You're a hard worker Lauren and you do what needs doing! I hope you get your windless working correctly so you don't have to worry about the possibility of yanking that anchor up manually. Have a wonderful visit with family. Hopefully you will fit in an episode or two while away. We all miss you when you are away and KZbin isn't the same without you (and Mako)!

Hi Lauren, You mentioned that your auto pilot has problems above 20knts of wind... At 13:01 in the video I noticed that your auto pilot is trying to correct for weather helm in what appears to be pretty moderate wind. If you are trimmed with weather helm at say 12 knots of wind and you don't make any sail adjustments as the wind climbs to 20 knots the weather helm will just get stronger until it eventually overwhelms the ability of your auto pilot to correct. A fun exercise is to set the wheel/rudder dead straight ahead and try to adjust course with just the sail trim. if you are constantly falling off downwind then sheet in your main a bit more and that will bring you up. If you are rounding up then sheet in the jib a bit tighter or let out the main. You would be surprised how incredibly effective this is- it is literally almost like having wind vane steering. The boat will just keep the same angle to the wind all by itself. Both sails will be slightly under or over trimmed but the net result is that the boat will hold course much better and the reduced drag from the rudder will make up for the slight loss of sail efficiency and then some. The first time I tried this was on the San Francisco bay and I was able to sail through crazy currents and tides, winds shifting over nearly 180 degrees and varying from 3 knots to over 25 knots and I still managed to go exactly where I wanted to without touching the wheel hardly at all over the course of 5 hours. I also noticed a significant increase in boat speed due to far less drag from the rudder especially in light winds. All of this is just to say that if you trim the boat so that the auto pilot doesn't have to work as hard then you will probably find that it will work fine at higher wind speeds. I hope that you get a chance to try this out and that it helps a little bit! Fair winds and following seas and all the best from California! 🧡

Yeah it depends on the boat of course but on my trimaran I would just double reef my main and put up biggest head sail when I had that weather helm/ autopilot issue. It worked up to about 30 knots of TWS. Solo'd around the world on it, so it worked.

If you have an anchor trip line, raising the anchor with it is only the weight of the anchor to start, then you eventually end up lifting about half the weight of the chain, instead of all of it at once. Yes, the line itself can cause problems if anchored a while and floating rope may tend to lift the anchor a little but it may make the impossible possible and much faster.

Thanks for the great video Lauren. I'm guessing by the time you read this you'll already be chilling with your family. With regards to the windlass, is there any way to reinforce the mounting point with some hardwood under the fiberglass? You may need longer bolts but the wood, will help spread the load and stop the holes in the fibreglass from enlarging. Have a great vacation. Lauren Landers you rock.

WARNING -- For safety, make sure that all hatches and items that close by gravity, have gas struts installed so that nothing falls on your fingers or toes. Many people have lost toes and fingers as these things slam shut, often due to wind catching the hatch or simply shutting suddenly on fingers. Go watch RAN sailing to see this if you can stomach it. You have hatches in the cockpit and all over the place and also inside too - even floor hatches should be fixed. Buy two dozen gas struts while in the US - they are very cheap and easy to install.

Lauren, I have had a dream smoldering inside me for quite some time now, and that is to spend some time on a sail boat, hopping between islands, catching or spearing fish and eating them, and just relaxing and seeing a part of the world that not many get to see. I have watched many sailing adventure videos but just recently came across yours and I must say I love them. I was wondering if you would be ever so kind as to help guide me to where the best place would be to book a two week sailing vacation with my family of four (Wife & two daughters aged 16 and 13). We have zero sailing experience so would want someone to captain the boat and perhaps teach us how to sail along the way. I am hopeful to possibly learn enough to someday buy my own boat to do this. I have recently been looking at trip packages online but then it hit me....someone with your experience I would trust way more then someone trying to sell us a package. I would be ever so grateful if you could possibly recommend a boat captain or company I could reach out to. We want to see those amazing beaches, and I live for fishing and have also always wanted to try spear fishing. Some awesome snorkeling would be great and I would also like to not see land for a couple days while learning how to sail and navigate if thats a thing. Not sure if you answer questions on here, but thank you so much in advance if you do find the time to respond. Your Barbados video looks excellent, but curious if thats the location you would recommend for a trip we are looking for. P.S. - you are living the life that all your viewers could only dream of. Congratulations on doing something so amazing with your life, and I wish you all the best on your future excursions. Your style of video lets the viewer feel like they are along on the trip with you which is awesome. Kind Regards, Jeff.

Ehwww... you were annoyed for a moment :) I know, the best thing about an engine is that you can turn it off! But you need wind to do that 😅 Always good to see you sail. You better fix that anker soon. I remember you pulling it up in older video, I was surprised that you pulled that off. The winch was easier but still... respect! I would not be able to pull that off 😱. Thanks for sharing! I'm always looking forward to the next video.
