I enjoy praying often with our ROCOR brethren; however, I am also a student of Fr Alexander. Fr Michael has, in this excerpt, completely misunderstood Fr Alexander's understanding of the development of liturgical celebration and devotion in the Church. Just one example is the misrepresentation of Fr Alexander's distinction between 'sacrament' and 'mystery'.

since Fr Alexander was father-in-law to Fr Thomas Hopko, is it to be presumed Fr Thomas' teachings also are infected?

Most Orthodox teachers since the fall of Constantinople have been infected with bad theology. Thats why you must take a wholistic look at each teacher and Saint, and compare their theology to the Saints of the first 1000 years of Christianity. This is the way. The other way is not to worry too much about theology, to pray fervently and to be active in your church and liturgical community. This is the better way according to St Gregory of Nanzianzen.

Orthodoxy in Russia was Westernized from the 18 th century. Note the abolition of the Patriarchate, the Italianization of iconography, the adoption of Western harmonies, the academic teaching if Theology on the Prussian model etc. We tend to think that at all other periods, other than our own, Orthodoxy was " purer". This incessant obsession is a form of Orthodox wokeism, not necessarily left leaning, in the religious form.

@@OrthodoxWisdom this explains alot of my frusteration. On one hand I'm relieved but on the other, devistated. Seeing the widespread acceptance and even use of psychology in the Church has caused me a lot of angst but I've been relatively quite about it, this is just one example. But hearing this now validates my concern. I am not sure what to do about this other than to be a good Orthodox Christian and ask for Blessed Seraphims prayer. Well, either way, many want to canonize father Alexander and many want to Canonize Father Seraphim. Hopefully, we’ll have a reconciliation, Similar to the reconciliation of Pope, Saint Stephen and Saint Cyprian of Carthage
@OrthodoxWisdom
@OrthodoxWisdom Күн бұрын
I would say a small minority, mainly in the OCA, want to canonize Fr. Alexander. Even the people I know in the OCA who love Fr. Alexander, even a student of his, and quote him regularly do not think he is worthy of formal canonization by the Church. Also, I'm unaware of any hymns to or icons of Fr. Alexander. There is a HUGE difference overall in how Fr. Alexander and Fr. Seraphim are viewed. Fr. Seraphim is already canonized in one diocese in Georgia, recently canonized by ROCOR-A (Old Calendarist), and countless Orthodox Christians from every place Orthodoxy exists venerate him as a saint. Many people have shared stories of his heavenly intercession. His veneration only continues to grow. To compare them to St. Stephen and St. Cyprian is not accurate. St. Cyprian's canon (Council of Carthage 258) is embraced by the 6th Ecumenical Council. Additionally, his writings have been preserved far better, embraced more widely, and have stood the test of time far better. St. Stephen is primarily embraced as a saint because of his martyrdom, not because of his teachings. In fact, most of his teachings are merely preserved in quotations made by St. Cyprian in his letters responded to St. Stephen. St. Cyprian is embraced as a saint both for his martyrdom and his teachings. While there are times where people paint with too broad of a brush, it's evident that Fr. Seraphim is a transmitter of true Orthodox tradition and Fr. Alexander is well-intentioned but misguided Orthodox theologian whose teachings have not and will not stand the test of time. It's important that all Orthodox Christians who are persuaded by some of the genuinely positive contributions that Fr. Alexander made are also aware of his misguided teachings, and cling all the more to living links to Holy Orthodoxy who are embraced world-wide and shown by God to be saints.

Bingo!! @@OrthodoxWisdom I'm OCA and admit that most of my OCA brethren in my parish already venerate Blessed Seraphim Rose while holding Fr. Schmemman at arms length. The more the OCA adopts modern views and ecumenism, even if only through the lense of scientific relevancy, the more men will naturally migrate to ROCOR.

@@OrthodoxWisdom I don't disagree with much of what you say. I will add that the fact that St Cyprian's teaching stood the test of time and was preserved, but St Stephen, while being wrong was nevertheless honored as a saint makes this a good comparison. I don't say that Fr Alexander was a saint, but I hope that at least to a lesser extent the same thing can happen, that is, his positive contributions can be remembered and his errors swept to the side.

The greatest temptation I've experienced after being abused by someone engaged in dark triad/cluster b/NPD/BPD behaviors is to condemn the person by labelling them as *only the sum of their behaviors* - rather than acknowledging the behaviors that were damaging to me, and then understanding the behaviors are symptoms of their sickness, a sickness that I also have - broken communion with God - my symptoms are just different.

Did Palamas agree with Aquinas on the point that there is no complete vacuum, which is what Aether theory is partly about? Nicholas Tesla, an Orthodox Christian, was the last major modern physicist to insist on the aether’s existence over a mostly empty universe. Although, perhaps Dark Matter and Dark Energy are in fact Aether in different densities. Perhaps “dark energy” is a very thin wispy form of Aether that is almost a vacuum but is nevertheless filling 70% of the cosmos. Dark matter is a much thicker liquid form.
