Hi mike, I never build a proper layout before and been tinkering with a ton of track plans just by building and seeing if I would like it or not, about on and off for around 9 months. I ended up building something similar to this layout because it has an asymetric track plan, and it just doesnt give the idea of your typical train set layout. I added a curved point in the middle to add a terminus station and added a little shunting yard for a small harbor. So overall the plan has everything I wanted in a 8x3.5 board! -terminus station -harbor and freight shunting yard -loop layout with asymetric track plan -water and coal tower -small town on the sea with seaside, trees and greenery Thank you for the inspiration, I have been following you guys for years and never really committed to making an actual layout, and now I finally am getting around to doing one :)

This is soooo good. I like the unfinished stuff ‘ Work in progress’. It gives me ideas for my lay-out. You might r3member me pestering you over problems with my Flying Scotsman de-railing and shorting out at the points. Problem solve£, 1. A smaller 0-6-0 runs round perfectly, and eventually discovered a bent middle axle, as you suggested to look at alignment..

Nice idea ! I have also an idea like this, to do a "just running around" N scale layout with four different tracks, each for one train : I will model it as an estuary crossing with railway bridges more or less parallel from each other. Idea under study by now...
@mauricekerrigan675910 күн бұрын
This kit was a little disappointing as I didn't build mine in "low relief" - I joined the two halves together and the roofs don't match up! (the lines on the "felt" roof don't line up. I had to replace my roof with a single piece of their "tarmac" card. Metcalfe apologise for this in their instructions and promise to sort this issue in a future print re-run.

Looks good Mike, I take your point regarding ballasting. Another problem with ballasting is that it makes it harder to take up and re- use all the track. With respect to roofing felt, great idea, but I'd just suggest that laying it flat in the sun will remove any wrinkle and fold marks and make it easier to lay 😊
@Wolfyjinny10 күн бұрын
I inherited some N gauge track and some locos with the premise that I make a coffee table layout, I have the kit and feel I am more than capable of doing so or I wouldn't have made the promise, but, I have no idea where to start, ie- size of the baseboard so that it has enough room to be interesting and not too big to get in the living room or what to put in the scene/diorama, I have only ever had 00 gauge and only really ever dome flat loops with no scenery, this is going to be interesting to say the least.

Looks great! I did the exact same thing but with the Kato CV-1 and CV-2 sets, which were designed for their pocket line equipment. It uses 150 mm. radius curves and special small turnouts, so I was able to build it on a 24 in. by 14 in. baseboard. I will be very interested to see how you decide to scenic this layout. Cheers!

Cool idea! Love the simplicity of the track plan. I know you've done freelance & a bit of UK. Have you thought about trying to do North American locos & rolling stock? Freight & passenger cars are longer here, but I think on a layout with those curves and the length of the sidings they would fit. Or are they too expensive or too hard to come by over there? Just curious if you'd ever attempt it. :)
@MarkPurnell-er1lx11 күн бұрын
Nice what can be accomplished with two points. Add a point on the back side of the oval and you get a small yard. Your idea to mount the oval at an angle does provide corner space for optional buildings or landscaping. Lay down magnets and those spaces could be interchangeable to depict whatever suits your fancy at a given moment. Thanks. 😊

Perhaps you could think of the Ingelnook design as a terminus yard where trains are formed and leaves the yard to drop off goods at a plant, factory, goods yard, team track …. Small layouts scream “bring on the imagination.”😊

Inglenook - schmngelnook 🫤 I designed my OWN switching "game" on a 96"x16" ply board , left over from my main layout ... It's 4 tracks on either side of a big Yard-X Scissor crossing with runarounds ... even a manually operated Round Table ... Make your own car-cards & roll 1 die 🎲 to determine your Moves ... 16" Shelf brackets are readily available and you can hang it on the wall wherever you want !

"Inglenook" is immediately what I thought! 😊💜 ALSO, another point & siding in the opposite direction for even more shunting fun! This oval cries for an urban scene with the track going INTO a manufacturing building. I have been pleasantly surprised to find several street-running branches with model-RR-tight curves INTO buildings. Blessing to Mike & All from Roanoke Virgina USA! 😊💜 Maybe one of the curves away can go into a building, and the other into a "canyon" of buildings?

Hello Can you help or advise. I’ll keep this as short as possible. A few weeks ago I had a shed load of trouble with my Hornby Flying Scotsman loco with 3 coaches living up to its name, flying off the track everywhere even while going slow. In fact the slower it goes the more it jumps off. You advised keeping it simple. I restarted everything and as you said, kept it simple. Two ovals with 3 sets of points. Two coupled back to back. Learning early mistakes I made sure every piece of track fitted snug, one or two small gabs but these are no problem. I even soldered wires to fishplates, drilled holes for the wiring because I had a power failure when one set of points was switched over. I have made sure everything is flat. One or two adjustments to the securing screws at connections to even out the rails. The train ran round lovely. I stopped running for a week or so to concentrate on some scenery but this weekend decided to run the train again. The train jumps the rails at both sets of points. It also loses power at one set of points. I found that I had picked up minute debris near my scenery making, but cleaned it up, even cleaned the track nicely. Still I get power failure. When the power doesn’t fail the train jumps off, yet I cannot find a reason. Sometimes it runs round nice then for no apparent reason jumps off, or I lose power. Again I checked and have flat and even track across both sets of points. Any advice please. If I didn’t mention, I’m running 00 gauge at 1.76 scale ( double Dutch to me but you experts will understand). I can’t believe it’s weather fluctuation causing it. The set up is in my spare room, warm and dry. As warm as this blinking climate allows anyway, oh and I’m in middle England almost in Milton Keynes. Many thanks for the Miriad of advice you are going to throw at me again.

Run a different loco in case it's the loco and not the track, I've done that loads of times only to find it's the loco. Worth checking if the wheels have moved on their axles which will effect the back to back measurements
@grahamsibbert241211 күн бұрын
Hello. Many thanks for the very prompt reply. Unfortunately I only started ‘Train keeping’ in March. I bought the Flying Scotsman as a package, bought loads of good track second hand and cleaned / repaired. All good. I don’t have another loco to try. However, an update. I checked where I lost power for track to wheel connection and found a minute gap, probably about 1 mm. Rectified this. The train runs anti-clockwise with a slower but steady speed and runs reasonably well. But running clockwise it jumps off at the points and still loses power. Again checked the wheel to track and all good. It’s looking like the Hornby Frog problem I read about. But progressing. Please advise how to check the loco wheel alignment, or where to get the dimensions. I can’t see how they become out of line because it’s never fallen off or hit anything. But I’ll check.

That view is incredibly convincing, which I thing proves your point about how good the Metcalf building’s look but also how adaptable they are if you just use a bit of imagination. It’s like anything else like wagons or fences or bridge girders: just because it was designed to be used specifically for something doesn’t mean you can’t hack it about and change it! 😜
