If you ever make it to Ireland you should visit St Kevins Bed in Glendalough, Wicklow, Ireland and the ruins of his monastic settlement, there is a retreat there run by nuns, offer what you can as payment for the retreat. Beautiful setting in a National Park.

My most favourite place on God’s green earth, we go a few times a year... though I only have to travel a few miles to get there. Walking the pilgrims way in summer barefoot, snacking on samphire with the god given blessings of my children is pure cathartic for us. March 19th is our next trip over, I’ll make sure to pray for you ✌🏻

It must be strange to be walking the same grounds that a Saint struggled to be holy. It’s honestly hard for me at least to really feel the significance of it. My Church actually has a small piece of St. Gregory of Nyssa’s bone (the parish’s Parton Saint) which it was kinda strange and cool to think that this was a part of this great Church Father. I honestly don’t know if this made any sense lol

I think I understand you. There is certainly mystery involved in connecting with the Saints. They are Christ's Body and we on earth who are faithful are as well. The Holy Spirit wrapped Himself in these Saints, both St. Gregory and St. Cuthbert. May we continue our lives in peace and repentance and share in the Holy Spirit with them ☦

Why is Cuthbert associated with the Teenage Jesus? There is a version of the Pentocrater Icon at his cathedral that is so ODD. Christ is clearly about 16 or so, and it hangs from the ceiling like a chandelier, but face down! You have to lie down to look up at it properly.

This is a great question and you are exactly right: it is a bit odd and feels out of place. As an Orthodox Christian, I can’t begin to understand the minds of the Anglicans who run the Cathedral. The only time I recall seeing Christ as a young man or teenager is in the icon for Mid-Pentecost. While the icon at the Durham Cathedral is odd, it is still beautiful and having venerated St. Cuthbert there, it is still a holy place and I encourage all Orthodox to visit.

Could I ask you to indulge me with a very brief explanation as to why St. Cuthbert is considered Orthodox?

He lived in the 7th century, well before the great schism, before the Norman conquest, and lived during the flowering of Orthodoxy in the British isles. That’s a basic start.

@@OrthodoxWisdom So you’re using the term to indicate the pre-1054 universal Church? Forgive me: I’m decently versed in Orthodox history and theology. I’m just not used to considering early Christianity in Britain to be Orthodoxy specifically. Perhaps you mean it in the sense of the universal Church, or - very possibly - this is just an area of my ignorance.

@StamfordBridge as an Orthodox Christian, I believe the Pope of Rome and the entire Western Church was Orthodox, was part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Does this help?
