This might be a nice gun for you to try out (From Wiki): .50 'ALASKAN" Harold Johnson necked out the .348 Winchester case to accept a .510" diameter bullet,[2] and Harold Fuller developed the barrel, marrying a .50 caliber barrel to an old Winchester Model 1886 rifle. Harold’s favorite load in the .50 Alaskan was 51.5 grains (3.34 g) of IMR-4198 with a Barnes 400-grain (26 g) flatnose, jacketed bullet for about 2,100 ft/s (640 m/s) and just under 4,000 ft⋅lbf (5,400 J) of muzzle energy.[citation needed].

I always thought the lever guns with pistol grip looked and felt nicer than the straight grip versions...until I shot one. Because the lever is curved and starts out lower relative to the action you have to go past 90 degrees when working it...which just feels odd. Straight grip guns lever quicker and easier for me.

Scott, this is my dream gun! After a long search for a .480 Ruger Rossi 92, I stumbled across a BHA 89 online that was at a Cabela's store in Billings, Montana. So 2 days before Christmas last year, I dropped a good chunk of change for it. The power of the .500 is unreal. If you're talking straight muzzle energy, the .500 can trounce the .45-70 with the proper load (approaching 4500 ft/lbs), unless you're talking Ruger #1 loads for the .45-70, which end up about the same. But as they say, there's no replacement for displacement, and bigger holes bleed more. This rifle is a handful but so much fun. I never saw an 8" steel gong dance so much!
@okgroomer19662 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure the hole size matters much with those 2 rounds. They both cause so much damage it's over in a instant in all but the largest game. If we're talking humans both will turn your guts into a milkshake before leaving.

@Nathaniel Shrock $2.699, people living in the U.S. are lucky. In Europe, manually importing this rifle adds almost twice the cost and needs to go through complicated evaluation processes, because the manufacturer doesn't officially sell it here and there is sadly no alternative, except for S&W hand cannons, which sell officially in stores. A friend of mine had to build a rifle stock and a long barrel on his .500 revolver. It looks pretty hilarious. Europe didn't get any .500 rifles yet, everyone is just using 308 or .338. I hope for the future to get more variety.

In terms of standard power, the 500 beats the 45-70. Most 45-70 is loaded to black powder pressures with the exception of a few who make full power loads and that's not the case with the 500, something for those deciding between the two to think about. Then there's cartridge capacity, more firepower with the 500. The 45-70 is no slouch, not in the least, but the 500 is a whole different beast with great capabilities with standard factory ammunition. Hand loading, well that's a whole new ball game for either cartridge.

I see about a 200-300 fps gain with the 18" rifle over the 10" pistol depending on the load. Usually hits between 3500-4000 ft-lbs at the muzzle so very powerful. Recoil is manageable and similar to a full power 12 gauge slug. If you can swing it and don't mind the wait, the 89 is worth it.
@KevinJohn5562 жыл бұрын
Two things I take away from the slow mo in this video. First you might wanna step back from those steel targets you can actually see them returning to sender. Second the recoil is so strong I can actually see your soul compensating for the recoil, it looks kinda fun.

The fact that you can clearly hear the cheese at 8:07 and tomato paste at 8:17 still raining down, is a testament to amount of energy being dumped into the target.

The most common platform we see for the .500 S&W Magnum, the X-frame S&W500 revolver with the 8.38" barrel, is already crazy as far as muzzle energy and energy delivered downrange. And then run those same rounds through a barrel more than twice as long... Yeah, this thing's a monster.

man i love this caliber in a rifle. its a real shame that the only people that make one ask for so much for a top eject 94 clone. id really like to see henry or marlin make a 460 sw or a 500 sw with a modern side eject design that is maybe a bit more affordable.

Hey scott I want to let you know bfr just came out with a new 50 cal revolver the most powerful ever its called the 500 bushwack and it's a 500 s and w but lengenthed to 3 inches over 5000 footlbs of energy and with the muzzle break they clam no more recoil than a 454 casull I would love to see you get one they just came out the ammo is around 5 dollars a shot but it make the 500 s and w look tiny with the length if the case please look into it and let me know what you think
@racialconsciousness69962 жыл бұрын
I'd be curious to see just how much more powerful the round is out of an 18 inch barrel with a sealed chamber, as opposed to the revolver with a shorter barrel and the big gap between cylinder and barrel that diminishes the round's power.

I really like the gun and caliber thought they should of brought out a lever gun along with the revolver at new cartridge introduction. The monkey looked like it may have corn starch in it ? Cornstarch if weird stuff mixed with water it creates great resistance to fast moving objects . I have seen an example with a wading pool filled with mix waking though it is like stepping in water however you can run on the surface without sinking . Maybe some targets filled with wet mix of water /cornstarch would make a good video ?

Yours may shoot a more powerful cartridge, but mine is still bigger! I have an 1876 Winchester (replica) in .50-95. It has a 28" barrel. I've always loved the guns by Bighorn Armory, and I'm sure they shoot beautifully, but they are a bit out of my price range. I'd love it if Marlin comes out with one in 480 Ruger, to go with my Super Blackhawk. Another great video, Scott!
