Amazing video Matt! I find videos like these so inspiring to get an idea what kind of sound design the pro's are doing. So cool you are using samples instead of playing to a backing track which so many bands seem to be doing these days. You have such an imaginative use of sounds and samples which is augmented with your melodic rhythmic style. It just sounds so 'organic' ... The sonic pictures you aurally 'paint' are so pretty and detailed. I hear Bob James, Lyle Mays BUT with a Matt Johnson stamp. An excellent clip!

Thanks Matt. This is the keyboard rig (minus the Vintage Vibe ) you were kind enough to recomend to me when I ask you for a 2 keyboard setup. So far I have the Montage and working on getting the Prophet 6. Never thought to run other keys into the Audio In on the Montage and use it's fxs. Brilliant!

Unlike a lot of modern efforts that employ a lot of laziness and shortcuts in execution's, you sir employ smart playing, interesting surprises and a good deal of thought into delivering a great product and performance for your audience, not just what is easiest for you. Cheers!
@nickfoard71392 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that gig set up Matt. Here I was thinking there must be more to it, and what more should I do with my rig but actually my rig is pretty similar. Instead of launching samples off the keys I use my Korg Kross 2 sample pads but I can see why you use the keys for speed and access. I also typically have splits on both keyboards and phaser and expression pedal. The only additional thing I have is an iPad Pro running Camelot Pro which has my set list and it sends all the patch and song changes to the keyboards which I trigger with a foot switch. Camelot Pro also plays back samples in the right place so I don’t need to trigger but my drummer does need to play to a click and I feed him the backing track elements too. If you haven’t checked out Camelot Pro it’s worth a look for making a keyboard live rig set up easier to manage, you wouldn’t need to worry about getting back to that BV sample in time.

Awesome rundown! 🙂 my own setup is smaller (2 boards only), but I have rigged them together with MIDI to only have to change patch for the next song on 1 "main" machine; MIDI will then change the programme on the other board for me. If you're not already doing that, it might help you change between songs quicker (less chance of forgetting a setting in the heat of it all - which is paramount for me! 😊). Just a thought. Keep up the great videos! 🙂👍

Very inspirational .. just working on a setup of a budget version of this: a Modx that I run both a Model D for the bass sounds and a Model 15, both from an Ipad, into the USB audio of the Modx. Creating a patch was easy with three different zones, one with my favorite Rhodes sounds on the Modx, then the two analogue ‘ish sounds from the Moog apps. need to play with the effects on the Modx now for the Model 15 pads. Only thing that was giving me a hard time was to find an explanation how to get the Miodx into master keyboard mode. Works like a charm and gives the analog/Rhodes vibe with analog pads.
