There are lots of advantages with a small layout besides cost and space: there's not much to go wrong; you can reach every part easily; it can be stored in a box when out of use, dust-free; it's very portable; you won't run out of enthusiasm when building it; and with an extra set of points running a track to the edge it can be extendable to another module or a fiddle yard. Great little layout!

I like the idea of a small, cheap and easy layout. I am currently trying 5 cm (2") thick extruded polystyrene exterior wall insulation for baseboards. It comes in 2' by 4' (60 by 120 cm) sheets. I stuck 2 sheets together to get 4' by 4' with waterproof wood glue. I had to leave it to set for a few days because the material doesn't absorb like wood. This stuff cuts really easily with a hand-saw (I wanted 3' 9" by 3' 1" because I was using OO second radius curves). I paid nearly 20 Bulgarian Leva for the 2 sheets, which is a little less than £10.

I suppose (& irrespective of scale), for most railway modellers, the attraction to construct long, sweeping runs, tunnels, elevation gradients etc is the idyll - it's certainly been something I have always dreamed of putting together; that said, your N gauge layout with an all-encompassing diorama is rather well thought out, so congratulations ! In regard to modeller's clubs, I cannot abide the "rivet counters" or the 'steam audio' fanatics - I can hear those sounds via my imagination (& that is a key element to my way of running any model railway); again - & this is my proclivity, 'weathered' rolling stock & locos - a ridiculously overpriced aesthetic - DIY, if you must, but personally I don't see the need (I imagine there will be plenty of detractors to that last comment, but I am unfazed by same). This is a wonderful little layout, & I am sure that your model club associates will take great delight in your efforts. Thank you very much for sharing ! Andrew.

I really like how this has come out. I've got a room-size O scale narrow gauge layout, and construction has stalled -- has been stalled -- for several years. I have the fondest memories of my first layout, which was in N, and was 60" x 30". I built that layout over 40 years ago, some of the houses in the village on your little layout are the same as the ones I had then. Anyway ... I think I'm going to go back to N and/or HOe or OO9 and have just a small layout or two. Unfortunately, inexpensive rolling stock is almost non-existent here in the States -- simple boxcars are $25-$30 each, and almost nothing has Rapido-style couplers anymore. It's all very frustrating as my space, budget, and time become more and more limited. Anyway, thanks for sharing this layout, and the journey of building it. I've quite enjoyed it.

Never done one before in N my question is how easy to shunt is it in N using the standard coupling
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
It's pretty easy, I have a video on it if you scroll back through our library. I use a bent paper clip on a coffee stirrer and find it easier than OO tension lock couplers
@edgein78923 ай бұрын
If the stirrer is too fiddly you could always use static uncoupler track, DIY uncoupler in the form of a bent piece of strip in strategic locations and I've even seen magnets for these kind of couplings I think but you would need to add a piece of metal to the coupler or use american couplings. I tend to do as little uncoupling of cuts of cars as possible myself, I run Arnold locos with Simplex couplers. Great for cuts of cars but the individual car has to be uncoupled by hand or static uncoupler.

Another winner from BMR. With layouts like these and others, people are waking up to the fun you can have with a small space. You don't need loads of room... that's the load of bollocks the model press has pushed for years. I've got a few projects in the works and the largest one won't be much bigger than 24 x 36. Kato products are some wonderful stuff, but you have to keep your eye on the cost. Here in the States, their goods are high priced because of the tariffs levied by a previous president, which end up getting dumped on the consumer. Ebay and swap meets are your friends these days.

Well I think it’s a really nice layout. I like the relative simplicity. And the whole ‘freelance’ concept is refreshing. It recaptures the basic idea behind having hobbies very well…having fun! As much as I admire some of the prototypically accurate layouts, they too aren’t necessarily everybody’s cup of tea. A short ‘fiddle yard to terminus’ just wouldn’t interest me (unless it was a shunting puzzle too). Playability sacrificed for realism just doesn’t appeal to me. Sometimes (not always) I suspect the scrupulously prototypical stuff is really just someone’s way of avoiding being accused of ‘playing trains’. Saw a video of a very impressive club layout awhile ago that’s taken so long to build some of the founding members never really had much chance of still being alive when it would eventually be finished. No disrespect intended but to me that doesn’t make sense. But as always…each to their own. As long as they were happy with that outcome who am I to comment? I like the compactness of a smaller layout too, the shorter build time and it being ‘eyesight friendly’ (I have similar issues). This one must’ve been fun to build and looks fun to run. What’s not to like? And with ever present cuts in defence spending I think perhaps rivet counters could be used to replace Fig 11’s at 300m anyway? Just a thought. Keep up the good work! And apologies if this was a rant! 👍

Again, I love this! 😊💜 Say, here's an idea: what if you made this layout into a _module_ that could connect to another similarly-sized layout. Maybe that connecting layout could be done in a different season, or different theme? What is inspiring this is the phone game called _TrainStation2,_ where each level is a "layout" in a different nation. It's pretty cleverly done, and each nation "layout" is blocked into smaller scenes really well. AND each of these nation "layouts" have a track or two that goes "off scene" presumably to connect with other nations. Blessings & Joy to All from Roanoke Virginia USA! 😊💜 PS) Love how you work-in buildings and such that have sentimental value: the church is a nice homage to your father. ❤

How are the points wired to the switches?
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
It's a bit complicated, I got my son to do it as electrics are his thing. I'm hoping to do a video on it at some point

How did you do the grass?
@BudgetModelRailways3 ай бұрын
I give an explanation in a earlier video. Basically PVA scatter and static grass from a puffer bottle, all pretty much at the same time in three layers

It's a great little layout. Do you also run British locomotives on it? I have bad eyes and what you told about watching the layout is very interesting! Indeed, on my British layout (only 95x85 cm) I experience less problems than on my Soviet layout (140x100 cm) 😊

Yes I can run what I like really. A soviet layout sounds fascinating

Definitely my cup of tea. I admire your skill in landscaping. Having watched some of your content and on your advice about space, I'm just delighted to have my N-gauge shelf railway in my office pootling around. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKK4dqKce7l0n8U

If you are happy with it, that's all that matters. Everyone has to be a #$@! critic if they have nothing to offer.

I like it. This sort of thing is right up my street. Plus - I think I have all the track and points I need to build something just like this (I was keeping it in a box until lI get somewhere to set it up, but I think something this size can live on a deep shelf at a push. I have some small Z gauge layouts, but they are very small, but I think one of them is about 14" deep,. In Z, shunting does not quite work that well. So I think I will try something like this, and get some peco wagon kits as you recommended. I have some of the really small kato radius track - 20-176 is the code, but I think they go one smaller even that that. I even have the Kato Analogue sound box, but I hardly used it since I bought it, so it is time to get something built
