In my view, FIRE isn't about cutting out all of the things in life that bring you joy just to retire early. It's more about "Marie Kondo-ing" your financial choices, and cutting out unnecessary spending that doesn't actually bring you joy. I still travel, I still go to the movies, I still eat out from time to time, and still go out with friends. But I also save aggressively by spending less in the areas where I care less, or where implementing a DIY solution wouldn't take much extra work. That said, you're definitely right about it requiring a higher income. When I was broke in my 20s, this wasn't even close to being an option.

I am a minimalist, but not for any political reason. It's purely psychological for me. My mom kept a very dirty house with tons of knick-knacks and clutter, and for 10 years, I lived in extreme poverty (I literally lived in an abandoned house in the woods with tons of other people's discarded stuff). Now that my life is better and I have more control of my choices, I have found that lots of stuff gives me insane anxiety. It's better for me to have less stuff around me. I would never shame someone else for their choices.

You hit on an aspect of this that a lot of people don't realize. Minimalism is very much a reaction to our boomer and older parents' houses full of crap (and even not-crap, as anyone who has had to throw out their grandmother's rarely used good dishes can tell you.) I recently had to clear out my mother's house after she died, and she had saved everything. Just, everything, as did her mother. And in the end, it's mostly stuff you have to pay someone to haul away. I joke that when I'm an old lady I'll own nothing but a spoon and a cup, but yeah, if I could become a moderate minimalist, that would be great.

I like the idea of minimalism when it comes to being more intentional and selective with my purchases and what I decide to keep around my living environment. I like to believe minimalism can be flexible and look different person to person and applied to the individual. I guess more of a Kon Marie keeping things that only spark joy. Example some people might see someones large collection of a item to not be "minimalist" in terms of the aesthetic appearance but it may still fall under the idea of minimalism more as a way of living rather than aesthetic.

I get what you are saying about the shame-y culture of the minimalist/low-waste/etc. lifestyle movements and the trendy asethetics of it all, but I somewhat disagree that the benefit of people participating in those lifestyles and the "movements" themselves are really only for individual gain (to the ones who can afford it). It's kind of like saying that your one vote does not actually have an effect on the outcome of an election. That is true, but when you combine it with many it can have great effect and send a message on a way bigger scale than just that one person's life. Even if it is a trend, coming with all the pitfalls of a trend, it shows the wider world and those 100 companies that people are generally interested in more sustainable lifestyles and products.
@pallasitematrix1614
@pallasitematrix1614 5 жыл бұрын
I think that it's a lot more than the companies being interested in sustainable lifestyles and products- they are actively profiting off of unethical business practices, to the point where unless it becomes unsustainable for them, as a business, to continue these practices they won't stop. Sure, companies might be hurt a little bit by not getting your business. Or the business of the minimalist community. But that loss is so far offset by the number of people who cannot afford to become a member of the minimalist movement that it doesn't matter. Historically, business practices don't change unless the company stands to take substantial loss- the way that we got organizations like OSHA and the FDA came from government intervention caused by guided and specific media coverage of the horrors that were happening at the time. It wasn't people *not* doing something, it was people making concentrated efforts by organizing campaigns. And the minimalist movement isn't a campaign. I think that the minimalist movement is a good start, and it's really nice on a personal level- but it's not going to affect change on a national or global level unless there's a shift in our approach.

You do you ofc but companies will Only generally act more enviromentally friendly if they will benefit from it and it will feel more practical and better economically in the long run. @saammmy7 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. When those individual choices become a movement it can have a huge impact. Not just on companies but also on the government. 15 years ago there was only one party in my country that put an emphasis on environmental issues but nowadays most parties have jumped on the bandwagon because their voters showed it's something they care about. I feel like Chelsea never addresses this impact when discussing personal vs. government responsibility in these matters.

Love love love. This is the nuanced conversation about minimalism as a lifestyle I was wanting, not the rant Erin presented (which treated minimalism as a panacea for life's problems which I have never heard any minimalist say). Though I will note that I have never lumped minimalism in with zero waste ideology. To me, minimalism is just living more intentionally and is something everyone can do and everyone can see benefits of regardless of income bracket (just like exercise; you don't need to go to a gym and everyone can benefit from elevating their heart rate). But when it comes to zero waste, I'm 100% in agreement. Zero waste, imo, requires a much larger paradigm shift than minimalism does. Ultimately, though, I view these things as lifestyle choices, just like you. I think FIRE is cool for people that can make it work, but I'd rather live my life intentionally now, not continually saving up to enjoy things when I'm older (insert John Lennon quote). Though, if done right, I believe both are possible (maybe not as wealthy as one would be on FIRE, but still). Great vid Chelsea!

I agree completely! Plus I think theres a lot of different types of minimalism - aesthetic minimalism, financial minimalism, consumer minimalism and environmental minimalism (which overlaps a lot with zero waste). Personally, I am a financial and consumer minimalist - meaning I do not buy an item unless it is replacing something else, or there have been more than 3 occasions in the last 3 months where I wished I had that item. I'm not an extremist by any means, but I have moved 5 times in the last 5 years, and became a minimalist as a result of not wanting to bring as much stuff with me and to reduce the stress of moving. I'm moving again across the country in a week (hopefully for the last time!!) and all of my stuff fits neatly into a 10 foot trailer. I also regularly donate items that I do not use, because I've found that the hidden cost (renting a bigger apartment, paying for storage, etc) of having a lot of stuff is more than I'm willing to pay. Plus, I work from home half the week, and I've found having a less cluttered environment makes me more productive and reduces my stress. I mainly use my minimalism to reduce my debts as much as possible. I own one credit card, I no longer take on more than one loan at a time (for example, I am not buying a house until I finish paying off my student loans, which I make double the monthly payment on currently so I can avoid interest in the long term. My car is paid off and has been for 2 years, so I am focusing on getting my loans done before buying a house). I bargain shop for groceries, sticking to delicious but simple meals so that my food bill is less than $40 a week. I never buy current gen smartphones- I always buy at least 1 or 2 generations behind what is newest because it's cheaper while still being updated and getting supported, and then I use it until the phone completely dies (my last one lasted nearly 5 years). I don't have cable, just netflix and hulu (bundled with Spotify because I dont own CDs). I am an artist, and art supplies are bulky and expensive, so I ditched the dozens of oil paints I never use much and switched to a Wacom tablet with a photoshop subscription I managed to get for free through my work. The only vice I have with "stuff" is books. I have switched to ebooks mostly, but I'm very sentimental with my favorite books and have a hard time letting them go - but I am working on it!

It's a real shame those two lifestyles seem to merge into one and give a inaccurate picture of both (not the best choice of words, I know, but I can't for the love of money find the right expression).
@TechnicallyLenard

But minimalism is about our impact on the environment as well. This planet's resources are actually limited. By adopting a mindset which does not drive us to want each new toy that comes out, and 10 of each clothing item in the store, we start living more realistically, and stop buying crap to buy crap to sit around. Crap just to sit around is both wasteful financially, as well as wasteful in terms of resources.

@@TechnicallyLenard Not to me it isn't. Minimalism is about recognising that a lot of "things" actually don't enhance our life in any meaningful way and by getting rid of all those things actually freeing ourselves.. it is driven from within. Come on people、minimalism is not about buying the expensive option. It is all about questioning your needs and focusing on what is essential for you - what you need. Please inform yourself adequately about what you're commenting on. It is about not buying the spare pair of jeans you accidentaly bought and never wore、for example. It is not that difficult to see that essentialism is just a form of scepticism towards our perception of "consuming".

Yeah there seems to be this conflation if minimalism with low waste and sustainable living. Yes, many people identify as both but minimalism is only having what you need, living within your means and rejecting much consumer behaviour that encourages us to buy more and more stuff for the sake of buying more and more stuff. Sustainable living is difficult if you're not wealthy - a plastic toothbrush is cheaper than bamboo and that's fine if it's what you can afford. Buying cheap t-shirts is fine when a $100 organic cotton is unaffordable. It's buying 10 t-shirts when you don't need any that minimalists struggle with.

Stavros Ctz, I agree with you. Chelsea is trying to frame minimalism in terms of a social construct when in fact it's a personal choice in the way one chooses to live and to be a consumer. To tell people that yeah, minimalism is fine, but we have to focus on the "macro level" betrays her political bias. About 18 months ago, I encouraged Millenials to watch TFD's videos for advice on investing, career choices, etc. A few of them did watch her videos but told me they were put off by her "values" (I was told by my coworkers that she is stuck up, talks down to people, and acts holier than thou because "she married some French guy and lives in New York.") I hope Chelsea tones down the rhetoric in the future.

Buying better quality does not mean spending on high cost items. Some of the most expensive products are not robust, lack functions, paying for designer style and exotic materials. In most consumer products there is often a model that out performs the others in the same price range and products costing far more. Providing not only better functional use but better quality build. The 80:20 rule certainly applies. You can get 80% to your perfect product for 20% of the cost. The few percentage improvement comes in at a very rapid increase in cost. If you can review the products you can determine how cost to perfection is worth the cost when we need so much just to meet accommodation, basic food and utilities. It can be difficult to work out how a product will stand up to use and what it is like to live with unless you get it and then it is too late. Some reviewers not only look at features but tell you what it has been in use after a month, 3 months and even a year. The amount of effort to review these articles and KZbin videos is extensive. The research can often save money by not getting the wrong product for your needs and usage.

PureRomance is a perfect example of an innocent fronting MLM. They had a conference at my job once right around the time that John Oliver put out his MLM bit and their marketing is extremely predatory and misleading. "A woman owned company with woman only employees selling products for women". Very interesting video today, and I think you were so thoughtful in your responses. I’m not a minimalist, but I do practice intentional living. I buy less stuff than I used to, but that doesn’t automatically mean I buy nicer, more expensive items either. I just reduced what I take in. Minimalism and intentional living are lifestyle choices, and you don’t need to be in a particular “class” to practice them if you’re thoughtful about how to approach them. With that in mind, I actually feel like personal life choices aren’t emphasized enough. You’re not in control of everything, and I agree with you on systematic macro-level problems, but personal choices are a big part of your financial health. I work in a notoriously underpaid industry. My colleagues and I are very underpaid, and that’s a system that needs to be fixed, but I also stopped living paycheck to paycheck two years ago because I started making better choices. It’s definitely a balancing act of the two that I think gets lost on millennials jaded by debt. Thanks for sharing!

I cannot imagine the stress that comes with medical expenses, I enjoy free doctors visits, free hospital (not elective procedures), free or reduced dental, free eye exams, age pension benefits - all basic needs of simply being a human being. Just mind boggling what many Americans (& other countries) do not have available to access when needed. While I do the best I can, I am working on recognizing that the mental load of trying to achieve unrealistic standards around consumption is extremely taxing on my mental health and not something I have the energy for 24/7/365. As you said, much of the responsibility is on companies who are ruining the earth on a daily basis and not on me for buying a vegetable wrapped in plastic once in a while.

I want to thank you a thousand times over for emphasizing that a lot of minimalism seems to be JUST about individual consumer choices, and is often actually a very expensive lifestyle. I actually think FIRE is viable for slightly more people in high cost of living/high salary areas (with the caveat that it's still only an option for the upper middle class or richer). If you're a software engineer living in Silicon Valley, making 140k a year, it's not that hard to save 50k+ a year (especially if you don't have kids). Then, at forty, you have enough money to fund a comfortable lifestyle somewhere cheap for the rest of your life. On the other hand, if you're living somewhere cheap making 80k a year, you can probably afford a fancier lifestyle in the short term, but you can't save 50k a year and still live comfortably.
@naimahaviland8920
@naimahaviland8920 5 жыл бұрын
For the 80k folks, you may still be able to get to FIRE if you stepping stone it. Factors have to come together. If you're used to living inexpensively to begin with and live in an inexpensive city you can save more. If you own an inexpensive home already and build equity in it, that can be a leg-up in financing the next phase of the process. Working from home would enable you to find a nicer and inexpensive home anywhere in the country where such homes are available and move there. It's planning + luck. And patience, because this may take decades. And define what "early" means, too. It can be any age under 65.

You’re the first person who has highlighted how poverty affects minimalism. I’m disabled so I need a ton of mobility stuff and I’m married in a tiny subsidized apartment of 450 sq feet. I’m as minimalist as I can be. I’m unable to buy bulk or sustainable because I have nowhere to store things and I have to use a wheelchair, which requires extra parts stored too. Plus meds and tons of government paperwork and not always access to a printer or computer repairs. It’s very hard. But I live as sustainably as my husband and I can 👍🏼

Food for thought for some on the minimalism subject and this is by what I've learned of it from "The Minimalists" guys podcast. For me it's a financial thing. I don't NEED that book. If I want a physical I can borrow it from the library and save money. I don't NEED to go thousands into debt for a brand name outfit when I can go to the clearance rack online at Eddie Bauer and buy quality jeans for 10-20$ because it's "out of fashion" but they hold up for 4-7 years each. Do I NEED that brand new video game when it comes out? Or can I wait and buy it used or borrow it from a friend? Yes reducing clutter is helpful for my mental health but paying off my debt by making the minimum purchases needed is actually far more helpful because I'm not stressed about making that next credit card payment. That's what it means for me. It isn't the visuals as much as it is the mental health.

This is by no means an attack, but from what I have understood from your view on minimalism as a concept, somewhere along the way you have fused it together with the separate movement of zero waste/ low impact lifestyles... The way I see things is: Minimalism is about living with only the things you need and want to live with, not throwing out items for the sake of it, but because you truly have no purpose for it. Whereas, zero waste/ low impact might go hand in hand with this, by the fact minimalists may want to own higher quality/ more sustainable products ("out with the old in with the new" comes to mind) it is by no means a reason to be put off by either lifestyle choices. One can be low impact and still not be a minimalist, or be a minimalist and not be low impact. They aren't so intertwined as you appear to be telling us. :)

Right, it's as if minimalism is a more personal thing while zero waste is for the environment. Like when something isn't useful for you anymore as a minimalist you may throw it out immediately but a zero waste person may think about recycling it or reusing it first.

The FIRE movement is quite big here in Sweden, a country with one of the biggest social safety nets in the world. It is not about not having enough money for retirement, or cutting costs (although some do). School is free too. Sounds great? We are slaves under the government, basically. The FIRE movement here is about not having to worry about money (because even though we have a big safety net and basic healthcare is pretty much free, you can still end up on the streets) and not letting your job rule your life. The FIRE movement is about stress relief, getting to spend time with your family and doing what you love while not having to worry about money. Because life is short.

I'm curious about how you are "slaves" under the government and how the safety net works.
@evelinaas
@evelinaas 5 жыл бұрын
@@Nepthu In short: the whole system is based on the idea that you should not be dependant on your family, you should be dependant on the government. For example, if you decide you want to be a stay at home parent, this is looked down upon, because if you don’t have a ’normal job’ and contribute to the socitey (eg tax money) you are seen as lazy and selfish. Collectivism before individualism. Equality of outcome, instead of equality of opportunity.
@evelinaas
@evelinaas 5 жыл бұрын
@@Nepthu I would also like to add in terms of retirement, there will not be enough money for the younger generation so millennials are recommened to start saving on their on. HOWEVER, savings are also punished by the government in the form of high tax rate. Instead you should work until you physically can't. There is really no winning here.

LOVE the FIRE movement....obviously. 😅 Documenting my journey here on YT. “Maximizing individual choices.” Interesting. I feel the exact opposite of Chelsea here. Taking focus off the individual equates to a loss of freedom of choice, in my humble opinion. If I could opt out of social security and choose my own investments to prepare for my own retirement, I would. And I’m no six figure earner here. As a matter of fact, I’m working through $90k worth of debt right now... but I’ll get there.🔥🔥🔥🔥 I think of it like putting the air mask on yourself before helping others on the plane. I can’t even fathom how much more I’ll be able to do in my community once I’m FI, and not drowning in debt anymore.

Unpaid interns and student debt. Thank goodness this is seldom found in Switzerland. Medical insurance is compulsory here. Debt is greatly frowned upon. We can most surely pay a CHF 400 medical bill. Also social help for pensioners is readily available.

ummm, every single UN internship in Switzerland is unpaid. Also your immigration laws are terrible. You can do better.
@user-sq1gk3fr4i
@user-sq1gk3fr4i 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeaninewillig9910 As you said UN internships are unpaid. But in the larger corporate companies not. In fact they are often well paid. As you know we are a rich country and salaries run very high indeed. But that is if one speaks excellent English to C1/2 level, plus good French and German. We do not expect one to learn Swiss German. Regarding our immigration laws. Yes they are very strict. We are the only Direct Democracy country in the world. We vote on issues often. So it is not only what our government wants. Switzerland is a small country so we do not want many foreigners pouring into it. Unless they are say Docturate University level. It takes 10 years to gain citizenship, then there are language tests to pass, passports can also cost up to 3 months salaries. Then the Swiss in your community where you are living must vote to want you here - if the do not like you (Say for example you are from Eastern Europe or... and they feel you are not fully integrated) then no Swiss passport. Yes it is hard, but it is our land and we are luckily not in the EU. That is how the Swiss run their country. Hope this helps you. Have a great evening.

This is probably my favourite video of yours! Beautifully reflected my own thoughts on minimalism/FIRE. I feel the same way about the tiny house movement. A great lifestyle choice for some, but definitely NOT a scaleable solution. Requires lots of compromise, and does nothing to address the macroeconomic issues that brought it on to begin with.
