Great job Adam,, my son and I are restoring his 86 xjs and one of the first things we did was remove that ridulous catch can in the trunk and shortened all lines in the trunk plus added a 50 micron prepump filter.. we also changed all the fuel lines to the new and much higher plastic fuel injected lines..all double wrapped in aviation heat insulation.. we also removed both those ridiculous fuel reg's with a performance adjustable one,, with of course a gauge.. it's now 21 century specs.. no leaks easy and much cheaper to replace.. I must admit I'm fortunate to do all this since I've been a licensed mechanic for 45 years. I'm trying to find someone who replaced their archaic ignition system with a DIS setup.. Keep up the good work, and best of health to your wife and family...

Cars in Canada's chillier regions are often fitted with block heaters (in the cooling system) to warm the motor in the winter months, (all 9 of them). It might help to pre-warm a car that's sat for a while.

My XJ40 has a block heater. I suspect it is aftermarket, as it is on a coolant hose and not directly on the block.

@@alexandrecouture2462 The sump (oil pan) is probably the best place for them, if there's room. Non-congealed oil is desirable, and heat from there can rise to permeate the block.

@@parrotraiser6541 I agree. I had in the past an aftermarket magnetic block heater and it worked great, on a car with a steel oil pan.

All Opus is Hopeluss I'm afraid especially once warm. Some years ago on my v12E I fitted a US Crane system with optical trigger but I don't know if still around. Fitted into existing distributer with a plate and slots. Had a little box replacing the Opus. Still works today

It looks like that XJ12 may be using the Bosch Djet EFI system. VW used the same basic system on the Type 3 VW's and Porsche used it on the 1.7 and 2.0 liter 914's. Have you checked/adjusted the trigger points for the fuel injectors? Volvo also used the Djet EFI system in the early 1970's. Also, those cars might be a source of a reasonably priced used cold start injector that doesn't leak.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s a version of D-Jetronic. I have made a whole playlist on the D-Jetronic system. The Jaguar version does not use trigger points. It uses a trigger board that in this case has hall effect sensors one it. Sadly all D-jeteonic parts have gotten very expensive

Hi, super interesting, looking to buy 1 next month, an XJ12 van den Plas. It doesn't run, and the owner says that it has 6.8 bars pressure on each cylinder (all around), but I think that's weird, should be 14-16bar, looking into all kinds of troubleshoots of this model now.
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic Жыл бұрын
That does sound like low compression but if it has been sitting around a lot that could happen. Should be at least 8-10 bar in them

Hey nice video. I have the earlier V12 in our series 3 e type but I liked your approach to the problem. I noticed your tappets are a little bit noisy like mine, but is that that the camera sound or are they in need of adjusting. Would love to see how you approach that.
@LivingWithAClassic

The tappet noise is the exhaust leak which is worse when cold. I will be checking the tappets on my pre-HE in the XJ-S so there will be a video of that

That’s too bad! I wouldn’t try it after my experience. The XJ40 do tend to have head gasket issues every now and then. However they are pretty easy to fix and will seal with a new gasket well.

Regarding fuel - when and why do you choose fuel pressure over injector duty cycle (time open)? I realize some cars don't have a choice between the two, and a V layout with two FPRs are one thing, but there's the option, what makes you choose one over the other?
@LivingWithAClassic
@LivingWithAClassic 2 жыл бұрын
This is a very old injection system, the first electronic system. It works at a constant fuel pressure so it’s not variable like more modern systems. The ecu then changes pulse width or open time of the injection depending on load, temperature and rpm. On the ecu I can set this but only for idle and nothing else.

So it's not what I thought from the beginning, that is a weak or dying Fuel Pump? Btw and if anyone finally found a solution to resolve or found how to fix the error or reported code P1000 (In newer Jags s.a. my XK8 99), please right that valuable remedy that is just killing me!

P1000 is simply readiness monitors incomplete. It will change to a permanent P1111 when drive cycle checks are satisfied.
@samsen3965
@samsen3965 2 жыл бұрын
@@944play Thank you for the reply John but my problem is right there. To explain more for you, I live in California and our State has a smog test law (Every 2 years every car, 5 years or older must be emission checked to make sure they are not a polluter and thus can be legally driven! Now with the P1000 code that I know by definition means nothing (Only a car's OBC is recently recent or likewise), this code or anything else that turns the check engine light on, is the instant failure of the test, in fact, the center won't even do the emission test. My car's emissions levels are far below the needed pass level however because this code randomly appears and NEVER erases by itself, despite how frequently and how much I drive it, I can't pass the smog test. There are various methods mentioned in forums to correctly do a cycle completion and thus turn P1000 to P1111 but NONE to my knowledge works for me. One remedy that sometimes works, (After doing all the other in site no move maneuvers) is to start the car, then without any touch of the brake pedal, get me on a highway, and drive 5 miles at 50-60 mph steady and continuously. Then remove my foot from the gas pedal and without touching the brake pedal, let the car come to a full stop. then turn it off and on two times!!!! (Go is Jaguard engineers bewitched or under some effect?!). Long story short, I should risk my life, get the chance of getting a traffic violation ticket by police or a lot of other bad things, and still, it only might (As happened a few times in the past 10 years) code gets erased. MY QUESTION: Do you know of any ways to turn this code off/ get the cycle complete, in a more civilized or easy fashion? I love my car but either bad engineering or Government doesn't want me to own it! It's really puzzling to me as my American cars when the battery is changed of OBD II has recent the computer, will correct their cycle usually in a matter of 3-5 days and only by normal high way driving without any specific action needed on my part and why my Jag can not do this? Where am I going wrong or what... Please help me before going insane and thanks if anyone can help.
