When you rebuild, consider concrete slab for roof. It will most likely require concrete columns to support it. You can also use more & better steel trusses. Highly don't recommend using cheap corrugated sheet metal as roofing (for obvious reasons). The aluminum ceiling joists you used to hang your gypsum board ceiling is okay. Repairing the damaged ceiling areas shouldn't be too bad. Main thing is to build your walls and roof as solid as they can be. In event of another typhoon, boarding up your windows using plywood sheets from the outside is also a good idea. - Architect from Hawaii, USA.

@@Kevin-vh9dl oh my gosh- ok I'm zip on this one. But come on, trying to save a roof in a catagorey 5 Super Typhoon with wind gusts up to 300 m.p.h and trying to save a roof that was gently placed on a homestead with a fishing net trying to be tied in one specific location. The odds are probably against the roof saving guy.

U r correct sir. In bicol(southern part of luzon in Philippines), we always experience typhoon.. sometimes supertyphoons.. we always cover our windows with plywood. We make our homes as solid and sturdy as possible.

Earthbag building method is most prevalent for living in an environment threatened by tornadoes, typhoon and earthquake. Plus it's cheaper. Earthbag or rammed earth even the base tire homes are all great methods Lord have mercy. Scriptures says don't build your house on a sandy land...though a parable. It's an example of all the ways it can be vulnerable to destruction without a strong foundation. So Guy's let your foundation by anchored in Christ..for the devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. The Rock of Ages still stands!

I noticed at 14:58 that the truss was not properly designed. Wooden truss with the top chord and bottom chord dimensions of 1 1/2"x3" was not enough to withstand the wind forces. If it was steel truss the roof could have had survived. I suggest when planning to build your dream home contact first a civil engineer or a structural engineer.

I totally agreed with you, I really can't imagine how can someone just build the roof without the proper designed. It must follow the building code and not build according to our wish. She should use wooden rafters with 2 x 6 and not using the C aluminium frame as it cannot withstand the typhoon in Philippines . She should watch more on building code on youtune before repairing her home again.

You have to look at the positives: Everyone is ok. Half of the roof remains after a category 4 typhoon. Yes, it may appear as a total loss, but it is not. Think about priorities. 1 Repair the roof first because it prevents more damage. 2. remove all of the gypsum walls that were wet. You have to prevent mold growth. 3. with the gypsum removed, the roof can be strap secured to the foundation with the goal of having the roof ready for a category 5. 4. Once the interior is dry, replace the gypsum walls and ceilings. All wet gypsum has to be removed and replaced(floor level probably up about a foot. If it is dry and remained dry, then leave it in place. Long term(1 year), add a small hollow block structure to the property with a roof tied in with steel trusses. Then you will have a disaster shelter for if and when this happens again. This will get better, this is just the first test.

As a construction and demolition company owner here in USA with 30+ years of experience, it is sad to see people lose their house. I must say, these houses are poorly designed and built. The roof of your house is not to safety standard and would not pass a safety inspection even for a shed (building designed for storage only) let alone as a habitant for people. I understand most want to build houses for the least amount of money spent, BUT when your roof is 100% destroyed, how much money did you save? Is saving money to build cheap really worth putting your life in danger? I hope everyone in your family is safe, I also hope you hire a competent contractor to rebuild your home properly.

unfortunately a lot of houses are built fairly poorly in the province (I've seen it first hand) because no one can afford 'proper' building. at the end of the day for most of these people would rather put money towards food and necessities... it's the sad reality but they have to make choices like that and until we're in their shoes, we can't really judge them for making decisions like that. so devasting

I had literally just watched your new home build video, and then to see this one. You have a really nice home. One thing I did notice, is your roof was not anchored properly to the building. This I have noticed in my wife's home also, down near GenSan. Strong walls but very poor roofing standards you have there. We in Australia know severe weather and Typhoons also. I'm happy you were all safe though.

These people don't know how to build. Where she is needs stone walls and concert ceilings with no lift point. Put a tin roof on and it won't matter how you anchor it down when a typhon strikes it will rip it off when living on top of a hill. They have not learnt on the new build. That roof will come off on the next typhon.

i hope you were able to rebuild your house, but pls. use more durable materials, the most important part of the house are the foundations and the roofing, put more budget on those parts you will thank yourself later. our country is situated were multiple storms pass by yearly, so always build your house storm proof. watching this video is so heart breaking, but also looking at the materials used is really impossible for it to withstand the storm. the GI roofing is very thin, and trusses are made of light materials. but still atleast you and your family are still safe.

The great thing is everyone survived this calamity. However, you need to remove everything that is wet from your home: otherwise, black mold will set in very soon. Also, when you rebuild, please use hurricane straps (they are cheap to install) to lash the roof to the framing of your home. That should be a requirement of every home built in the Phils. Good luck to your and yours.

Everybody is safe, that’s what matters.. Clean up, help your neighbors clean up and rebuild and this time better structurally sound to withstand a typhoon. The roof seemed like the weak spot of the home but the rest of the home was fine, that flimsy metal roof doesn’t cut it, you get a little bit of wind underneath and that’s it.. God bless you!

The wind was able to take off the roof because it extended beyond the house wall and it was light enough. The ceiling slabs fell because the screws or glues were loose by the wind. These vulnerabilities should be noted when building houses prone to typhoons or hurricanes.

Did you even watch this house get built? It was a complete disaster of corner cutting and cheaping out. You could see light coming through portions of the roof after completion. I bet the ceiling slabs had been getting wet for awhile and even more so during the typhoon. Many people tried to give her advice about not being so cheap when building it and were ignored. She then went out and bought a brand new car and probably a few thousand American in furnishings. Go watch the build videos before giving advice on what the causes were. I think you'll be blown away.
