So im new to the channel, and definitely dont know anything about this board or all too much about building boards (granted i do have experience with fiberglass and other composites) However I reckon you may be spot on about chickens pecking at it damaging the foam core, used to have a few sheet of various kinds of foam at the shop i worked at and had em leaning up against the garage. Ran some errands with my boss for a few hours and when we got back his 60 or so hens had pecked damn near half a sheet of EPS clean. Chickens friggin love eating foam for some reason, like they crave it. Craziest thing I've ever seen in my life lol. Chicken foam tangent aside, i really did like the voice over with the timelapse of the video and the actual deep dive into the boards history. Really like this form of presentation.

Hey man, welcome!! Haha, theres a shaper in Maui, Hawaii named Matt Kazuma and he is constantly chasing chickens out of the back room of his factory who are always trying to eat is EPS blanks! 😂😂 Dude needs better security! Glad you enjoyed the video!

This was way better than the Bay Watch board video. I enjoyed watching you work on it. I do have a question. Why did you add another coating of fiberglass to the board? Doing so seems like it would make the board so heavy that you can't ride it because it would be too heavy and slow. Is this board only for display and not for surfing?
@smallkinedings9 күн бұрын
Hey hey! So I used a 2oz cloth on either side so added 4oz total, plus the fin, plus the resin coats. While the board is not on the light side, it's certainly not so heavy that it cant be surfed. I've had modern backyard shapes come in for repair that weigh more than a resto like this one turns out. That said, this board will probably only be surfed once and then live it's life on the wall

The patina that accumulates tells a story and you’ve preserved it and the beauty of this old board, even though it doesn’t perform comparatively to today’s boards. Thanks for sharing and demonstrating your skills and artistry.

I have a Wayne Parks lightning bolt. It has his dolphin image in the bolt, apart from that there is no serial number on it at all. I was told by a serious NZ collector that Wayne didn't put serial numbers on his. Plus he also had a couple of shapers who worked for him. I also have another parks board with no serial number.
@smallkinedings4 ай бұрын
Very interesting! I wonder if it depended on the era of board? He was pretty adamant that there would/should be a number if it was his. I've got a couple of Parkes boads and they've all got numbers on them, I'll ask him what the deal is next time I bump into him! Not sure Wayne ever had ghost shapers either, just his glasser as far as I was aware? Such a rich history though, I'm sure I could be wrong about that! Very cool that you've got a bolt of his! Hang onto that thing!

After I saw this restauration, I liked your video so much that I went to get one single fin from 1975 to do some like you. Glass is thick, but I've seen that the bumps from the bottom look like crack lines on the top layer, but not going getting through the cloth, like on a phone with a glass screen protector that cracks but only the top layer. I've seen it in a couple of boards already. Is that something normal on old boards? Would it be enough to just sand the top layer and replace the top coat with new one? Thanks. Your channel really motivates me to work on these projects.
@smallkinedingsАй бұрын
Unreal, happy to hear it! These are great boards worth hanging on to! Yea, quite common. Resin without glass doesn’t have a lot of strength and tends to crack. Boards with too much resin left on their resin coats tend to crack. It often doesn’t affect the cloth beneath, it’s just cracking in the resin layer above. Two choices: 1. Sand the area and brush some resin over it, sealing the crack. Take note though that this doesn’t solve the ultimate issue of thick resin and it’s likely to crack again in the future. Maybe in a year, maybe in 10 years. Who knows?!! It kinda depends how often and how you surf it. 2. Sand the resin and crack away until you see cloth weave. Then replace the resin but with a thinner coat that is less likely to crack. The downside of this is it will use more material as, if your crack is say, 2 inches long and you only sand that 2 inch area down to cloth then you end up with a 2 inch long low spot in your board. So, you need to blend that low into a greater area so it doesn’t look and feel so obvious (like a pressure dent). There is no wrong choice, it all depends on what you want to get out of the job / board and how much time, money and materials you have to put into it. Enjoy 🤙

Just a question re sealing paint in: Would you recommend always glassing over big jobs like this if weight isn't an issue? or if board is already structurally sound is just a hot coat/gloss resin coat suffice - maybe even a non-water based spray can clear coat? I'm unsure what mating issues might come up with with this molotow stuff. Cheers!
@smallkinedings7 ай бұрын
Hey hey! So very job dependant but with large paint jobs like this I try to always have cloth over the paint. The problem with paint under only resin is that theres a good chance of sanding through that resin coat in an area or 2, 3, 4 or 5 which will damage your paint work. The exception to this would be something like pin stripes where you can sand very carefully and slowly but cloth over paint is always the preference if possible. If I can't get cloth over my paint it's usually because the board is epoxy and I try not to paint beneath epoxy. In that case, clear coat is the answer like you suggested. MOLOTOW do a good gloss clear and Matt clear as well. I've never had any kind of bonding or other issues with MOLOTOW. I swear by the stuff.

I def prefer your way as long as it's still rideable at the end! Thanks and love your channel 🤙

This one dis gain some weight. Because of the condition of the glass and the foam I decided to laminate it with 4oz cloth as it really needed the extra reinforcement. Usually though for a job like this, I would use 2oz cloth and that doesn't add a noticeable amount of weight. If your boards in good knick in the big scheme of things (not totally rotten) then I reccomend 2oz highly

Nice work. Just my opinion here. What is and what is not a "real" Lightning Bolt. When you get past the early Bolt shapers they become less and less a real Lightning Bolt. A "Bolt" shaped at the Hobie factory by Terry Martin (who was a great and historic shaper) is not as true a Bolt as those made by the original Hawaiian shapers. When they got licensed out all over the world it became even less authentic. The real collectable Bolts were done by these guys. Again just my opinion. Others may disagree and I understand. These were the real Bolt shapers. Unit 1: Gerry Lopez, Reno Abellira, Barry Kanaiaupuni, Tom Parrish, Jeff Hakman, Owl Chapman, Don Koplein Price: $190. Unit 2: Rory Russel, Brian Hamilton, Tom Eberly, Peter Trombly, Wayne Santos, Robbie Burns, Cowan Chang, Bill Barnfield, Mark Angel Price: $175 Unit 3: Steve Walden, Russel Kim, Tom Nellis, Brian Hinde, Joe Blair, Bill Stonebraker, Tony Anjo, John Carper, Price $160
@smallkinedings3 ай бұрын
Good question! Now days, to me the lightning bolt is a little bit like skateboarding. I get the same icky feeling when I see a company/brand try to use skateboarding in their advertisements or brand images when they have nothing to do with skateboarding. When I see brand new boards now days with lightning bolts on them to me it just feels like an attempt at a cash grab. It would be different if it was a replication of an old board template. A recreation and a throw back to an old pin tailed Lopez, then I get it. I get so many unrelated new boards with bolts on them in for repair now days, EPS/epoxy fish, mini mals, twin fins that have nothing to do with what lightning bolt once was. Back in the day, there was a license to produce lightning bolts. Here in NZ only Knackers and Wayne Parkes held that license (Wayne still technically has it). Wayne also holds the Atlas license too and still produces Atlas logs and on the same token it would be ick if I branded a board of mine with the atlas logo. The shapers you’ve listed are the bees knees for sure, especially unit 1. Collectibility wise, those are the signatures you’re looking for! By the end of lightning bolt there were licenses to produce all over the world and that’s probably one of the many things that lead to their eventual downfall.

u can have that bolt, one of the most boring graphics, people wear that sh!t here in Venice like it’s going out of style & it is. if u r into generics. Who came up with it, who keeps it current?
@smallkinedings9 ай бұрын
Ooo, thems fighting words. A logo from the early 70s that changed surfing, surfers, surf culture and surfboard manufacturing. The lightning bolt is a visual representation of a breakthrough in surfing, what was possible to make, what was possible to surf, both waves and surfboards. The simplest of designs that embodies some of the world's greatest shapers and thinkers, surfers and locations ever known. A representation of a simpler time, a time of discovery and break throughs, a time that still dictates surfboard and surfers style and design to this day. Arguably the most sought after boards, even in 2024, the logo doesn't need to be high rez, high tech, complicated or artsy because what it represents is all those things and more. In that way, the simplest logo is the best logo. No other logo brings up so much history from almost every continent in the world with a single glance and no logo within surfing probably ever will.
@crypttonite9 ай бұрын
@@smallkinedings however that may be, the problem with this logo & that’s what it is, isn’t because it is so simple, it’s totally unoriginal, did Gerry Lopez aka style defined like lightning bolts especially? It demonstrates a lack of thought. Idk if the examples I see regularly are leftovers from the shop here in Venice or if it’s a new batch of fools in awe of banality. People will tell you the LA Dodgers logo is great. No one owns surfing. A lot of times certain select people get credit for things. My idea of surfing, growing up land locked were surf t shirts available at the mall, gotcha etc were totally mainstream in late 80s. Derek Ho & Tom Carroll. Mostly Derek has been my idea, him on an Island Classics board. He was still riding that handmade board up until the end at 55. I have seen posts of people shit talking island classics boards for being out of date design & they had a laminated nose guard. There’s personal footage of Derek riding Pipeline for fun. His take off, he brought that to surfing. Top in my world & the ic image are surfing to me. Not selling it.
