I finally found the perfect place to build the ultimate car guy compound. Tons of car parts, tools, and a motorcycle were left behind. So today we're going to sort through everything, throw a ton of stuff away, and start cleaning things up. A new house, a new shop, and a place to build cars better than ever before... but the house has some strange secrets of it's own.

Don't feel bad about the piano. We advertised 4 weeks, when my pop passed away. It had been recently reconditioned. Schools, no. Local charities, no. Churches, no. No replies on the advertising. While my sister was heartbroken, not quite enough to take the damned piano! We emptied the house and waited. Painted and waited. Redid some floor coverings and waited. Found a realtor we both liked and waited. The piano was the last thing to go into the dumpster before they came to haul it away. The last charity we contacted, had four of them. For free. For two years!

Pianos are impossible to sell. They take up a lot of space, they're difficult to move, and usually have to be tuned afterward. I knew a piano mover who also stored them for people. About 30% were abandoned by the owners. He had 100+ grand pianos in his warehouse.

my current house was a bit like that. i think that anything built after 1960 was built to a price point, the more you were willing to spend, the better the quality of work you got. now, with the cookie cutter companies out there i would be skeptical of buying a new house unless i was directly involved! 😀😀👍👍

All residential houses are built to a price point unless you custom build and that's why I custom built my house. 2×6 exterior walls and instead of typical headers over the garage door it was all redwood. Plus the garage was insulated as well in case I ever decided to convert the garage to living space and build another garage.

Stipe out the piano guts and make a Bar or a head rest for a bed. Have a TV pop out of it. Are putting and sound deadening in the new alls to make room more quiet? Leave the ceiling smooth.

what are your plans for the spot between the kitchen and the dining room? The ceiling is going create an effect. I’m curious if you have thought about lowering the ceiling down to the height of the joists. Another option, I’ve seen this done before, maybe putting joists in the attic that pull up the roof planks; allowing you to completely take out everything inside. This would give you a solid ceiling all the way through.

I had a Upright Piano in my Duplex when I bought it and also had problems getting rid of it. I finally called several Churches. One finally wanted it and came to pick it up for free! Glad to get rid of it. 😊

Those pianos are easy. It’s the baby grands and the grands that are hard to move. If it sounds good and is in tune don’t throw it out, a lot of them don’t sound good and have a thin crappy sound. The school should take it if it works or give it away on fb market place

Are you concerned about sound deadening? What about central vac? You talked about removing the popcorn on the ceiling and then putting more on? A flat ceiling is always perferred.

Looking good! I like the plan. Crazy how much harder and longer things take doing it yourself. Even simple things like painting become an annoyingly big project vs doing it with a 2-3 man crew.

That piano may be worth something and/or historically significant. It looks very similar to a family heirloom that dates back to true ivory keys and holds some value. Or it could be generic and worthless; tough to tell on a video and im no expert. Lots of good suggestions though

What direction do the attic joists run? Since that door way is in the middle of the house, I would check in the attic to make sure it's not part of a central beam where two sections overlap.

The Air Force has a tradition of burning pianos. Maybe someone from McConnel will come and take it off your hands. If not, you could burn it yourself....just stand well clear so when the strings start popping, you don't hurt yourself.

Some of those old pianos have a huge brass plate that the strings are terminated on, probably half the weight and worth money as scrap.

Me and some friends once loaded up a piano in the bed of an old Dodge truck. One guy sat in the back and played songs on it while we drove through town. It was hilarious. Nobody wants the hassle of a real piano anymore.

I will tell you the future of the piano. I know this from personal experience. IF you are able, get it outside. Yes, moving something that big, and that heavy can cause damage. SIGNIFICANT damage. Chance are, you are going to need a few sledgehammers, to break up the chassis, some major league wire cutters to cut piano wire, and, a sawzall for the cabinet (It may work on the chassis too. Once you got it busted up, it becomes much easier to move. (newsflash of the day) ps- this is definately going to be an Eric, Gabe, and Jake invide kinda project....

A lot of houses during that time we're built cheap. Maybe one outlet per wall per room. In some places fewer. No overhead lights. It was a dark and dingy time. Very low capacity electric Service panels

In Germany we had one outlet per room. Not per wall. This was normal. Not because someone was cheap, but because it was just not necessary. No one had that much appliances/devices back than. Not much more than a radio and a reading lamp.

I guess nobody was looking ahead. When I stated before most houses had, it was that way because most places mandated that many power outlets in the building code. The reasoning was, even if people didn't have enough items to fill the outlets, it was to avoid people deciding to run extension cords across rooms in order to get power where it was not. This would likely cause shorts and potentially fires

Dude.. many of the old pianos are well o ver 100 years old and full of top quality salvage parts such as old grown mahogany cabinets, birch sound boards, and then there's ofoten real ebony keys (black keys), real ivory white keys, and tons of brass and high quality wire. Find the name and serial, and use google to look up the age.. many of these old landfill destined pianos will provide years of project supplies, most of it iyou just can't get anywhere else. Often, the wood can no longer be harvested and is worth a small fortune due to its fine growth rings and rarity not to mention its been seasoning for >100years. You should be able to break one down to salvageable parts in 2-3 hours.
