Back in 1971 I was 11 years old! My Mom's best friends daughter who was 22 at the time had the most incredible collection and taste Led Zeppelin, The Who, Doors, Deep Purple David Bowie!! So I saved my pocket money and went to a market stall Which in the UK is a canvas top wooden tables cold raining normal day and I bought Led Zeppelin II it was certainly a first pressing and the Storeholder gave advice and I was a regular customer for 30 years!! You are the expert on Audiophiles I think its a minefield here in the UK so first pressings for me! But another informative 20 minutes!! Thanks Melinda! Ian

Hi Melinda! Great video. I’d like to recommend my 1974 Monarch pressing of Zeppelin 1, mastered by George Piros. Let me tell you, I have Several pressings of the album, and This pressing Blows them all out of the water! The sound is otherworldly! Best I’ve ever heard it, hands down. I have never heard the Classic Records version but I’m not exaggerating when I say this: I have a VG++ copy of the Zep 2 RL Hot Mix with SS and RL on both sides. It Does sound amazing. But! Comparing these 2 records, sonically my Piros 1 sounds Just as amazing as the RL. No doubt! The soundstage is wide, the detail is astonishing and the bass will shake your soul! Bonham’s drums sound like he’s in the room. In fact everything does. I can’t say enough about it. Anyway just wanted to share that. But Agreed!! I’ve been wanting them to release audiophile pressings of Zeppelin for a long time as well. Hey! Maybe Rhino will do them as part of their new High Fidelity series! Have a great day

Physical Graffiti really threw me for a loop when it was first released. I have my original pressing. I tried listening to it a number of different times in varying states of consciousness trying to conect to it and nothing worked so I just filed it away. Sometime later, I forget how long, I pulled it out and played it again, and WOW!!! Where the hell was I back then? Something clicked in my head and I absolutely fell in love with it. That album is really great.

it's interesting you should say that...back in the 80's when I first heard Physical Graffiti I did not like it. But through multiple listens something clicked and it all made sense. Led Zeppelin pressings are hard to navigate, and good, affordable reissues are needed and hopefully will be done. Early ones, especially 1 and 2 were not fantastically recorded, and physical graffiti, which is a hodge podge somehow of different recordings. I actually like the sound of Coda. And you are correct, many Japanese editions and club editions are superb. The Jimmy Page ones I find clean, ok, but too clean, lacking that grit and power tat Led Zeppelin knew how to produce so well and that was the key element in my opinion. Many years ago I remember listening to either LZ I or LZ II with some college friends. Jimmy played a solo that I particularly loved, and I remember one of my friends saying that what we just heard was blues. So I owe LZ a debt of gratitude for exposing me to blues in their music. Soon after, I went to my college town record store and looked at records in the blues section and really didn't know what to get. I saw a John Lee Hooker album called Folk Blues and bought it. Brought it back home and put it on the turntable and was disappointed. It wasn't electric blues and I hadn't discovered the incredible beauty of acoustic guitar blues yet. I sought out the electric blues players and really enjoyed them. Now I love everything blues. That leads me to my favorite LZ album. Like Robert Plant, my favorite LZ album is Physical Graffiti. I have it in a U.S. Promo pressing, and it sounds great. It's a very bluesy album with some great slide guitar playing by Jimmy on it. All of LZ's studio albums are really good; they're just different levels of good. Like you, I do hope that some really nice audiophile pressings will be released from LZ's catalogue. I hope that Chad releases them as all analogue pressings. Now that would be terrific. What I'd really like to see is some AP/QRP UHQR's of LZ's best albums. I can't wait until their current obsession with Steely Dan is over.
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy Жыл бұрын
I agree! Move over Steely Dan, enter Led Zeppelin. That would be a dream come true. 🥰 I can understand the easy connection that Led Zeppelin has to the blues. They have probably introduced the blues to numbers of people. Physical Graffiti is a terrific album and high on my list. Thanks for sharing. It's great to discover a new band but it's even more amazing to discover another genre like the blues. That must have been an amazing time in your life. ♥️🤗 Take care.

@@MelindaMurphy LZ actually borrowed heavily from blues artists and were sued by some of them and paid settlements. College days were tough. I had a very tough major at a top ten university, and I'd put in 14 hours days seven days a week to keep up on the fast quarter system. Music was an escape and helped me cope with stress. What people don't understand about the vinyl records we buy is how we just don't own a physical record. We own something that enriches our lives when we hear it and makes life more bearable. By the way, I left a comment for you on your last video. It either got shadow banned or you missed it. I had some comments/recommendations for Phillip on faith based music. If you can't see it, I can at least post those comments/recommendations if you like. 👍💖🎸😎

The Zeppelin master tapes have always existed in the USA. Ahmet Ertugen worked with them at Warner US, recorded etc.. Although Zeppelin also recorded in the UK like Headley On the Grange and other studios with some big rats scurrying around I read. Also a black lab or hound dog, not sure. Hense the song Black Dog on Zoso (named from the 4 member symbols) that Melinda mentioned. The tapes always wound up at Warner US. That was a big century old house actually. THE UK Warner pressings can sound great but, in the case of Zeppelin 1,2,3 the orange label US and Canadian first pressings sound the best. As many know they had to remaster and cut Zeppelin II even though Robert Ludig (RL in the deadwax like Melinda mentioned) is the go to first and best pressing. The next best is Greg Calbi's reissue he mastered and cut using Roberts notes. He essentially redid what Robert did and it sounds excellent. I have not had the chance to compare it with the RL. This one has GC in the deadwax instead, from a 1973 issue so 4 years after the initial release of the album.

Melinda, great video on Zeppelin! We definitely need Analogue Productions to do a UHQR on them, or even like the doors, 45-rpm on all their albums from the master tapes. Chad, you’re our only hope! Come on Chad, you can do it! Just invite Mr. Page to Kansas! Ok, another option for Melinda, is to try those early 90’s Japanese pressings. Some of those sound killer. Especially the Houses of the Holy one. I wanted to ask a favor from you, could you have Jimi Page release their studio recordings they did of Elvis’ Golden Records collection volume 1? They loved the album so much, they played it over and over when it came out! In New York, they went into the studio and recorded them doing covers of all the songs. Those tapes exist, but no one wants to talk about them, not even Mike from the Ingroove who’s a huge Elvis fan. I love Elvis and I love Lee Zeppelin. Melinda, thanks again for sticking up for the Zeppelin Japanese pressings! I really love them, especially the Zeppelin II and Physical Graffiti! I haven’t been fortunate enough to get the RL, but I do have a nice UK plum label of Zeppelin II. It doesn’t hurt my ears.

I also have a mint RL Zeppelin 2 Presswell pressing and it sounds like I have a brand-new sound system. I can't believe how loud and dynamic it is. Best sounding record I have ever heard. I also have a UK Zeppelin one turquoise and it doesn't even sound close to as good to that RL. My favorite Zeppelin album is "Presence". It came out the year I was born. I love that album. It starts out so heavy and all the songs are nicely different from each other. I have a Uk pressing.

I remember cycling to our local town, from school, to purchase two copies of Led Zep 2, one for me and one for a friend, when it came out, since then I purchased all of them as they came out. I like one of your other subscribers, was lucky enough to see Led Zep, unfortunately not in Brighton in 1973, even though I was at school just outside Brighton, but at Knebworth. Good at the time, but seeing videos of them a little earlier and as Robert Plant has often said, they were under rehearsed for various reasons. I am glad that when a Led Zep song comes on you think of your daughter, children are with you for what seems a very short time before they 'fly the nest'.

Hi Melinda, as a Led Zeppelin since 1969 I have got all their albums on CD and all except Coda on Vinyl. I have got LZ I and LZ II got from Classic Records pressed at reson in Switzerland. These are, to my taste, the best sounding versions I am aware of. I have also got a very nice Japanese copy of LZII. Also from Classic Records, labeled with the Quiex SV-P sticker, I have got LZ IV and Houses Of The Holy. Of LZ III, Physical Graffiti and How The West Was Won I have got the Super Deluxe Editions, remastered by Jimmy Page. Of Presence I have got a 180g Jimmy Page Remaster, pressed in Germany, in very good condition. Last but lot least I have got the Missing BBC Sessions Tracks. That one looks and sounds ok, but it was manufactured probably in the UK, under the Classic Records licence. I hope that I have made you a little bit jealous.

I was lucky to see Led Zeppelin at Madison Square Garden during their "Physical Graffiti" Tour - Great show though Jimmy Page's hand was injured in an elevator door mishap so guitar gymnastics were few - In my opinion all Atlantic and Swan Song US pressings were superior to any European pressings - I found Japanese pressings expensive and tinny while British pressings were BOOMY! My all-time favorite is "Physical Graffiti" probably because that was the tour I witnessed live and the videos on KZbin prove that they were incredible to watch live - I believe all the Jimmy Page Remasters blow all the other pressings away not to mention all the unreleased content! Nice collection. Their 4th album is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin album too. I got two copies - both French Press re-issues (mid-70s). For some artists/bands, I am on the quest for the best-sounding version or highly-collectible one. It may sound a bit silly, but I got a couple of records in my collection I'm no trying to replace by ''better'' ones or even not trying to acquire several different versions of it. Simply because some copies have a real sentimental value to me, like e.g., the Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album my father bought in the 70s we listened to it together which introduced me to the Floyds, and of course ''Led Zeppelin 4'' LP as well, as I was given a copy of this album by a kind, caring, and loving woman I used to work with, she knew I was 70s music freak and that I had just started to collect vinyl records, so she gave me as a gift on the day she retired the copy she and her husband had bought as newlyweds. Having only one copy of these album brings a sort of uniqueness.

I would not mind all of Led Zeppelin's catalog being given the best reissues. I do have all of Jimmy Page's reissues on CD. Plus I bought all of the Albums from 3 to Coda. They were bought at Walmart or Target, I can not tell you how they sound because they are sealed and won't be open until my apartment is finished and my stereo is set up. I bought Led Zeppelin 1 and 2 in the 1980's from a company in Boston called Hot Rocks. I ordered 1 & 2 Japanese pressings I did open them up and they were played once and put back up. Over the years the OBIs got chewed up from moving. Everything else is in great shape and in plastic liners I have only one regret in that I gave away the posters to 2 of my friends, one was Pink and one was Green, they were identical. I still have the Lyric sheets they came with and regret giving the posters away. The rest of the albums I bought at Walmart were printed in Germany and they have a copy of the backstage pass in them. The Song Remains The Same was reprinted a few years back with extra albums but they are really expensive even used. I think they could redo that album as well Jimmy Page did not like the concert recording and wished they would have used better concert footage. I did track a nice used copy of the live album. I still need to get Celebration Day and the concert at the O2 Arena. I would buy all of their albums in high fidelity oh yessssss!!!!!

Hi Melinda- Great video and information! I agree with your opinions on the versions you have, and of course, the Promo LZ IV and LZ II RL Cut are among the best you can find here. I was fortunate and picked up 3 Zep Grails last week- a VG+ cut of LZ II RL/SS, a UK 1st press plum label LZ I and a UK 1st press plum label LZ IV- both were NM vinyl! No-they were not cheap! I played them over the weekend and was completely blown away!! Deep, wide sound stage, clean vocals, lots of punch/slam-very powerful, much like the RL cut. If they can reissue any Zep LPs that come close to those UK originals it would be incredible. Other copies that are noteworthy- US 1st press "Houses of the Holy" with RL mastering, Led Zep II first press Japanese is actually quite good, as is Japanese "In Through The Out Door" with "Strawberry" in the dead wax. The '74 US Monarch-pressed George Piros versions get high regards as well.

A year old, but I just saw your Led Zeppelin review. As a teenager, I didn't really catch up with them until 1975 ( the great Physical Graffiti). I was completely blown away by Presence in 1976 which was played in its entirety on my local FM radio station. 'Achilles Last Stand' became the epic to end all epics. It contains Page's best solo (even better than 'Stairway' IMO). Can't comment on Page's remastering of Presence. I owned a remastered CD of that record, which had a marginal improvement on the drums and bass. The record lacks the expansive quality that it needs and the instruments are a bit cluttered in the mix. Page's solos are first-rate though. Hope you find that ideal vinyl Melinda. Take care.

Hello Melinda ! Interesting subject as usual. Although you have a great collection already , your interest for audiophile versions are quite easy to understand : you want to make up your own mind on which release you think sounds best on your own system ? Is that a fair assumption ? Or at least part of it ? We got the Jimmy Page remasters from 10 years ago ourselves. Also ; the other official releases behind you. EXCEPT ”Celebration day”. Before I took up vinyl again , around -14 , I stood in a mediastore with the vinyl issue in my hand and thought ”Cool”. Put it back and bought the Cd/DVD double pack instead. I could kick myself where the sun don’t shine for that. Now the price for a nice copy including shipping to Sweden is ridiculous. A year ago , I thought I got it online , but it was a scam and I lost the money. Take care. A&R

Hi, Melinda, yes, I'm a Led Zeppelin fan as well. I have the 180 gram reissues of Led Zeppelin studio albums 1--4, Houses of The Holy, and Physical Graffiti. My 2 favorite Led Zeppelin studio albums are 4 and Physical Graffiti. The 180 gram reissues have superb sound quality and all of these reissues are imports. Now, as for Led Zeppelin 4--those symbols on the record label is another title interpretation for the studio album, and that title is ZOSO to my understanding. Now, in a previous comment on your KZbin Channel, I mentioned that I buy records in Pittsburgh, PA at Jerry's Records. Jerry's Records is a well known indie record store all over the world. Yes, I literally mean all over the world, not just in America. In fact, people from other countries come to Pittsburgh and buy records at Jerry's Records. It's such a well known record store, that well known recording artists and even actors and actresses also go to Jerry's Records and buy records at the store. I had the privilege of meeting Robert Plant at Jerry's Records. Yes, that's the truth. Robert Plant, is a really nice and friendly person. I had a really great conversation with him. He's so down to earth. On that day, I had bought Led Zeppelin 4 at Jerry's Records and I asked Robert Plant if he would autograph the album cover and he did indeed sign the album cover. I sealed that album and never play that copy, as I have the 180 gram reisssue of Led Zeppelin 4. Led Zeppelin is a great rock and roll band. I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin when I was a pre--teen. Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars, Alan.

Led Zeppelin was never one of my regular go-to bands. However, I do have all their albums. I feel fortunate for buying all my LZ albums at retail upon release for under $5 an album ( Believe I paid $3.29 for RL mix). It is always interesting to hear how other fans rank and talk about an album/band. LZ I and In Through the Out Door have always been my favorites. LZ I is their best album IMO. In Through the Out Door is their most progressive and enjoyable. LZ III is their most unique album. The Jimmy Page remasters are excellent in sound and curation of the bonus material. Honorable mention should be given CODA. The bonus disc is the unsung gem of the band simply because of the two tracts they recorded in India.

Dear Ms M: Loved your video. Your Led Zeppelin cornucopia has been dutifully bookmarked for a later B&W (bread-n-water) project. Thank you very much

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer their middle albums to their other releases. IV-Presence are what made Led Zeppelin. I have two of those Wal-Mart exclusives with backstage passes (IV and Presence). The others are copies of III, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti. HOTH is a Richmond press with “STERLING” in the runout groove, PG is a Sam Feldman (sf) pressing, III is a Philips Recording Co. pressing

Melinda, you didn't mention "The song remains the same album concert LP". Madison Square Garden 1973. That Album and movie was put out in 1976 that took 3 years to make for that 1973 tour. and CODA LP.

Both are great albums. For the sake of time I decided to stick with the studio album releases. Thank you and take care.

Hey Melinda awesome video as always. ‘Physical Graffiti’ is my personal favourite it must surely be the best ever double album? It’s certainly in the conversation. I upgraded my copy of ‘Presence’ recently my old copy was a bit beat up, but I picked up a NM UK first pressing for around £15 and it sounds incredible! I’ll be making a video about ‘In through the out door’ later this week - so keep your eyes out for that! (PS the copy you have is a sleeve variant “B”.)

I had a malaysian pressing (pirate) of Presence. Great album I bought in 1976. I gave it away after purchasing the original version. Great album and Royal Orleans was a hit song then in 1976.

I have a Classic pressing of Zep 1. Absolutely stunning sounding. I paid way too much for that record though. Zep UHQR! Come on Chad, use that New Orleans charm and get Jimmy to give in!

As I write this, I am listening to the LZ 3 Jimmy Page reissue. It definitely has its moments of great sound. I would give it a solid B. That's just my opinion on my stereo equipment. Thank you and take care.

I'll admit I took the easy way out and just got the entire set of the Jimmy Page remasters. The only album I got the deluxe edition for was Coda, since it has some extra tracks that were on other Zep CD box sets (like "Traveling Riverside Blues"). I'm hardly into this type of music at all but for some reason, Led Zeppelin struck a nerve and I can set up an all-day playlist if I'm working outdoors, playing through all the albums chronologically. As for the sound, not having heard other versions beyond digital, I have nothing to compare them to and they are good enough for me. (Most importantly--the pressings are flat, clean, and quiet!) Never had the cash to get a clean Ludwig copy of LZ II, so I never bothered. I do have a $1 copy of In Through The Out Door that was a bit worn, and a clean used Houses of the Holy that was decent, but I haven't played them in decades.

I can understand the convenience and value of getting the Jimmy Page remasters. Page loves them and it's difficult to find older pressings in great condition. Thank you and take care.
