Nice! Here's my headcanon Edward and James. My Ideal Edward: He's a Furness Railway K1 that was purchased by the Wellsworth and Suddery Railway in 1900. He was purchased by Sir Topham Hatt I in 1910, following the opening of the North Western Railway. He was overhauled after his exploit in 1962. My Ideal James: He is a LNER J11 that was purchased by Sir Topham Hatt I in 1928, a year after Molly was purchased in my AU. When James had his crash, his front buffers were damaged and his tender was destroyed. He was sent to Crovan’s Gate Works, where he'll have his extended running board, front pony truck, and a fowler tender.

First off: Edward in my headcannon is still a fr k2 built in 1896, but in 1900, he (along with the other k2s from 1896) was rebuilt a little bit with parts from the 4-4-0 Norwegian class 374 from Holland railway and renumbered 45. When he helped Gordon up the hill in 1923 (one of the years season 1 takes place in my headcannon) he was repainted in nwr sky blue. Second: James in my headcannon is still a l&yr class 28 (all 28s are moguls in my headcannon) he was built in 1912 for the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway with wooden brake blocks (being one of alot of l&yr class 28s built using parts from the older l&yr class 27s) and after his first accident when he first came to the nwr in 1925 (another year season 1 takes place in) he was given metal brake blocks and a fine nwr scarlet paint with gold boiler bands and cerulean lining.

Cool. Here's my AU: Edward: He's the 3rd of a batch of K2s built by the Furness Railway for the W&S in 1900. He would be absorbed into NWR stock in 1914. He was the main express engine until Henry was acquired in 1923. After a while of being in the shed, he would then have his day out in 1924 and then later reallocated to the Brendam branch. After his exploit in the 60s, he was rebuilt to have his running plate rise above his siderods to avoid another incident like that again. Then in 2009, it was discovered that he was developing sight issues and was thus fashioned a pair of glasses, making him one of the few sentient vehicles to require glasses and the second ever locomotive to require them after Aerolite (aka Whiff). James: He's part of a batch of N class kits built by the NWR in 1919. However, in my AU, he *wasn't* fitted with wooden brake blocks. His incident with the trucks was caused by his brakes jamming. After that incident, he was given an overhaul. He went from NWR ebony black to Lancaster red and gained new brakes. After that, the rest is history.

I personally don’t see them as siblings, since both their design could be that one many other common 0-6-0s like the J11 and the FR D5. So I don’t view them as siblings since it’s also confirmed James is the only one with the modification. Since the J11 and the D5 could also compete with the LYR Class 28, I see the second red engine as either an LNER J11 or an FR D5. otherwise yes they seem to be that way

My HC Edward is a Midland Railway Johnson Class 2 built in 1878, she worked on the MR until 1915, when she was bought by Sir Oswald Hatt as an express engine of the NWR, she arived and was repainted into NWR blue with the number 2 on her cab and NWR on her tender, she was also christend with the name "Madame Edwina Johnson" but she likes Edwina more, she was the express engine until 1920 when Mr Hatt bought a GWR Atlantic named "Amelia La France" who took over the express and left Edwina with the goods and Thomas(I'll go over him some other time)with shunting, many other engines came along and Edwina was used less and less, you probably know the rest, she had her day out, retired to a branch line and works with BoCo, Bill, Ben and couldn't be happier.

My ideal edward: an experimental 4-4-0 tender engine built in 1897 for the W&SR after the NWR was formed in 1918 he was renamed after the first fat controler's father, he was renamed sir edward topham hatt. After the war ended he was rebuild at crovan's gate with is part of the running board being held up, but after edward's exploit he was rebuild with a flat running board and does push-pull's on the brendam branch

In mt hc, Edward is an lner d40 class, specifically number 115, being built in 1899. He arrived on the nwr in 1914, and he was egotistical then, but after Timothy crashed, he learned, and gave lot's of advice. he got his branch in 1927 cuz the remaining w&s engines were old and outdated. In 1952, after Old Iron happened, Edward was given a Fowler tender and was superheated, giving him a bigger boiler. And in 1965 after his exploit, he gained a arched running board, like what you said! And James is a fr d5 class in my hc. He was originally just an 0-6-0, but after his crash, he gained a pony truck, and a Fowler tender.

In my headcannon, James is a bespoke design for the NWR and is the first of a small class of 10-12 engines (they can't all be weird prototypes and the NWR is supposed to have 80+ engines)

In my AU: In the late 1910's, the NWR was going through an engine shortage, as the majority of the pre-grouping engines were eighter too small or too old to run the mainline. To try to resolve this dilema, they bought a Furness Railway K2 (Edward) in 1915 and a 4-6-0 experimental from the GNR (Henry) in 1918. Unfortunatly, this wasn't enough. So, in 1920, the NWR commisioned Crovan's Gate works to build a new class of mix traffic engines to assist on the mainline and branches if needed. The men came up with a class of 2-6-0 with big cilinders and 180 psi boilers. Construction started in may and the first engine, n°25 "Winston" rolled out of the workshops in mid october. The second one, n°5 "James" was finished in early december. In 1926, following a high-speed derailment near Crosby of n°5, their wooden brakes were replaced with stronger and more modern ones.

That could for an alternate universe, however I envision Edward as a K1. The reason why Edward’s running board where his splashers are located look similar to the D16 was because the NWR didn’t wanna take any risks. Although, I could definitely see Edward with a D40 Cab, since I like to think during the late 40s he was rebuilt with it since his open cab makes him as easy target.
