Today's video is a little different, but I'm so thrilled to finally be releasing this. In this video I'll take you on a journey to the Masai Mara, where I collected a small piece of elephant-felled olive wood that’s now inlaid into one of the most meaningful guitars I’ve ever built.
Along the way, we’ll meet the incredible people working to protect this stunning wilderness, visit the Mara Elephant Project, explore a garden filled with African plants, and even do some woodworking with the guys. I can't wait to see what change we can make and give this guitar to one of you!
The link to enter to win this guitar:
www.tempestgui...
I'm also excited to say that Alex has donated a second prize, which will be a limited edition print of the great Wildebeest migration worth £10,000.
Legal stuff: £10 per ticket, with all proceeds donated to Conservancy Guardians and the Mara Elephant Trust. No purchase is necessary to enter. Free entries are limited to one per person and can be submitted by emailing via form submission on www.tempestguitars.com with your full name and contact details. Paid entries have no limit. All entries, whether paid or free, will be treated equally. For full Terms and Conditions, visit the link above.
Thank you all so much for watching.

I fell my own guitar wood here in South Devon UK. Each guitar comes with a grid reference of origin for both Neck and body. My target customers are local and love to know they are playing locally sourced instruments. The trees are felled as part of my Tree Surgery operations and the wood is otherwise destined to become firewood.

The Tree, is a one of a kind salvaged mahogany that rolled down a steep slope and could not originally be recovered after felling. When eventually pulled out of the ravine many years later it was found that the entire main trunk was rippled with a tight curl grain pattern, as many species can sometimes display. The Tree has been distributed around the world and made available to craftspeople to raise awareness to the connection with our natural environment and the gifts so granted. In the US (and shipped internationally) StewMac is selling several batches of this beautiful wood prepared for creation of acoustic guitars.

Compelling principle for many life pursuits. Several years into carpentry (which in good time led to Lutherie myself), I jumped at an opportunity to plant trees during a slow winter. At first I thought it might replace the paper and TP I'd obviously consume, but several hundred acres later, I figured I had helped create material for a decent amount of houses as well as these days, guitars. Well played Madam. Tree planting is not for everyone, but I love the consideration of the responsibilities and processes required for each of our professions. Completing the circle.

If I win, I'm going to give this guitar to my 16 year old daughter. She is SOOOOOO creative (when it comes to her art) and she sings along (but very quietly) when I play guitar. I just want her to have a musical journey of her own and have the confidence to explore that. With your craft, she gets it and sees that possibility for herself (in the few moments that I have had her watch your vids with me)...we sat there one day for a while just watching through the build. I think she'd love it!

There are at least two suppliers (in the U.S.) that I've bought from, that produce faux ivory so realistic that you can't tell the difference...and I mean you _really_ can't tell the difference. Not that too-yellowish material that has very straight (and fake) grain lines running through it. But anyway, another excellent documentary from a Brit whose accent I can actually understand, due to her clear, concise enunciation. No Ron Wood stuff going on here!

Have you heard of the elephant Sanctuary in Africa were they use the Botanicals that have first been digested by the elephants. The plant matter is washed, separated from the elephant dung and the botanicals are then used to infuse to make a one of a kind gin. I guess if you want to give back to mutate from the wood materials you used to make your guitars. You could always plant trees. I am pretty sure there are many organizations looking for volunteers to plant trees around the world.

Back in 2007 I was building guitars and went to a meeting of guitar builders locally. One of the speakers told about a trip he'd taken to another country to source wood. He noticed that they used mahogany for framing and such. He asked them why they used mahogany for such things. The local asked him "why, what do you use in the states for that?" The speaker said he replied "We use pine mostly." The local asked "What is pine?"
