I'm Devon, a keys player in New York City. I love having a portable and flexible setup, and while I love a Nord just as much as the next guy, I prefer to nerd out and build my own setup in Ableton. This video demonstrates my unique method for maximizing my hardware controls so that (in a nutshell) I can tap individual buttons multiple times to access different patches. It works great for a gig where I just need to throw together a handful of patches and I don't want to have to look at my computer to navigate them.
Here is another video about this plugin and some other cool use cases: • How to TRIPLE your har...

Dear Devon, thanks for putting in the effort in making this video! Thanks. I have a question: what midi keyboard are you using there? And do you use it live?

Hi Hendrik, that's a Novation SL Mk ii 61-key. They no longer make it but it does pop up on the used markets from time to time. I love it because there are a ton of mappable buttons and faders. My plan for my next iteration is to build a more custom mapped setup using a combo of a Midifighter Twister and a Korg Nanokontrol or some other customizable low profile piece of hardware that has knobs buttons and faders. That way I can travel with my 'custom rig' and use any MIDI board that's available. I have a video coming soon about my Max for Live device that controls Ableton's Echo plugin (which I map to my Midi fighter twister), so subscribe for that if you haven't yet!

Just got it yesterday and it's great! I do have a problem when loading the midi ontap. The two blue MAP buttons are not there and I am unable to map them to bank and tap. Any ideas?

Hey Marc, thanks for mentioning that, I fixed that bug a few weeks ago (because it came up with a recent Live update) but neglected to update the product - woops. Will do that now and you should receive an automated email to download it again.

I’m a gigging guitar player that handles some keys (using a Roland DS Juno). I am getting ready to pull the trigger on a DAW to run on a MacBook Pro. My understanding is that Logic Pro X can now mimic much of what Ableton Live does as far as live midi functionality. Can you confirm or offer an opinion on Ableton vs. Logic? Enjoyed your playing.

Logic has great built in instruments/effects and while Ableton has upped their game in recent years I think Logic still leads. (I mostly use third-party VSTs so it doesn't really matter to me) The biggest competitor for live performance is Mainstage (basically Logic for performance). In many ways it's easier to use than Ableton, particularly if you're just loading up sounds. When you get into the world of running tracks, automation, and just the clarity of how something is built, Mainstage starts to feel a bit too basic and Ableton pulls ahead for oh so many reasons. No system is perfect though, that's for sure!

It looks great! I have a novation launchkey mk3, does OnTap work with this controller?
@abletoots2819
@abletoots2819 Жыл бұрын
It will work with any controller! FWIW I'm sending 'note' messages from the buttons that I use to control OnTap. You'd want to make sure the button is not set to toggle because then the visual LED feedback from the controller might be confusing.

Hi Devon! Does On Tap version with Max4Live devices comes premapped with the ABBA sounds you are using in this video?
@abletoots2819
@abletoots2819 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, nope, just the blank set of mapped racks so you can drop in whatever sounds you want. The ABBA sounds come from a variety of VSTs but maybe I can document that at some point.

May I ask you which VSTs do you use? especially the String and pad Sounds…
@abletoots2819
@abletoots2819 Жыл бұрын
Sure! Strings are Ableton's Orchestral Strings (legato mode). The "Lay All Your Love on Me" pad in the intro comes from Kontakt Retro Machines, but the more ambient pad that I use all the time is just a pad built in Ableton's Analog with the TAL chorus effect (Juno chorus emulation). Let me know if you have any other questions!

One thing I forgot to mention - when I mention 'power strings' I'm turning on a MIDI effect that adds an octave above and below to really thicken them up.

Most are VSTs, but the strings are the Ableton orchestral strings pack. Using a lot of Kontakt in this one.
