Not sure what you chaps in the US call it lol but using tin foil makes a really interesting alternative to expensive Yupo,.Quite a lot of art/ embroidery and textiles equipment are ridiculously expensive to buy in the UK ,so invention becomes necessary if one wants to stay creative ! The thing with using foil is that it will mould itself around canvases ( old tacky canvas pictures even will make a good base) .I just use PVA blue or a quick spray of mounting spray to adhere the foil to the background .The thing I love is by heavily applying rubbing alcohol ( again yet another not commonly thing used in this weird little island) lol the foil showing through in parts can give a really amazing ethereal quality .Thanks for sharing this with us ,Sophie x

I love that he went straight to it even though he did not prep the canvas. That's the beauty of art. Alcohol inks are generally used on non-porous substrates like tiles, Yupo paper, the backside of certain types of photo printing paper, glass, metal, ceramics, etc...non-porous substrates. The inks will sink somewhat into a canvas whether it's gesso'd or not. Most people prep the canvas with a product you can buy at Home Depot called Kilz2 for alcohol ink painting. I use another gloss product which also works. If you want to use alcohol inks in a canvas the most important point is to blend the Kilz2 when prepping the canvas. Give the canvas a couple coats(dry between coats) and remember to blend well so the canvas does not have steaks. You will then find the inks will flow and not seep into the canvas. Some examples of non porous substrates for alcohol ink painting are:Yupo paper, ceramics, metal, the backside of some glossy photo printing papers, tiles,etc.

Hi there thank you for the info !! I wanted to ask is there any other primer that can replace Kilz2 as I can't find it in my country :( ? I saw a video where an artist used gesso spray..
@1disneyana4 жыл бұрын
@@lucamidorikawa8629 Hi Luca, I'm Mimi. I use "Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish" to prep my canvases for alcohol ink painting. I just love painting with the inks on a large canvas. I don't know a lot of people who use this (most try Kilz2), but Liquitex Gloss works great for me. It's a bit thick so must be diluted with water to thin it and so it's just not sitting on top of the canvas. It binds to it and becomes part of the canvas. I add about 1/2 cup of water in a plastic cup. Then I add about the same amount of the "Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish" to the water. Mix it very well to avoid lumps in it. You want it to be quite watery, thin when you pour it on your canvas. I take a wedge or small craft squeegy to spread it on the canvas in the beginning, but I always find myself using my bare hands to spread it evenly so there are no lines when it dries. Both Kilz2 and the Liquitex will leave lines if not mixed well in the cup and spread well on the canvas. I like using the Liquitex Gloss more than the Kilz2. Liquitex products are sold around the world and I hope you can find it where you live. You might try this technique on a practice canvas at first so you get a feel for spreading it on your canvas. Once you get the hang of it I think you'll really like using it to prep your canvases. Most important: mix well and spread evenly. I had hoped to teach a class on this technique eventually, but I became ill, had to take a break from art. I've had to have multiple surgeries. I have another major surgery coming up in 2 weeks. I can't wait to get the surgery over with, heal, move forward in life and with my art again. I hope this info helps you. Have a great week. Mimi 🌻✌&❤
@lucamidorikawa86294 жыл бұрын
@@1disneyana Wow thank you so so much for this information ! All the best for your surgery and I hope you get back to art as soon as possible and start teaching :) Liquitex is available readily in my country so this makes my job so much more easier ! Interesting.... I wonder if another coat of gesso before using the al inks would help eliminate the inks sinking into the grain of the canvas. My fav was the green & hot pink & magenta & purple. It was sooo happy & bright & I loved it. So disappointed that you blew that all away... especially after it got muddied with gray.

Just a few budget suggestions here: I haunt thrift stores for ugly painted canvas pieces. Now you have a prep ready canvas to start with. Then do YOUR stuff as usual. The cost is great cause the uglier the painting is, the less expensive it will be. Especially good if you are going to do a large piece. Love this site - lots of talent out there. Oh...btw, has anyone tried adding gold flakes sprinkled over the piece once you are done. Gives your work a little elegance.

Composition and the overall design not too shabby Will. So nice to see you enjoying this medium but be very careful of that fumes, should probably wear a fume (not a dust mask which I see some do??) mask. Sorry it's been a minute for me to get back to you. I hope it's not too late. I'll call inks and acrylic inks move completely different acrylic eggs are water-based and water doesn't evaporate as fast as alcohol. So the end up looking completely different when they are dried. Not better or worse just completely different. with alcohol inks I never use water only alcohol. The higher percent of isopropyl alcohol you use the more the colors will move and the faster it will evaporate

What airbrush system do you recommend?
@WillBlackArt6 жыл бұрын
So when I bought mine I only had two criteria. I didn't want the cheapest because I wanted it to last, and I wanted it to have good reviews. This is the one I settled on: PointZero Airbrush Dual Action Airbrush Kit with 3 Guns www.amazon.com/dp/B010TQCOEE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_sTn7uHzQEMiFF

I love your videos so much! You make me laugh and you make beautiful art! I wonder if I'm the only one talking to you and guiding the painting by offering suggestions throughout your videos or if everyone does that?

You know, I actually kind of liked those Tangerine dots. When something like that happens you know sometimes it might be a changeup to just go with it LOL or maybe it's just us acrylic pour fans that are getting desperate for the cells LOL

Would it be possible to do a version of this, using a hairdryer if it had an improvised small outlet?
@WillBlackArt6 жыл бұрын
I dont see why not! I switched from a hairdryer because it was too loud on camera. Otherwise it works fine. Best of luck Maureen!

I think you may need to bow your head to the rules of water colors. In watercolors there is no white, the white is the paper showing through. This makes watercolor the most difficult medium to use and control. My #1 rule is a mistake is never a mistake. #2 rule is work from lightest color to the darkest. I see you want to use these colors as "accidental art" So you must master the art of laying down color and bow to what is produced in the accident.
@WillBlackArt6 жыл бұрын
Oh man watercolor is hard, but it is so beautiful when mastered. I will keep this all in mind when making my next ink piece. Thank you for the tips :D

than you do not know true origin of watercolor
@marysmith17576 жыл бұрын
You can use masking tape or masking fluid. You can also use white or gauche (in white) . I think framing the finished work is the hardest part. I can never find a large frame. that's why I turned to canvas :)

Woahhhhh I didn’t know you could use alcohol inks on a canvas. Did you treat it with a special ground so it wouldn’t be so porous?

was that just alcohol you poured on the canvas first? love it!

Yes it was. I'd like to dilute my alcohol on the canvas so that I get more control over the gradiation.

I hope that you will take an alcohol ink lovers' tweak on your recipe, not your talent or your beautiful painting??? In order to achieve the desired thin line you mentioned; you may want to try using the ALCOHOL BLENDING SOLUTION rather than drugstore rubbing alcohol. While it may seem they are interchangeable, they are NOT. The blending solution has resins that I'm sure you understand are necessary to the finish and the behaviors that we love about alcohol paint/inks. If you are using buckets of the solution, I am sure there is a recipe on the web for a home made HOOCH that will replicate the results. At least try it on a small canvas and see if it gives you that crisp "broken glass" line you are hoping for. If you have plenty of time and money to burn, try liquid hairspray! they pack that stuff full of crap that might really twist the colors and chemicals around on canvas or yupo!!!!
@WillBlackArt6 жыл бұрын
Ill have to try it out. I bought some glycerin (supposedly the other ingredient in blending solution) to try and make my own, but never got around to it. Ill have to go make some now. :)
@lisaangel3156 жыл бұрын
Glycerine is water soluble, and made from roses (petals, maybe?) A small amount is in blending solution to help move color around. Its other uses are to soften cake icing, soap and as a paint conditioner. By virtue of what it is, glycerine will keep the inks wet and sticky, and you wont get the line you want. I've used it in place of embossing ink in a pinch and mixed with watercolors to keep them wetter longer, and with water to refill my dove blender. I'm sure you will find the perfect formula for what you are doing...no matter what you do with the blending solution, glycerine is good to have around.
@ChrisAndCats6 жыл бұрын
Will Black the only thing to bear in mind if you like spraying alcohol is that you can't spray blending solution. Tim Holtz mentioned that in a demo i watched, apparently it has ingredients that shouldn't be airbourne. You probably know but thought I'd mention it as Lisa Angel was talking about blending solution you ☺.
