Parenting is HAAAAAAARD. Parenting and loving your children from a place of deep seated fears can complicate things even more. I am learning to parent from a place of faith.

As a cushite in her 30s people make me feel ancient for not being married. Comments like, “olewa tu ata kama ukiwachwa at least ume cross hiyo stage,” mum says. Dad on the other hand has stopped hinting (the same guy who caught you dead with a boy) now he’s more direct, “uki pata mtu yeyote kujeni haraka hiyo nikha ita fanywa hata usiku.” And the usual quips from aunties, “hiyo masomo yako mingi bado uta rudi jikoni.” I love women like you, it’s time African parents let us figure out life in our own timeline. Thanks for this ❤️

I still hug mine with one eye open! We talk but in her eyes I still don't have a worthy career compared to the rest of my sibling's. I mean what is digital or data science or AI or IOT or social media - mothers and daughters what a stifling and contradicting relationship nonetheless thanks for sharing Kalekye.

This here is why I really admire you dear. You are bold and fearless in living your truth. It's not easy but nonetheless you do it. Hongera kelitu. Athimwa muno na muno. Na mami athimwe muno na muno. As well as mbaa Mumo onthe. I didn't realise how much we have in common. I guess looking in from the outside, we never really see the trauma of one child, of never feeling enough, especially if they are not suffering the obvious pains of abuse as we know it. I now understand why what I think as my obvious reality as a daughter seems so foreign to others, even those in the family. I am not yet where we can sit, but I'm certainly on the path to healing. And forgiving her and myself. It's nice to hear someone who is further along the path tell it as it is. And show that indeed there is joy in the morning. Thanks Kalekye and big hugs to you. I know that was not easy.

Love this! I'm also an only daughter and the last-born in a family of three kids. I can completely relate with the tumultuous mother-daughter relationship. I experienced and still do experience all those projections of fears she had and still has. I only aim to do better, should I ever have a daughter. Thanks for sharing, Kalekye!
