Reflecting back on 46 years of steves taxis and my 30 years working for the company as a mechanic.

My dad was a mechanic and put the first Diesel engine in a cab in York around 1952. He then worked as a taxi owner driver for 40 years and I helped him repairing taxis for many years from around 12 years old. Dad could repair anything, it was a pleasure to work with him and I miss him so much. After he passed, I decided to go into the taxi trade and I loved it for nearly 20 years. I also did SEN school transport which I enjoyed and the kids were mostly good. The interference of the council/government about various so called safeguarding courses and the mantra of so called low emission vehicles made me decide to retire a bit early. I do miss most of the job, but not the 'authorities'. The authorities make a fairly straightforward job very difficult.

Your dad sounds like mine was, fixing things as you didn't have money for new, all our cars were mobile scrap that he kept going until the arse fell out of them 😁 Agree with the authorities making simple jobs a pain. I used to work in the cash in transit business and they are out daily snooping on you as you work.... feck that. I quit after 20 years when redundancy was offered,

End of an Era,I first saw my first Steve’s Taxi back in the early 90s with the Mark 1 Mondeo’s when I was working for allways Garage services in Huntingdon was working at a garage in Whittlesey on 911 as I remember like it was yesterday also,it’s funny how we remember certain moments in time so well,thanks fella for all the great videos,bring on 2024,Merry Christmas guys❤.

Proper trip down memory lane and i remember it i worked as a driver for steves joined late in 1998 stayed for a couple of years so i know and remember you and Steve plus others i always got on with Steve he was very fair and a decent boss i also remember you rescuing me a couple of times Alan with breakdowns i drove some of the old sierras the mk1 mk2 and later on when i came back mk3 mondeos i always worked nights and it was fun mostly shame to see steves go but i understand why Btw you've mot'd a fair few of my cars over the years to 😊 All the best Alan 😎

The 90's were such a great time. Seems like one day you wake up and all the cars that were common in that era have disappeared from the road. I cannot remember the last time I saw a Sierra estate. MK1 Mondeos are rare as hell these days. My dad had a blue M-reg estate. You have no idea what I'd give to get that car back and cruise around like it was 1998. Funny you mention 9/11. I remember that afternoon like it was yesterday. I was in year 8 at highschool, lovely late summers day. Held up leaving school. Bus wasn't to bad. Got home, put on the TV for cartoons or whatever and there was the footage of the plane flying into the tower. It was insane. Just sat and watched the whole thing on TV all evening. Nice to meet Steve. Says a lot about the world that after 47 year the taxi business is basically a non starter.

Now you mention it I remember 9/11 in a similar fashion. I'd just turned 7, and was really upset that CBBC was down to cover the attacks when I got home from school... The western world has gone progressively, but significantly, more down the pan since then.

Na mk5 mi je otisla visokotlacna pumpa goriva (na 145000 km) i pukao zupcasti (na 174000 km-vrlo vjerojatno kao posljedica nepravilnog faziranja pumpe)... sve u svemu kao sto velite, covjek je hodajuca enciklopedija😃 a plus toga stvarno si da truda i zanimljivo radi videa

Bitter sweet there for you Alan. This makes me feel slightly sad for myself, I've always been a self employed carpenter and, although I stayed for a few years in a few places, I always moved on. Financially it was sensible but personally it wasn't. Have a lovely Christmas and I look forward to seeing you enjoying your retirement. It was great to see Steve. Not everyone loves bosses but we all need them really and it sounds like he was a very good one. A very moving video. Your video libary on the MK5 modeo is a major reason I chose to run one when I finseshed with company cars and wanted to maintain my own car. So thankyou for that. I sincerely hope it stays up on KZbin. I would have loved to hear Steves views on your video making exploits. He obviously did not object to it but I am sure many employers would not be so happy.
