Reliable brands such as Seiko, Citizen, Orient & Tissot could easily blow away these brands with a little tweaking in their styling. The Tissot Everytime is superior in every way to DW and MVMT from the Swiss ETA quartz movement to the sapphire crystal. Every dollar you spend on it is justified and you wouldn’t be embarrassed to wear it because it is a brand with true heritage.

Teddy Baldassarre - Tissot has the biggest potential since it is the most prestigious and I believe people really fancy “Swiss”. The Everytime is the same price if not cheaper than DW or MVMT. The uninformed masses of newbie watch lovers don’t know what they’re missing. Affordable quartz watches certainly fill an important need but gosh, I really wish people wouldn’t be gypped by these garbage brands. $200 for a cheap $10 quartz movement? 😫 Tissot should hire you as their style consultant and influencer. I’m very confident they will experience a surge in sales and I will certainly buy your designs 😁

I agree with everything you said, but I suspect the movement (and probably the whole watch) doesn't even cost them $10. Unless maybe you include shipping, logistics, marketing, advertising, commissions paid to "influencers", etc... I heard somewhere that the watches (unbranded) are available on Ali Baba for pennies on the dollar. I am NOT recommending people buy these, but if you are, pay what it's worth.

The problem is that the way that DW and MVMT get so big is by advertising. Almost everyone knows those brands and they become trendy to wear. At my school, I haven't seen a single person not wear a fashion brand. Tissot would have to spend so much extra money on advertising and because MVMT watches look 'cool' it wouldn't go that far. I mean you can say it has an ETA and sapphire but no one will know what you mean.
@mvteyv6993
@mvteyv6993 6 жыл бұрын
Tissot for many is either considered an expensive brand or not known of. DW and MVMT sell to teenagers and young adults and kids currently wear a watch to be trendy. One student in my school was wearing a DW and didn't even know how to read analog and the more people I ask the more I find fewer people can actually read analog. So to them it doesn't matter the quality, they can't even use it to tell time, it is purely for looks.

First and most important rule to buy a watch: YOU need to like it. Does not matter other people's opinion so if you prefer a Vincero over a Citizen or a Seiko, be proud of your choice, it's what matters. Brand prestige and heritage are great but the items that make you happy are more important. And fashion brands are a great starting point. My first watch was a Hugo Boss quartz Chronograph that my wife gave me over two years ago, now I have 12 watches. And I started with a overpriced fashion watch that I wore with pride and this is the only thing it matters.

Totally agree. Most of the mainstream "real" watch brands are just embarrassingly bad at marketing, particularly digital marketing. There is such a huge wasted opportunity for the longstanding watch brands to actually interact with the watch community and give the people what they want, but most of them don't seem to care, or are so clueless and outdated that they don't even know they're losing sales.

I doubt that real watch brands like Rolex, AP, Seiko, Patek, etc are losing any real profit because of the "fashion brands", let's face it, Patek probably gets much much more over the course of a year than let's say DW. One single Patek or Grand Seiko costs like 70+ DWs. One single AP royal Oak is about 16.000€ so DW has to sell 80 pieces of 200€ for the price of one AP and believe me, AP sells more than just one single Oak/year. But, do real brands lose profit on their entry level pieces like Seiko 5s, Orient Bambinos, Seiko SKX, entry level Hamiltons, etc? Hell yeah. They simply have to advertise their "afordable" lines that are much better than ANY "fashion" crap. Hell yea, a single Seiko 5 that costs about 100€ can easily last you a lifetime and you can get 2 for the price of a single DW that will barely last you a few years but Seiko simply doesnt advertise their Seiko 5 line for whatever reason. Shame.

I love watches. I own expensive Citizen and Seiko watches. I will be buying my first Rolex soon and I am excited about that!! I also own 2 Vincero watches. The vincero watches are not my go to watches but I do wear them sometimes. I think they are decent entry level watches and look nice. I originally bought vincero because I kind of fell in love with their story. I really like the look of the of their watches as well as the sayings on the back. " Veni Vidi Vici " and of course " Live Your Legacy " the Marble built into the watch is a cool factor uniqueness. They are not the best quality watches but I think they will be around for a long time. I have had ZERO problems with my Vincero watches and will not sell them any time soon. People hating on them need to realize these are not your $5,000+ Omega or $10,000+ Rolex watches. Vincero watches are affordable $150+ watches that in my opinion give that expensive look. Not that my opinion matters to the people of the internet but I give my endorsement for vincero. -Cheers

1:22 this DW is the best design from them i've ever seen. I like clean dress watches and own a few of them, especially Frédérique Constant but in all honesty, this one is kinda nice. I'm sure the movement is dirt cheap and the finishing sucks but at least they tried to do better than the classic DW. The heat blued hand imitation is interesting, the date windows at 6 is nice for the symmetry, the case looks better than the Sheffield's, the crown is also a lot better than the nipple they used for the Sheffield. I don't really like gold imitation cases and I like the cases more round and for this elegant watch, this case might be too "harsh" if you see what I mean. The hand a quite well proportionned. The dial is maybe not enough as there is no texture, the color is more like paper and A railway minute track could be appreciated. The logo is horrible and they should just keep the Daniel Wellington name. Stick an NH35 and for 240 bucks you got a good value watch.

I think these brands put an important topic on the table: The minimalist/fashion/urban/design oriented or similar styles that sometimes are not found on more stablished or positioned traditionl brands. In my case, I struggle a lot trying to find a good balance between these type of styles, materials and reliable movement. Saying this, I think what some micro companies are doing, e.g.Marloe Watches or Rosling is quite interesting on trying to taget that balance I am refering to.

The first watch I bought was a MN (Mark Naimer). I saw it a lot on Instagram and knew nothing about watches. I wanted to wear it to a wedding, unfortunately, soon after it arrived, one of the hour indices fell off. I complained, sent it back in, they shipped it back with the hour stick visibly glued back on. I stuck it in a drawer and forgot all about watches for two years. Eventually, I found an old little Seiko in the house I currently live in, left behind by the previous tenants. At first I thought that it was "dead" because it had no strap, and it was not ticking. One day I decided to take another look at it and (to my astonishment) it started running when I shook it around. Seems obvious now, but at the time I had no idea what an automatic was. That little Seiko is what got me started on my horological journey. My old fashion watch, last winter I decided to wear it to work as a joke and it quickly fell apart. The "PU leather" peeled off the strap, the gold plating rusted off, and within a week, it died. Too much water must have seeped into the 10 meter water resistant case.

I own an original grain. I got it as someone at the time with a casual interest in watches as objects with combined form and function and wanted something aesthetically different. It appeals to my taste and fits my style, I’ve seen nothing like it even amongst other ‘wood watch’ brands, I’ve owned it for about 3 years with no quality/construction issues and the quartz movement, while not nearly as exciting as as a manual or automatic, is perfectly good and reliable. I also love mechanical watches and own a couple, but I wear my original grain just as often because some days that’s just what I feel like. It gets endless compliments and was boxed better than some heritage brands, with a beautiful brochure on their goal to suit. They are actually proud, and it shows. Also have a bulova 96g10 that I love and my wife has the matching. My wife just purchased the vincero altitude for me as a surprise. Really like the styling and its something more on the sport/casual side that I haven't had before. It's got enough quality to it to not feel too cheap and she picked it up for like 80ish bucks. So, I'm going to see how it goes. Overall, I would rather have a quality piece that keeps really excellent time and will last a long while. Some of the watches I have are nearing or just about at the 20 year mark. I have never really been into the "flash in the pan" fashion type watches. I honestly think some of the higher quality brands like Citizen, Seiko, and Bulova could potentially snag a bigger market share if they worked harder on fresh and trendy design but what would be the compromise to that? Maybe quality would suffer as they wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand and then they would become what they possibly don't want to become.

I was glad to hear you’ve actually worn these watches. But here’s generally my problem with MVMT and similar brand hate 5 reasons why I hate the “5 reasons I hate MVMT watches videos” 1) Everyone says they have cheap generic movements (which they probably do) but no one ever cracks one open to look 2) Everyone says you can get the same one for $1 from China but never actually has either one to compare the two 3) A Seiko 5 is usually suggested as an alternative without any mention that it will be 20-30 seconds off per day whereas even a cheap generic quartz movement will keep better time 4) Marketing is always brought up, and it’s true, paid reviews are never good, but how about some of the watch geeks buy a MVMT watch and give it an honest review? (And perhaps you have, I haven’t looked through your entire playlist but as a whole the reviews on these seem to be lacking) 5) They aren’t marketing towards you. Just like Rolex isn’t marketing towards me. They know their target audience and hit it hard. But this too always seems to be left out. Now I don’t own a MVMT watch, so I have no horse in the race, but it seems the bashing of MVMT could be better substantiated by having the product in hand and worn it some.

Also i'd like to add, about the design on the dial which is matters most than movement, horology or anything else. As the name implies, fashion watches are dedicated more to fashion. While I agree that these watches have a place and that most people don't care about watches but just want a good design, this still doesn't make their prices okay to me. A DW is probably worth 3 to 4 dollars, yet the MSRP is more than $100. I don't care if people aren't watch geeks, but everyone should know whether they are getting ripped off or not.

JamesG true, but you will still be getting a great watch from a company that's not lying to you. Obviously there's a price premium for every luxury item, but that's what DW isn't: luxury. Also crazy prices on Rolex are often determined by other things than Rolex themselves (if we're talking pre-owned), but DW is just setting their prices at $100 while knowing that they produced the watch for $2 and that you could get the same watch except unbranded on Alibaba for 10 bucks.

My first ever watch is a Fossil Grant Chronograph FS5061 which I bought around three years ago. At the time, I didn't know much about watches to be honest. I just thought it looked nice on the wrist. But because of that watch, I'm now more intrigued in learning about other well established watches. My second watch afterwards is a Timex T2N946 that I bought two years ago and last year I bought my first ever automatic which is the Orient Bambino AC08002F. Yes, fashion watches are not the best in quality but it is a jumping platform to most noobs like me to get into horology.

I respect you more now, Ted. Glad you reconsidered your initial opinion, on these Fashion Watch Brands. Like you, I started my Watch Collection with these Watches. But as got more into the Horological aspect of the hobby, I weaned myself off of them. I still have a Vincero in my collection & I intend to keep it ( it LOOKS good & it WORKS very well ). Would I have bought it, the second time around, knowing what I know now as a more seasoned Watch Collector?? probably NOT. But it doesn’t mean that they don’t have their place, in the grand scheme of things. Besides, they DO give the Big Brands a run for their money, where Marketing & Promotions are concerned, hence their popularity. The True Watch Brands need to step up their game.

They have given me appreciation for anti snobbery, philosophy of intended function, and putting my money towards different brands. For that, I am grateful. Honestly I think in terms of STYLE, my Kairos is the style I like the most. I wanted to find a watch around $1,000 with that type of style. The only thing I found that matched so closely was a Tag Carrera Calibre 5 and I didn't want to spend $1,500. I "settled" for a Longines Conquest. Couldn't be happier.

Good points you raise here Teddy. One thing Vincero and DW have in common is they’re achingly beautiful to look at. Yeah, look closer and their quality shortcomings are apparent.Therefore you’re absolutely correct to say that manufacturers of good watches have failed their market in not matching their style excellence. I’d buy a Tissot or an Oris in a flash if they looked like any of the Vincero‘s you show here. Frederique Constant comes close to a good compromise in matching quality, style and price so I believe they’re somewhat underrated. What do you think?

Hi Teddy, I think that many people today who buy a watch, especially their first one, simply go on Amazon or to their local Wal-Mart or Kohls or other department store and buy the best looking watch in their price range, irrespective of brand, unless they have a family member or friend who steers them toward a particular brand. Fashion watch companies take advantage of this and make their watches as physically attractive as possible to appeal to the novice who doesn't know any better. True Swiss made watches are probably going to cost more than what the first-time buyer is going to want to pay anyway, in many instances. I do agree with you that the established watch companies absolutely need to do better in advertising to the young generation but also make watches that catch their eye, especially as we become more of a throw away society and their attention is more and more caught by new technology, not the good old fashioned wrist watch.

You are definitely right about the horological echo chamber we place ourselves in. Before dismissing any of the companies mentioned, one has to remember that Swatch started out as the same kind of fashion accessory marketing company, and quite literally went on to take over the watch world. Swatch figured out how to sell the MTv generation the same way their modern counterparts have used social media to capture the current target demographic. It will be interesting to see if any of these companies will have the staying power to become the next Swatch or Ralph Lauren, or end up on the ash heap with the likes of Jordache, OP, and Members Only.

I just bought a Vincero watch and have yet to receive it in the mail. I just turned 24 and never really looked into watches. Saw an ad on instagram and fell in love with it and bought it. The thing is, people my age can't drop $400, $2000 or $10,000 on a watch. We're busy paying student loans and worrying how we're gonna eat. But if you can get a stylish watch for $150, it seems way more achievable if you save up a little and then you can get it. At the end of the day, you can think of Vincero and other watches like that watch is gonna be their first car. Hardly anyone has a great first car but hopefully they can graduate to better things moving forward. I know nothing about watches, but the past 2 days I've been learning a lot about them. And I know I'm 1 of thousands like that and it's getting a whole new generation into watches.

I do believe all the fashion watches that you're speaking of have a place in the watch world, it's a stepping stone for many to get into collecting or getting to know about watches. We have to remember that not all of us can afford luxury end watches off the get go and a lot of us don't know anything about horology till we start getting interested in the topic , so we kind of go with the aesthetic look which these watches offer, but in the end as many watch bloggers have stated, if you like it and you want it then it's up to you to purchase it and rock it well. Competition is good for business and that's why they are here, maybe this causes the luxury end watches 2 adjust their advertising or start making entry-level watches as well.

First of all, I am really starting to like your channel more and more Teddy. Your content is always straight to the point, very elaborate, unbiased (where objectivity is required) and pleasant to watch/listen to. Second of all, I agree with you that those brands have a place in the watch world, but it is not to last. Let me explain: the success of the mentioned brands to me only has to do with the terrible marketing of the 'real' watch brands. So I think they will only last as long as the big boys don't improve their respective marketing strategies. Unfortunately, I doubt that this will happen in the near future, but if it did, the actual watch companies would blew the kickstarter brands away due to far better quality and heritage. The only way to survive for the fashion brands in my eyes would be to sell actual quality products instead of just a brand name on some cheap piece of metal, but as long as the traditional brands don't get their marketing sh*t together, they can just continue doing what they do. Of course, I am not a watch expert nor do I know the industry very well, but from my observations the traditional watch companies are very lazy, almost snobby, kind of disconnected from the newer generations and on top of that too slow in what they do and decide. More often than not it is "next year: business as usual" instead of coming up with something innovative and creative to aim at the market of soon-to-be wealthy young people. Yeah, rant stops here, have a great day and thanks for reading if you got to this point :D (might be smart to set a TL;DR at the start of my comments haha)

Teddy, I believe most people buying fashion watches aren't well informed about the alternatives. Without forcing your opinions on them in doing so. For example: MVMT's marketing is claiming to be affordable luxury. This is the exact same thing we hate about the forcefulness in watch snobbery. Their marketing is so aggressive, a lot of young people are blinded by it. Now, if someone, who understands the alternatives, who understands there isn't much value in the movement and build quality, still chooses to buy a fashion brand, then I fully agree with their choice and even support them. This is the same message you're giving us. These watches are for some people. But because of the aggressive marketing strategy, most people don't know any better, so they buy the watch and actually convince theirselves they've made a good deal. This scenario is hard for me to support and is the main reason we dislike these brands. Claiming to be something they're not, giving conflicting and hazy information about their history, often fabricating it completely. However, I see this time and time again, even in you: these aggressive strategies are getting people to buy watches. And for a fraction of these, which you and I are a part of, it opened the gates to learning and yearning for more, educating ourselves, through the communities and the vast information online. In this way, fashion brands are actually contributing to horology awareness.

Hi! As others told, for example casio (edifice) or citizen are better options. From cheap watches I tried S Oliver - it was very comfortable, precise but the ion painted band was not high quality. Esprit - I loved them, had not matter, only weak thing the luminous hands/marks (weak light) and the leather band. Timberland - I also loved it, heavy, durable type was with epson movement.Without problem. Fossil - one of my favourite for some ocassion.The luminous hands and marks are beautiful, the watch glass embossed, leather strap is good too.Bought very cheap at outlet price. A category up: Festina - looks beautiful, the movements are correct, I hold it in my collection. Swiss Military Hanowa - swiss ronda movement, the housing and both watch is very durable, the sapphire glass is perfect. Casio (edifice - Toro Rosso series) : very good quality, comfortable, durable watches. I wear a lot but they looks brand new. Citizen (I love ecodrives) - my best option at "low-mid" price, the best quality from cheap battery powered to ecodrives. I bought some in outlet at half or lower price.Very good materials and make quality, perfect movements, very good bands.Best price to value ratio.

As an accessory and not a form of appreciation of horology, they kind of make sense, some of them do look trendy. But, the problem with most of them, I think, is the way they were marketed. Some of them were marketed as an "affordable luxury", when they were not. That kind of marketing deceive people into thinking that these watches are luxurious, when they are actually buying a grossly overpriced watch. I think people should know about this fact first, so they can set their expectation. If they already knew about the fact, yet they still prefer the trendy look and image of fashion watches, more power to them, maybe they will learn about traditional watch brand in the future if they were interested in learning about watches. Here in Spain in the local department store's watch section by far the biggest space is allocated to the fashion brands of Lotus, Festina, Jaguar and Viceroy. They have so many different styles, tend to be attention getting looks, have mediocre but adequate quality and prices that are between 100-160 Euros. The fashion watch section is about 15 times bigger than space allocated for the Japanese watches: Seiko, Citizen, Orient and Casio. For the masses the philosophy is that they can get a slick looking watch, that should be reasonably reliable and won't break the bank. It is not for me...but I can understand where they are coming from.

I don't have a high income and I suspect my style will change within the next few years so many of the watchs are things I really like (e.g. I like the textures of original grain watches and find the aesthetic of Skagen watches appeals to who I am now). I realise they are flawed and shallow in other ways but they suit my needs and are within the realms of possibility for me Edit: that said if your response is 'but this is so much better' I'd be very happy to hear that and look forward to being persuaded😂

How's original grain? They look cool in the wood... Are they cheaply built also?

I dont know about MVMT or DW but I can say that Vincero is actually great as a first watch If you just wanna see If you like watches or not... I already saw you in the comment saying that they even have sort of the best quality compared to the other fashion Brands and I gotta say im happy with my Vincero Cronograph that i got for 120$ with discount Codes. My next watch was a Maurice Lacroix for 800$ which Im really happy with, but originally I would have never bought it If I didnt own a vincero beforehand.

I’ve been thinking of acquiring a Vincero but while I was seeing these videos I’m getting mixed feelings about it. Some say it’s good, some say it’s bad, some say it’s just ok, so I’m not entirely sure of what to think about it. Personally I like the designs they offer but I’m not spending money of a watch if it results in being garbage at the end so be honest with me, if you have or had a Vincero, is it worth it? Please keep in mind that I’m considering Vincero because of the prices

I love my Vincero watch, it's the chrono s with blue face, I got the stainless steel strap for everyday use and the brown leather one for smarter occasions.

I just got the watch bug two months ago. I bought a DW, fell in love with Triwa. Then I bought a few Tissot Automatics, Orient and yes a Movado 1881 ( I couldn’t resist the look). Today, my first and probably only Omega was delivered. The anchor of the collection. I need to stop buying now! I’ve learned a lot and thanks for your videos.

A De Ville Prestige blue face, 424.13.40.20.03.001. I figured I’m going to stop buying for quite awhile so I wanted one serious watch that has the chronometer designation. Not a fan of diver watches. So a couple thousand vs. many thousands! Lol! I thought photography was expensive!

Completely agree with you. I became interested in watches and horology because of a fashion brand as well, so they certainly serve some purpose
