We bought a 2015 450. It was the owner's 3rd Lagoon and he ordered it with some mods that he had learned from owning the previous models. Sailed it last month from PR to West Palm for some mods and will be bringing it to its home in New Bern, NC. Learning to be an electrician, plumber, elctronics installer etc :) (as you know). We appreciate your content and will stay tuned for more.

When we were in the market, we were waffling between a 400 and 450. Sounds like a well equipped boat. What mods put on by the previous owner do you particularly useful?

I really like how you have multiple points of redundancy on your vessel...awesome! Whatever you do, however, do not become complacent. The best thing to have out in the open seas is the ability to troubleshoot when caca hits the fan. I.e. a something hits your rudder or puts a hole in your boat...do you have a way and the ability to calmly remedy the situation short of abandoning the vessel.
@offthestarboardhull89135 жыл бұрын
If I had a total destruction of both hulls, my inflatable, and my life raft That would be hard to handle. There is so much more to consider than just the logistics of the the systems on the boat. Everything you do to help is like dropping a coin in the piggy bank. The coins can come from a variety of places. Not only is it reasonable to have a prepared boat but also a prepared skipper and crew. Most horror stories you read about almost always come from a situation that should have been avoided. Do not sail in Hurricane zones, don’t sail from a good anchorage because your guests arrive in 2 days, don’t be sucked into the harbour chat regarding weather. If you have common sense and time you should rarely be in any situation that makes you uncomfortable and or at risk. Almost 3 years out and we have seen 30 knots twice and both time we were vert close to shore so we dropped the anchor and waited it out. The second time was 4 days ago. When you are out cruising the world the general shape of most boats is good but there are about 25% that are disasters waiting to happen. Whether it’s the boats condition, the captains condition or both. When I refer to the both I mean we sailed from Mexico with about 50 boats, in the Group was an old man in a piece of shit boat and going solo. He did not make it, no sign of the old guy and no one was that surprised. 2 other boats were crap and they called MayDay enroute and were saved by other boats. So the wrap up it’s not just the equipment onboard it’s the ability to use and the mind set of everyone onboard. Cheers

Hi Murray, the propeller is from an ultra lite. Great video and quite an impressive laundry list. Never is too much when it comes to safety. I am a Safety professional and I might suggest fire extinguisher at the cockpit and large enough to handle an engine fire or maybe you can install those automatic engine fire extinguishers. Happy safe sailing. Ahh almost forgot, have you though about an EPIRB unit?

+KELLY KRAFT Hi Kelly Thanks for your Kind words. Yes i do have CO2 and Smoke detectors aboard. Monday is soap day and "MUSKOKA" gets a weekly bath as she is my baby, as for the other maintenance there is nothing out of the ordinary, it just gets done. My next video is one about the coolstuff aboard that keeps us fit and engaged. "MUSKOKA" is our home, we do not have a land base to head off to so if we enjoyed something on land we tried dam hard to get it on the boat and make it work. We believe in and rely on technology and the boat is well equipped. Call us new age sailors, no sextant. Thanks again for watching and if we get near a port that is close to you give us a shout out. Great vid thanks can you give some indication of the 400S2 hull speed across various angles etc, many thanks in advance...
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
tonyo The 400 gets to 6 and 7 knots very easily then its a chore to see the 8-9-10- knot speed. You have to sail like a racer to maintain anything above that. Like most Cats to the wind performance is not the best but better than most give credit for, in 15 to 25 knots my boat works quite well to windward. In light wind not so much, I have become a cruiser and now I set the sails and almost forget them so average speed is lower than a race day effort. I'm not in a rush I must say that at the end of the cruising day we are surely ahead of most cruising boats. Cheers Scott and Laurie

I made it to the end matey, if you knew me you would know why. Questions. Have you ever considered forward facing sonars for collision avoidance, they are normally used for fishermen, but would work well on a cat. Do you use any EPIRB devices? they are great for MOB situations. Anyway that is enough from me, I'm going to episode 8. Thanks
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
I have a sonar in my Port hull, not a full forward facing but it gets a bit of a look.. Our MOB beacons are for the boat not on epirb Hang in there, don't OD on the MOB, EPIRB, Code"0", AED, MMSI, AWA, VMG and the like Cheers Scott

I very much enjoyed this video. Very informative and kept my interest to the very end. I like your stile of narration, kept me in stiches through out the video. I can see you have been single for quite a while. All the information is extremely important. How many solar panels do you have and what is the wattage you require a day? ( 24hour period?) Oh, by the way, what a beautiful rig MUSKOKA. Thanks
@offthestarboardhull89137 жыл бұрын
Mike Scala So glad you liked the video. The solar array consists of 5 - 300 w panels, I really don’t know what the power requirements are per day, every day is very different, suffice to say I have never drained the batteries, never. Cheers Scott

Hi Mike, Laurie here. Scott is not single as far as I know. We have been in a committed relationship for over 5 years and living together in very close quarters for over a year. I will have to review the video to see what he said to indicate that he has been single for quite a while.

Scott, A ever informative video for a prospective 400S2 owner to learn from and get ideas for systems. Question if you would be so kind to answer. Did you buy a 4 cabin version and convert the forward cabin into your workshop? I love the idea of a workshop and are considering this layout.

Hey Shane Glad you enjoyed the video. my 400s2 is a 3 cabin layout. I f you check back a bit later you will find a video that is all about the boat. i have content and will edit this week. Cheers Scott and Laurie

Great info! Thanks for sharing! So 1 question with a 33kg anchor. If you had to manually haul it up, won't it be a bit too heavy?
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
Johnny don't Go there. There is a manual mode on the top of the windlass but it would be a son of a bitch to haul up with 500' of chain as well. I do have a brand new windlass in the box in case of the inevitable burn out of the stock unit. So there you are,m hope that answers your question. Scott

You probably have a bike helmet. But you should use it when climbing the mast. Certainly not so bad for us with catamarans, but I learned that by a mono hall sailor. It may fluctuate much up there. Good to protect your head. Greeteangs from Norway.

Hi Laurie and Scott, well I did make it to the end of the video and enjoyed it very much. I also have dreams of buying and outfitting a Cat like yours in the next 5 years to do exactly as you're planning. I'm from Alberta and pent my youth on the BC coast and grew to love the ocean. I hope to spend the first couple of years exploring the Pacific Northwest in the summers and Mexico in the winters, and then to eventually circumnavigate the globe. I'm trying to put a budget together for long term maintenance/repairs/replacement costs of all the sails and related rigging so I was curious if you have any information or perhaps have even done a budget for yourself? I'm fairly mechanical so I have already done a budget for engine and drivetrain but don't know anything about sailboats so I'm not sure what the average lifespan would be for sails, ropes, cable rigging, masts, etc would be? I'm hoping to be able to determine an approximate cost per mile to set aside for average repairs/replacement of all the sailing specific equipment. Thanks in advance and happy sailing! Jesse
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
Hi Jesse We have not done a formal budget and are spending more than we originally thought. Basically, there is a 5 year "honeymoon period" when buying a new boat after you have outfitted it as you wish. The basic rule of thumb for maintenance costs is 10% of the boat cost per year. Depending on the use of the rigging, lines and sheets last about 4-5 years and halyards 1-2 years as they have tremendous loads on them. Sails last about 10 years, but can last up to 15 years with proper care. I hope this helps. Cheers, Laurie and Scott

Made it to the end, 9 F.E's and bear spray, now that is what i call a safe boat, thanks for sharing! i can imagine firearms are frowned upon in some if not many ports; is it possible to be licensed and stow A weapon on board for piracy concerns in some areas of the globe? if it is not possible to course clear of aforementioned areas...
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
Michael - Being Canadians, we are not at all comfortable with firearms, but that is a personal opinion. The incidence of piracy is much lower than being assaulted walking down any street in most cities. Thanks for commenting, Laurie and Scott

Yes, I made it to the end because I like excentric people with a nice spleen. I do not care about what - firekillers and handlebars is just superb! It looks a bit bathroomy for my taste, but I love pragmatism. I learnt some things here - thank you.

Greetings and thanks for the video. I see we share a lot as far as safety is concerned. I have a lot of redundancy on my own boat, yes even the spray that is not for bears :) . Particularly thankful for showing the thermal camera. Good idea!. So my actual boat is now for sale and am thinking of getting a Lagoon, on which I plan to save a space for a workshop as you have..so here's my question: how did that work out for you in terms of loading all that weight on the port bow? Did you do anything to ballance it on the other side, or do you store the heavier stuff there to keep even?. Thanks for any insight you can give me on this, and happy sailing to you both., Cheers Jose
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
Hey Vid, First off lets get this off the plate; if I was to be in the market right now I would buy another Lagoon. If money was no object it would be the new 42, if money was a concern it would be a used owners version 400S2. That said my boat is loaded and yes the port hull is in the water 1 inch more than the starboard hull. I have taken heavy items out of the workshop and put them under the Starboard hull bed, the results were marginal. This brings me back to why i bought my 400S2, this boat still sails well loaded, I have sailed with 3 Leopards, a 48, 44 and the new 40. My fat loaded Cat lead the pack. I have to add that I own every sail known to man and I am not lazy, I put out and trim everything I have onboard. I find that it is very easy to reach 6 and 7 knots, beyond that i need wind and trim becomes crucial, 9 knots happens often 12 and 13 knots not so much. I think because the loading was done a bit at a time i have not noticed much difference but my gut tells me if this boat was empty it would perform better, that said I'm cruising in comfort and no regrets. Hope this helps, if your serious about the Lagoon we can get into the details if you like. Make up 10 well thought out questions and a video would arrive custom ordered. Cheers Scott and Laurie

Awesome video. Saw it when it came out and now watching again, now that we finally have a cat too, your safety & equipment pointers are important to us. Question! Have you installed any hand-holds into fiberglass and if so what did you use to secure and seal from weather?
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
Hi Sailing Finally, Good question. All the handholds we installed were not installed in fibreglass. The ones that were in fibreglass were factory installed. Enjoy sailing in your new cat! Cheers, Laurie and Scott

+Greg Brewer No Epirb yet Greg and maybe we won't have one. Direct communication with my rescuers makes more sense. I might change my mind, I have heard so much crap about the Epirb being ignored , it makes me wonder. I will have 2 Sat devices and a means of charging, I can get in touch with these devices before the boat sinks. Still up for debate. Cheers

I enjoyed your insight. Why did you name the boat MUSKOKA? Why did you choose a Lagoon? And why a 40ft vs a 44ft?
@offthestarboardhull89138 жыл бұрын
+Roger A. J. Aquin Hey there Roger; Thanks for your comment. First off the name comes from my home town area, my family has been living in the Muskoka area since 1940's. Muskoka is a vacation playground for Canadians and Americans for the last century. For the last 4 years I have been caring for my Dad on Vancouver Island, that is why I am here now, he was unable to return to Muskoka ( his home town) due to health concerns. When we bought the boat he wanted to call it "MUSKOKA" so he could go to Muskoka every day. Kind of a neat thing and the name stuck, so in honour of my father and the area of Muskoka the boat has a name. Why a Lagoon? Lets just say in an upcoming video that will be answered in detail, suffice to say that if I was to be on the market now for a new boat knowing what I know now as an owner of a Catamaran for 2 years I would have Lagoon at the top of the list. As for the 40' Lagoon 400S2 the size for my needs ( 2 people with the odd guest) it fit the bill. Big enough to be very comfortable and easy the handle and care for. There is a point at which the bigger boat is more work than it is worth, the L450 would be starting to get into that area of too much boat. I would love a L560 but the hired crew would be a problem, I can't afford that. Cheers Scott and Laurie S/V MUSKOKA Sorry it took so long to reply!
