In this video, I go into detail on how I’ve learned English and how I applied the same 3 principles to learn other languages too.
First and foremost, cultivating positive emotions and having a positive attitude will help you stay on track no matter how hard it gets.
By focusing on the process and on the act of communication, learning will be just a consequence of doing the things you like.
So, forget about learning and enjoy.
Stay tuned!

Your pronunciation is unbelievably native-like. It's mind boggling to know that you haven't even visited the US. Just a very minor suggestion: "climber" is pronounced with a silent "b". As if it was "climer". Very useful tips for language learners. Remember, the fear of sounding stupid is worse than the actual embarrassment you inevitably experience every once in a while.

Thanks, Luca, your videos are great! As an English teacher I sometimes tend to forget the perspective I used to have when I was learning my first language (English). And it was tough, or rather, it was a long, sometimes exhausting, process. Although I got my C2 certificate some years ago and I have a considerably higher level now than then, I continue making some minor mistakes, or forgetting some expressions or words, or learning new idioms, slang and stuff. Thanks to your advice, I have learnt to get used to my mistakes and weaknesses while always trying to get better. Despite not wanting to sound fussy or mean, I must admit that seeing such a proficient linguist making a little minor error (really, no offence meant, but 3:18 should be /ˈklʌɪmə/ without the /b/ sound) as I could possibly do, also gives us mortals some hope and encouragement. Thanks for all, Luca!

Thanks for the useful comment, Diego! Yes, every language is a vast ocean and you will never explore all of it. As for "climber", I realized it the moment I said it during the video but I thought that re-doing the take was not worth it. On a side note, the word "climber" - as much as words such as "calf", "salmon" etc are words where nothing sounds as it looks, and represents one of the numerous idiosyncrasies which make the English language so special. I have recently read a very interesting book by Bill Bryson (marvelous writer!): "Mother Tongue - the History of the English language". A very informative and funny read that I highly recommend to native and non-native English speakers.

Nice video as always. I also think it's important to form your own ideas about language learning, and your own ideas about what works well and what isn't so good. The reason that it's important to form your own ideas is that one can say "Luca thinks this, Benny thinks that, Olly thinks this..." but as long as you have not come to your own understanding of WHY those people think those things or why it is they might disagree, then you'll never actually take those ideas fully into your pattern. e.g. Right now I am working on a program that I believe can take an upper intermediate speaker to an advanced speaker in around 2 months. Let's say it works... great, but who will believe me? Really only I will believe myself, because I'll have put together the program myself and worked through it myself and then come to the realisation of "HEY, it works!" That's not to say you shouldn't listen to anyone, it's just to say that it's important to assimilate the ideas of others into your own experience and understanding about how the process works.

The Reykjavik Review I think today’s video was far more about encouraging learners who are feeling overwhelmed by obstacles. In a word: Psychology. Plenty of other videos are about tactics, but without a positive ‘learner’s attitude’, no technique is likely to succeed.

Hey Luca! Question! Do you change the quality in your voice? I mean, for exemple, I've noticed there is a ridiculously huge difference in the quality of let's say a latin american spanish speaker and a native standard american english speaker, Do you change that quality in your voice or you look for a voice that match your already developed voice? What are your thoughts on the subject?
@Mateo-et3wl
@Mateo-et3wl 5 жыл бұрын
Latinos almost always have higher register (pitch) than anglos. Probably related to testosterone levels. You can't do much about that. My recommendation is not to exaggerate it even more when speaking in english or any foreign language. The tendency for most learners is to raise the tone of their voice when they're feeling insecure, almost apologetic, and this can become a habit in your new language. Also, avoid rising intonation at the end of declarative sentences, as if you're asking a question. This is known as uptalk in english and is popular with young women but has spread like an infection to everyone else. It's a terrible habit, especially for men. Try recording yourself saying something naturally in your native language. Then record yourself saying it in english. Don't overthink it. When you play the recordings back, ignore the words and individual sounds, pay attention to the pitch/intonation. They should be the same, but they probably won't. Once you're aware of it it's easier to fix.

In order to learn a language at proficiency level, you NEED to leave and breath the language and be pushed in endorsing the mean of communication on a daily basis. Active learning can be solely achieved if the learner moves in a native context, avoiding people from the same country, and applying for jobs where the active use of the language is a key task. In 2013 I wasn't able to speak ENG at all, I'm now graduated in the UK. I'm still not satisfied, especially because the ENG is always evolving, hence the vocabulary in use is not a fixed feature. BUT, everyone can make it through.
