OHMYGOD HEY!
Last weekend I finally saw Disney's FROZEN the Musical in the West End for the first time (in forever) starring Samantha Barks, Sarah O'Connor, Craig Gallivan, Oliver Ormson, Obioma Ugoala and more!
Though I was hugely impressed by the scale, spectacle and performances, I left feeling slightly disappointed by highly acclaimed show and am bringing you an extra long review video today to explain why that was.
Check it out and don't forget to let me know which other shows you'd like me to review on my channel down in the comments section!

“Nothing stagey happens on the Old Testament” The prince of Egypt, children of Eden, and Joseph and the Amazing technicolor dream coat not to mention like 20 or more operas and oratorios are side eyeing this

I've seen this twice now and loved it, although I agree there are a few parts that drag a little and others where it feels rushed. Hygge is a 'WTF' moment for sure (a big lipped alligator moment if anyone gets that reference) but it's still plenty of fun. I was disappointed that they got rid of the first time in forever reprise at first, but actually I think 'I Can't Lose You' is great and adds a lot more depth to the sister's relationship. Elsa is given a bit more to do but ultimately it's Anna's story and both Stephanie McKeon and Sarah O'Connor are fantastic in the role.

I like I Can't Lose You but it makes Anna's heart getting struck by Elsa a lot less dramatic by not having the FTIF reprise while it happens. I would have liked it if the First Time in Forever reprise was sung after the new song, or maybe just the ending where Elsa goes up for the countermelody

I quite liked hygge, it was very silly, bit of a cheap laugh but sometimes thats what people want. Nice little message and captured the Danish word well. It was also the only part of the show that felt Scandinavian, nice little nod back to the origins of the story. Agreed about fixer upper, I was expecting that song to be better.

I found lots of other things in the show to be scandinavian, especially costuming (lots of the girls had traditional norwegian dresses aka bunad) and set design (like the church when she becomes queen is inspired by a norwegian church)

I saw this Saturday night! Great review, although I would have knocked a star (or two) off your rating. I wrote the dance music for the original Broadway Beauty And The Beast, and I feel like Alan Menken did a better job of expanding those movie songs into a fuller Broadway score. Too much of the Frozen score seemed uninspired, and the Lopezes never seemed to find a unifying style for the show. Hygge is indeed batshit crazy, but the little girl sitting behind me found it hilarious, so I'll give it a pass. Question: how many times is a Disney show going to rewrite Hakuna Matata? You were correct in calling this a Nordic Lion King. The vocal arranger for Frozen is Stephen Oremus, who wrote the "Lion King-like" vocal arrangements in The Book of Mormon, and although he did an excellent job here, the choral moments sound like they're straining to create a Finnish mystique. You make an excellent point about the show treading water so that "Let It Go" can be the 1st act curtain. A lot of shows have built in structure problems like this. One of the difficulties with musical adaptations of movies is that movies generally have 3 acts, but musicals have 2. But the show isn't FOR me. The audience was filled with children dressed in princess outfits, and they had a great time. I also grew misty at the opening announcement. Probably my main problem with the show was attending it as a single man, which, as I was surrounded by children, made me feel a bit creepy.

I listened to the OBCR of BATB for the first time when I was five, and even then I was amazed at the incredible arrangements. Thank you for your contribution. No "reinvention" will come close to the magnificent lush sound of the original orchestration. I haven´t seen the show live, but I dream of producing a revival that brings it back. It should have never been changed.

Having followed Samantha and her career since she started on “I’d Do Anything” I was beyond excited to see her as Elsa. And from the videos I’ve watched, her voice 🤌🏻…stunningly gorgeous. And having seen the show recently for my birthday a couple of months ago, Caroline Bowman voice had me in tears. She’s AMAZING. And when she and Berklea Going (Frozen Tour) sang “I Can’t Lose You”…my feels! 😭

I've seen the show twice and for some reason I liked it a lot better the second time. It could have been because I had a kid with me the second time. It was her first Broadway show and seeing it with her practically jumping out of her seat next to me was truly magical. And yes, when they said that bit before the show started, welcoming those who've never been to a professional show before, I did tear up. I thought of how important theater has been in my life and how this could be the start of it in theirs.

Having seen the show on Broadway and in London, I can indeed confirm they have added lines by the mother in the prologue to include revelations that were made in Frozen 2. Also Olaf now calls out Samantha later in the show, a gag also taken from frozen 2. I do love the show, and think they have vastly improved it from the Broadway version, but yeh I completely agree with what you say about Hygge, should have been cut.

They felt so „not-dreamy“, if that somehow makes sense. Just like lets project some ice glitter magic on the walls and floors and the kids will be happy. I had hoped for more, especially after seeing what productions like cursed child could archieve with partially very oldschool and nontechnical effects that still didnt fail to impress me.

Fun, comprehensive and captivating review as always! When you got to the list of disappointments/issues, I thought "this sounds more like a 3-star show at best," but your ending summary explained the overall positive and even magical experience. I haven't seen the show, so just have two comments: 1) I swear I thought you were saying "Hugo" and was wondering "who TF is Hugo?! New character? And... why is he naked?" Only in the comments did I see "Hygge" and feel like a dope. And 2) Is that t-shirt an homage to the Hamilton poster/logo?! Because that's fantastic if so. Anyway thanks for your humor and charm--I just love this channel.

I was amused by how impressed you were by the dress reveal, because, while it was done smoothly in the performance I saw, up in the gods the little hole appearing in the stage was extremely obvious and it pissed me off they hadn't checked you couldn't see it from that view. Other than that (and whatever happened in Hygge) it was very fun and I think your assessment is very fair Oh and also! In the production I saw Anna had a costume error during the early scene where she's getting changed and the actress dealt with it so smoothly and in character that for a moment I thought it was intentional which was most impressive

Love this review. Ive seen it in NY and london and i adored ‘colder by the minute’ in both - it’s so clever and i love listening to this song haha. On broadway ‘What Do You Know About Love?’ was the biggest surprise and it was brilliant (on a wicked syle ropey hanging bridge rather than cliff-looking thing they have in london) but in london they really cut down the song which was a bit disappointing. But overall i absolutely loved it and would love to see it with sam barks and steph mckeon as i saw the understudies (who were fab!)

I see it most weeks through the Monday tickets (as well as The Lion King) - I never thought about how the first act is dragged out so Let It Go can be the end of act showstopper. I suppose they did it just well enough that some will notice and some won't. I love the whole show and even Hygge grew on me after seeing it a couple of times, and is now one of my favourite parts!

I honestly loved it, thought Oliver Ormson as Hans was actually the strongest on the night - Samantha Barks was incredibly but clearly struggling a little voice wise on the night I was in (it happens, she was still fab) and think he gets overlooked in a lot in the discussion. I do have to say Hygge's long number was just, no - cut it, it serves no one and d r a g s. However overall the staging of the show was lovely and it only really needs tweaking in my opinion but someone put Hygee out his misery and get the second half as strong as the first!

I love the movie of Frozen so much, and saw the show both on Broadway as well as in London, and I largely agree with you! The timing is way off in so much of this, and some of the staging is a little odd. Especially the Hans reveal scene, it’s so quick it gave me whiplash. And having seen it on Broadway, they’ve changed it quite a lot for the West End, including all of the references to Frozen II. I preferred it on Broadway honestly, I’m not keen on the changes. As a Scandinavian I like Hygge! It’s basically chock full of references to Scandinavian culture, including the nudeness I’m sorry to say, and to me I like it just because it’s a reminder of where it’s supposed to be set and the Andersen tale that inspired it. It’s just a comedy take on our culture, which I understand might feel weird if you’re unfamiliar with it.

So so agree with everything you’ve mentioned. I saw the show in Adelaide , Australia last Thursday and while I really enjoyed it and had an amazing time- the show itself wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been. And the amount of scenes that were either way too long or rushed was insane! Also felt like Anna and Kristoffs romance storyline came out of nowhere too, whilst in the movie it showed their budding love. Also I can’t lose you, good song but it doesn’t work, getting rid of the reprise was a horrible mistake. And legit , the Hans reveal was so rushed and Anna not having her song anymore after that made it feel very empty. I wish it could’ve taken notes from Anastasia, which imo is the best animated movie to musical translation.

I saw Frozen on Broadway in January 2019. I have been a huge fan of Frozen since the movie was released and I’m incredibly emotionally attached to it so I kind of just cried through almost the whole thing (except hygge) when I saw it. I forced my best friend to come with me and she’s not attached to Frozen but she does have a theatre degree and she was so glad she went because the production was still incredible. When the show closed on Broadway during the pandemic the social media team sent me a thank you gift for the support which was the sweetest thing. I have not seen the updated version featuring “I Can’t Lose You,” which was written for Frozen 2 so I don’t think it fits well into the first Frozen. I miss “True Love,” I can’t imagine why they’d cut it. I have a lot of critiques of the show but I still love it and especially the music. Elsa really gets to be the star of the show with three separate solos, which I don’t mind, but I still wanted more from Hans.

When I'd seen videos of the West End production, I was kind of confused about why they were using American accents -- it's not like it's set in the US or anything -- but what you said about kids expecting it to sound like the movie makes sense. (That thought also just reminded me of several Les Mis productions I've seen in the US where Gavroche and the Thenardiers (but not Eponine) have Cockney accents, while everyone else sounds American. Very curious about the thought process of the directors who made that choice.)

I agree with a lot of what you said. I think the timing is pretty weird, and I think “In Summer” could move to the spot right after “Hygge” to match the film. Also, I definitely agree that “Hygge” should be cut down a ton to allow the room to reinstate “True Love”, which was my favorite song from the new material. I love “Dangerous to Dream”, but “Monster” feels a bit rushed. I really love “I Can’t Lose You”, because I feel it adds emotional depth that the reprise didn’t contain, but I wholeheartedly agree that Elsa’s sudden coldness following the number is a bit off-putting and bizarre. At the risk of running the show a bit long, I think to add the dramatic buildup and musically freeze Anna they should have had both numbers: “I Can’t Lose You” followed by the chorus only of the reprise. It would give a minute for Elsa and Anna to get really deep with each other but also give Elsa some time to freak out before absentmindedly shooting Anna. I think they’d need a fuller introduction to it and a stronger post song scene. I really like the craziness of “Colder By the Minute”, but perhaps you’re right on the random medium changing that brings it to being. I love all the references to “Frozen II”, like the Northuldra line from Iduna, the Samantha thing from Olaf, the four elements in “Fixer Upper”, and Anna’s updated hairstyle. One thing that I thought was odd, as an American, is that they have the characters use American accents. It seemed like an unusual extra thing to think about that doesn’t change the story at all. Is that normal?

When you talked about Hygge and the nakedness I got really confused. I went to see Frozen in Hamburg last month and Hygge is done in a totally different way. There is one reference to nudity but everyone is wearing winter gear during the whole song. Maybe the German producers wanted the song to stay a bit more child-appropriate. Nice to see that there are some differences in the international versions.

I’ve taken both my niece and nephew to Frozen separately but I’ve actually been more times without them than I have with a child. I’ve seen Steph Mckeon as Anna every time I’ve been and she owns that role and is worth the ticket money alone just to see her. Also to note, anybody that goes that doesn’t want to see how the dress reveal is done, maybe don’t sit high up in the theatre because you can see exactly what happens despite the fog 😂

Hello. I'm coming to London in December. I do not have tons and tons of money. I'm wondering what you recommend to see? I have seen Mamma mia, We will rock you, Avenue Q, Footlose, The liong King (but I missed the opening act) and The book of mormon. I'm a disney fan and love musicals. You said something Disney day tickets scme? How dose that work? How Can I use it? Thank you and hope you replay.

Very fair review, I'd give it a three myself. Definitely odd production, especially as the template was all there in the film, but I suppose they wanted to put their own stamp on it all. The result is very jumbled, definitely odd pacing, beginning is very different, no young Christoph Ice cutting song, Sven is totally silent the whole way, no moose sounds, nothing, just felt like a vacant space of a character. Christoph felt kind of absent as a character, definitely cut down. I felt a kind of "Huh?" vibe from the audience around me much of the way through. If you just want to see the songs on stage then yes that's great, if you want a cohesive story and developed characters then no. And Hygge was just weird, yes weird.

I like it a lot, but I have always been disappointed that Frozen was chosen over Moana, which I think would be an amazing musical. Still, I could put my bias aside and really enjoy the show. It’s a true spectacle to see, but the original music isn’t quite as good as Beauty And The Beast or The Lion King. And just like you, I got a lot of joy seeing Sven come on stage. Still holding out hope for a Moana or Princess And The Frog musical.

I wish Mary poppin’s would do a full U.K. tour. I saw beauty and the beast in March it was amazing 5 star only lion king tops it. also saw bednobs and broomsticks but while I really enjoyed the special effects personally I was let down by the new ending I can understand some people liking it but it didn’t work for me at all.

lol you saying it's warm. not me being Australian & being in London the last few days freezing my ass off wishing I brought more jumpers & seeing everyone in normal Jean jackets or shirts. Then again if it's hot in my area that means it's usually 30°-40° to me anything below 21° is cold. I saw Frozen in Sydney end of January 2021 & I liked it but not my fave Disney musical I've seen tbh.

MickeyJo, Mrs. Doubtfire the Musical just closed on Broadway. It's due to play for a month at the Manchester Opera House this September (and possibly the Westend after that). It is absolutely worth making the trip. While plot wise, the musical version is true to the movie, it is so much more than the cinematic version. Put it on your calendar...you'll thank me later.

Saw it on Broadway in 2019 and in my opinion, Hygge is the only good thing in the show 😅 As a scandinavian it was hillarious to see the references to our cultures and I really enjoyed that it made the world of Arendelle seem part of it. I know and usually don't mind when musicals need to change things from the source material but I don't think Frozen translated well on stage, unfortunately
