final point: if you want to, I'd happily drag you along to VegSoc socials next year ;) xx

Penny! At The Disco thanks Penny! Oh okay I didn't know you could do that in second year I'll think about it :) ahaha I'd love to!! I'm definitely joining again 💕

I did all the a-levels you did and I'm also doing psychology at degree! However even though I got A*, A A, I'm still going to MMU as it's close to where I live & but I really regret not going to another, maybe better uni
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
Oh what a coincidence! Those are amazing grades! I'm not sure if it's too late, but you could do adjustment on UCAS because you got really good grades & probably higher than what was asked of you so you could transfer to another uni. But MMU is still good & it doesn't mean you can't do really well there :)
@RockInitJess7 жыл бұрын
Selina Ozay I already applied for adjustment but didn't end up choosing another university because I already had MMU but now I wish I could have tried for Durham or even uni of Manchester! MMU is still good but not as good as others in the league tables!

In personally I just wondering that how is the exeter uni reputaiom among local uk students and what is the difference perspectives compared with international reputation. Just I was told that exeter in the uk normally called by oxbridge reject uni, but on the globla scales is note really famous as much as regional prestigious. Plz give me obvious answer about it . Really thanks.

Omg this is literally the story of my time at Exeter. I was studying psychology in September 2015, was in James Owen Court (off campus), had a shit flat, a shit personal tutor who told me she never expected to see me cos the uni has other resources, the course was harder than I thought it would be, the lecturers were shit, and I also hated how "forced" all the friendships felt. Literally everyone seemed to make their friends for life within the first week :/ on top of that I was so homesick and I'm pretty sure I was suffering from depression at the time too. I didn't want to get out of bed most days, I couldn't sleep, I didn't want to eat. It was just awful. I ended up dropping out after Christmas, best decision of my life. I'm now going into my 2nd year at Cardiff uni and I'm studying English Lit; I'm so much happier now :) xx
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
i'm glad you could relate! Yes so many of the personal tutors just tell students they don't have time for them, it's shocking! I'm so sorry to hear that :( But it's good to hear you're having a good time in Cardiff, it was my second option!!x

Cardiff seems like a really nice uni, have never been but I've been on their website. Just from there it seems really supportive and like they care about their students, more so than others uni's

hey mate, i have a question about exeter and i feel like you'd be a good, impartial person to answer it lol. how "diverse" would you say exeter is? I'm considering it, so I went there on an open day and everyone was overwhelmingly white and middle class, including the student ambassadors, and I felt like I was getting quite a few 'omg a brown girl irl' stares. i don't think that they'd be racist, but you know when white people aren't properly socialised to behave around people of other ethnic backgrounds, so just end up chatting absolute shit? I was just kinda worried because i live in a fairly multi ethnic big city and have been to schools where i've been the only brown face and schools where there's a good mix of different ethnicities, and I've just felt infinitely more comfortable in the latter. Would be really grateful if you/ anyone else who's been to/ studies at exeter could get back to me :)))
@SelinaOzay6 жыл бұрын
unfortunately your first impressions on the open day are correct, it's quite low BME :( I totally know what you mean, and totally understand why you would be uncomfortable! But yeah, the percentage of BME students are low, which sucks. I can't comment on how it would feel to be a BME student at Exeter though - but I'd REALLY recommend you check out the channel 'student life vlogs francesca' because she's interviewed BME students at Exeter about their experience!! i hope this helped xx

That was a really interesting video, my brothers at uni and said so many students got caught out thinking the first year was supposed to be a breeze and loads failed or got no where near the marks they thought (he's an older student so didn't really have any dramas, he was there to work off the go lol)

Is it worth it to do a psychology course at uni? I'm supposed to be starting a psych course this year but I'm still not sure if I want to go ahead with it
@SelinaOzay5 жыл бұрын
It depends on a couple of things. First, are you doing it to become a psychologist? Because if you are, a lot of people are unaware that you need to do a doctorate, most likely a masters and work experience before hand!! So you should be aware of that firstly. Secondly, are you genuinely interested in psychology? In my opinion, it’s definitely a very interesting course to do and although you don’t become qualified as anything, you can go into soo many industries after a psychology degree!
@minidwarfdude92305 жыл бұрын
Selina Ozay Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking of possibly studying a clinical psychology course after my undergraduate degree as that's my preferred side of psychology and the career I'd like from it would likely be something to do with counselling/psychotherapy. Right now I'm too unsure about my future and my exams are literally just around the corner!

What was your accommodation, I've just been offered a standard room in Unite Northernhay, looks so bad I think I might just not go to Exeter at all, what do you think i should do
@os55437 жыл бұрын
I was put in the worst rated accommodation at Exeter and it wasn't bad at all. I've been to a lot of Unite flats though because that's where a load of my friends stay and all the ones I've seen look absolutely fine. I wouldn't worry
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
it was point exe! and I agree with Olivia, I haven't actually been into any of the unite flats but from the pictures they look decent! It should be fine, even though i didn't have the nicest halls it didn't hinder my experience much at all, it's more about the people you live with!
@joncund80217 жыл бұрын
Olivia Scott thanks for the advice but I don't think it's worth it, to stay in that dump and being miserable for a year, costing £5500 that's as much as an en suit room in a nice accommodation else where, one of the main reason of going to uni is it's supposed to be a lot of fun, I think Exeter is out of order they shouldn't of offered me a place if they don't have any accommodation to offer, now I've got very few options left, I might as well either try and change uni now or go straight into work, I can't see any other option
@joncund80217 жыл бұрын
Selina Ozay some do but not my block, absolute nightmare accommodation, I've been looking at some rooms in some student houses with 2nd and 3rd years, do you think that would be a better Idea, I don't know whether I'd feel isolated
@SelinaOzay7 жыл бұрын
You could go to unite accommodation anyway and later switch to somewhere else, because some people end up dropping out! For example one of the girls in my flat later moved to Lafrowda because the had spaces there. I also know quite a few people did live in student houses straight away & I'm not sure what their experience was like but if you're worried about being isolated you could find other first year students to live with here www.exeterguild.org/advice/02-housing/housemate-finder/
