I feel like I’m underpaid but I’m new at my job and it’s conflicting for me. Also having some major disagreements with the GM of the company and his view/ treatment of employees and certain managers is kind of making me think HR isn’t for me anymore. I know loyalty is to the company but I hate that helping the employees isn’t a top priority. I feel like why can’t I do both? But every time I do something that is perfectly normal or maybe even a part of employment law, the GM is unhappy about it. I simply told someone he was eligible for FMLA because his wife is about to have their baby. The GM told me “don’t advertise or push for them to take it.” Have an employee who is listed as part time under 29 hours. I noticed that she has consistently been working 30+ hours each week (I do attendance/ points and also payroll so always aware of these things.) I contacted the shift supervisor to clarify if she was still PT or what. He said he would ask if she can keep working 30+. If she works 30+ she’s eligible for benefits and per the company handbook, she’s eligible to accrue vacation time. So I went to the GM to see how he’d like vacation prorated for her. He told me “no. She will either be 40 hours or we cut her hours.” Like why? According to her supervisor on the floor, she is a top worker.

I will tell you and do have a video coming up about me leaving TWO organizations because of this. I have worked with teams who certainly put the employees first as the business structure revolved around culture. Southwest Airlines is my favorite example of this because they are all about taking care of their employees. Also it is NOT okay that the GM told you not to "advertise" that's falling very close to the realms of discrimination especially if this is written in your policy/handbook for employee benefits so that's unacceptable. This environment just sounds very dysfunctional and toxic. I went through it with two companies like I said earlier, and the most recent one I walked away from is the EXACT same but add cursing and unprofessionalism to the mix. As much as I wanted to be an ally and help my fellow teammates, I still have an obligation to my mental health and well being.

Oooh I'd love to hear your opinion on this as an accountant! Do you think payroll belongs in accounting or HR?? ;) One of my best friends recently quit bc she was HR professional but they asked her to take on payroll & it just wasn't the right work fit for her anymore. In one of the previous companies I worked at, payroll was a part of HR, HOWEVER as an accountant I've also been responsible for payroll.
@alexandria9870
@alexandria9870 3 жыл бұрын
So far My experience is Payroll and HR being separate but in constant collaboration. I personally do think that payroll should stay under accounting, our payroll team pulls revenue reports, end of the year, bonus structure etc. And some of them are accountants. I would definitely love to learn payroll side of things though. Payroll is to me also it's own entity within accounting. 🤔 I'm going to ask my coworkers too and get their feedback 😂

Hello! Thank you for sharing this, I live in Texas and have been on a job search for about a month and I know here in this state every job posting has required a degree and coordinator roles are at 55k and generalist roles are at 70k. I know I'm many many other places this is not the case but very interesting I've Networked with other HR professionals who were grandfathered in and they do not have degrees. It's an evolving career path for sure, and the burn out definitely depends on the company so I can definitely attest to the exhaustion!

Wow so sorry to hear this and that I never have a response. Apply to both Administrative and Coordinator roles! Have you had someone look over your resume? Human Resources Coordinator ISNT exactly the same as an assistant and I did both. Assistant is you helping the department with whatever everyone needs. Coordinators are more into special projects and onboarding tasks there's more responsibility.
