My Ioniq5 Died in my Driveway ☠️

In this video, I'll be talking about my recent service experience where my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq5 Limited AWD died in my driveway...multiple times.
The first time, it displayed a warning message saying the 12V battery voltage was too low, and the vehicle would not enter "ready" mode or shift into gear. I turned the vehicle off then back on, then it worked normally. A couple days later, it displayed the same message but power cycling did not help; I had to jump start it. The third time and forth time it happened, the Ioniq5 was completely dead. The power door locks would not work and none of the lights would come on. I had to unlock the driver's door with the physical key. After the third time, I charged the 12V battery fully for 12 hours overnight with a battery charger. That lasted for four days before dying the forth time, which is what is shown in this video.
This was a somewhat common problem for early production Ioniq5s several months ago, and was supposedly traced to Bluelink and other third-party apps polling the vehicle too often, preventing it from going to sleep and causing an excessive drain on the 12V battery. This was supposed to have been fixed with updates to Bluelink and the vehicle. My vehicle has had all of the available software updates.
As of the time this video was posted, my Ioniq5 is still working correctly. I will post a follow-up video if anything else goes wrong.

You're not alone in this brother. Last year, the 12-volt battery died on my 4-year old Chevy Bolt, too. They say it's a common problem with modern batteries, both on ICE cars and EVs.

True but with a whopping great big traction battery there should be no reason that the electronics can't be smart and top the 12v up (it could be charged at least many dozens of times from a full battery) whilst also giving warnings that the 12v looks to be on the way out and replace it. My friends Model S came up with such warning before the 12v failed and he got it replaced. With some makes, especially Hyundai it seems to be all pikachu face "oh my it failed I had no clue that was going to happen".

You are doing something wrong or buying cheap batteries. And all electrical systems in a CANBUS vehicle (and that is all of them) shut down for near zero drain.

@@achristian7015 The battery that died was a stock one, it had come with my Chevy Bolt. Judging by the replacement cost, I wouldn't call it cheap. Besides, I'm not the only one. Many EV owners have had the same problem. Must be some flaw in the overall EV design.

I think it's commendable that you havent simply trashed a wonderful car, but rather, stayed objective about the whole thing...even going as far as saying you might be the unlucky one. Thank you for the short but informative video. Hope your car gets sorted out somehow and that you get to enjoy driving it again. NB : I have a 2024 std range that has been assembled in Singapore. Just been told my car is not affected by the ICCU recall...but it did get a bunch of software updates last week.

Hi dear, I also have an ioniq5 since August 21st in Italy, they replaced my ICCU board because I couldn't charge in AC, but only in DC. The car has been in the workshop for 4 weeks. Now it seems to be working well. I heard about your problem and it seems to be due to too many Bluelink requests. It happened to me with the Kona and since then I always travel with a starter in the car. Let's hope no new problems arise because I really like this car and I would hate to get another one. Best regards

I had the same problem...went to the dealership and they did all sorts of software updates and sent me on my way, but the 12V battery died again days later. After viewing all the frightening KZbin videos about this issue, I was very worried that this was a serious problem. I decided to just try a new 12V battery from my local Advance Auto Parts (Diehard Premium AGM battery), and it totally fixed the problem. No dead battery issues for over a month now. I am not sure why the Hyundai technicians couldn't properly diagnose this, but I am grateful for Advance Auto Parts, and I love my car again

Do you leave the traction battery below 20% for short times. Because below 20% the 12 v battery won’t get charged from the main battery. If the 12 v as been allowed to die on a number of occasions it will damage the battery and as a result cost you a new battery.

My car isn’t two years old yet-also ioniq 5 2022, would this be covered under warranty? I did get the extended warranty if that’s any good… also, notable, my car stopped charging on the fast charging circuit, and I had multiple parts replaced, can’t remember which one exactly but I think it was at least two or three parts. One of them was a junction box.

I guess that the first time the 12V battery was low, it simply broke. I had the same with my classic Ioniq when the brakes switch in the trunk hatch did not shut off the trunk light and the battery died. It needed replacement. With my new Ioniq 6 I have had no issues so far, but I heard that one should not park it over night with a SoC of 20% or lower, since it won't recharge the 12V battery then.

I am a new EV6 owner. Great video outlining this issue. From what I have read, EVs are hard on 12V batteries since they do not draw high amperage at any given time. ICE vehicles demand high amperage during starting which helps clear up residue buildup on the anode/cathode. I believe Tesla is moving towards 48v lithium batteries in their new architecture.

I had the same problem with my Ioniq 6 after 3 months, unfortunatly I ended up replacing the battery myself because the dealer sucks! I did some reserch on this situation and I found that Teslas had the same issues a while ago. Tesla was smart and started putting lithium batteries in instead of a flooded batteries. I put in an AGM battery (by mistake but at least in was a good mistake). What I realized through KZbin is flooded batteries are not really good for ev's, the best option would be a lithium. Hyundai and other manufactures need to learn from Tesla and stop jerking around there customers. As for the car I really like it! I wish people would admit that they screwed up.

12v battery on all cars are under constant drain. Many systems always running. It’s one of the reasons why 48v systems will take over. Plus cables can be lighter due to lower current

In the Ioniq5 the propulsion battery charges the 12V as needed. One factor as to 12V drain has been added apps that are constantly using BlueLink for chatter. Hyundai now has software limiting BlueLink communications to 20 messages per 24 hours.

Other than shocks at 52,000, a new 12V battery at the 6th year point, and parking brake service, car was perfect. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, approaching 14,000 miles, zero issues. And I think it only died then because I had 2 breakdowns that left the battery dead flat twice, then went away for 2 months with the car sat on my drive in the freezing cold Dec and Jan 2022/2023.
