I had a group of friends in college that was made up of international students. Every couple weeks we would cook dinner together, making dishes from our own cultures. It was sm fun! You really do connect with ppl thru food. I still make many of the dishes now. One of the coolest parts was going to an Asian market with ppl from 3 different countries & each one telling me what veggies/fruit to look for, the types of spices/sauces to make different dishes, & learning how they differed from each other. I hope you’re able to connect with a group of ppl to do the same - ask your local library!

I'm a 63 year old black woman. When I was about 16 I was taught by a 4 ft 10 Italian grandmother how to make sauce/gravy. We did it in her basement kitchen, it took 7 hours on the back of the stove. It is the best sauce/gravy ever!! Thanks Nona G!! Rest easy❤❤

You should try making it. A Korean neighbor taught me when she saw I liked making my own veggie and surimi sushi at home. Oh my! It's kinda easier for some folks as its mostly cooked ingredients and no raw fish. And trader joes toasted sesame oil is nice and rich. I haven't had the chance to try their gimbap yet as it's always sold out.

I’m glad your parents were hard(ish) on the tteokbokki; I love Korean food but there’s none in my city, so TJ’s tteokbokki is the only tteokbokki I’ve eaten that I didn’t make myself. I found it way too sweet and not savory or spicy enough, but I wasn’t sure if that was just how it was supposed to taste!
