I’ve been doing a lot of mitori keiko over the years, and much more recently as I continue to prepare for my upcoming 4th Dan test in Atlanta. This by far has been one the best resources I’ve come across. Over the past month I’ve been struggling to reclaim “my” kendo, often feeling pressure to commit to waza that creates the very insecurity that you discussed. Your opinions are just what I needed to hear. Thank you so much for sharing your video and your thoughts, Sensei. By the way, you’re absolutely right about Ariga Sensei in MB. I’m in SC, too, and have had many opportunities to learn from him. His lessons are so powerful. Take care, Sensei.

@@crocozuna7013 Yeah! I quite like the sound of that. Still, I can feel my kendo shifting in interesting and good ways since my grading last December down in Bangkok. I can't help but think that my not passing might just be a positive thing in the long run. Thanks again for your great videos. I am a fan! :-)

"Stay within yourself" - the reason I passed 6th dan and in my opinion the best advice one good give. In my case there were five attacks in each of the two fights, four out of the five were men-debana-men, one was a kote-suriage-men and one was a men-suriage-men. That's what I can do best and that's what I did. No worries about anything else. Just triggered their attacks and did what I had to do. All the best for your exams!

Congratulations. Yes, when individuals over reach in grading, it only makes the Kendo less balanced. By staying within yourself, you can always have the luxury of executing Waza more within a comfort zone.
