My husband refused to go to counseling, gambler's anonymous, etc. He has a serious gambling addiction. Goes to casinos & spends his all of his income, plus more. Goes & gets any types of loans he can get. Expects me to pay all bills. Wanted me to put his name on the truck & trailer I bought. I said, "NO." He wanted us to get a checking account together. I said, "NO". He got angry. And started being very abusive & threatened to hit me. Me & my belongings left.

For the gamblers there is gamblers anonymous, for those of us that are the support group (spouses, significant others, parents, children, etc) there is Gam-Anon. Every state has it, and you can go online to find meetings in your area on days and times that fit your schedule. There are no quick fixes for any addiction, but there you will find love, support, and the beginning of a new life for yourself. Many of the spouses in my group started coming before their gamblers. What you decide on your relationship is your decision, no one can give you the answer. But you can begin to heal through Gam-Anon. Good luck, my best thoughts are with you.

I've been with a gambler for 16 years. I have credit card debt and loans. I now have control over his wages so it's a bit better. But he still manages to get money from people. Then he has to pay them back it's a dangerous horrible thing to deal with. I am on the edge. My mental health is suffering. And if it continues for much longer I will end up having a nervous breakdown. It's horrible. My children and I go without because of it. It's the worst

As someone who has walked that road... with a HIGH price tag... this is EXCELLENT advice from Dave and the $25 limit is what is endorsed through GA (Gamblers Anonymous). Many people think that is crazy to restrict anyone from 'their own paycheck' to that degree. NOPE, it's absolutely the ONLY way to preserve the financial security of the rest of the family. What I want to know is what a 'good length of time' would be... cuz it looks like DECADES to me based on what I have seen in the addiction community! A year is a drop in the bucket in the relapse timeline.
