I'm in the middle of nowhere Appalachian Mountains no cell phone service just the sounds methheads and drunks on atv's and utvs. This is what happened when California moved to Colorado and before that when I lived on Panama City Beach in the winter hardly anyone lived there year round then Alabama and Georgia showed up now the house I sold for 70 thousand in the 90's surrounded by sand dunes and a couple summer cottages. Sold for over 250,000 with no visible changes except condos towering over it blocking the views and rents for 1200 bucks a weekend during peak season...only 2 bedrooms 1 bath and it's booked up just unbelievable but they can walk to the big beach clubs

Sitting on the porch with a sweet summer rain! Washing the hills, I can almost smell the clean fresh amazing smells of my beloved mountain home. Oh how i miss it! There is just something different about life in the mountains. The beauty and smells are still in my mind. You can leave the mountains but the mountains never leave you.

That song, "Praying for Someone Like Me", has to be said to be the very best part of this excellent video. My grandma (born in 1900), and my mama (born in 1921) prayed for me, and I was gloriously saved by the Lord Jesus Christ in 1978! I have never been the same since then, praise the Lord!

I miss home. It's been 20 years since I was there. I did all of these things and saw all these sites growing up. The Appalachian Mountains will always be my home, no matter where I live.

I miss home, too. It wasn't in the mountains, though I have always Loved the mountains and visited every chance I could. But I was born and raised in rural North Carolina and everything is the same except the mountains...we just had hills. At this point in life I can only visit it again in my mind and memories and it is wonderful. I hope heaven is just like that...except maybe without the bugs and other crawly critters? : )

My grandmother made watermelon rind preserves with a little lemon peel added in.They were my favorite along with pear preserves.I don't reckon I'll ever have either one again.Sure was good on a buttered biskit.

My Gram made watermelon preserves but no lemon in hers. Hers was delish also. I was 7-8 years old standing at the sink watching her every movement as she taught me how to cut them off the rind. I think when I was in my 20's I made some but don't remember if I ever made them again.

Oh I loved the picking and singing. The song they sang is just beautiful. I have only heard that song once before when a man shared a video on facebook a few years ago of him and his mom singing it. She has Alzheimer's, but she could still remember the words and chords to songs she had played and sang for so many years with her children. His name is Kelly Ridings if you care to watch. It is a blessing to watch.

Your granny is so sweet! I thought my mom was the only person who would ask my dad to pull over so she could dig up some wild flower she saw. My dad never would, but that didn’t stop my mom. She would pile us kids in the car the next day along with a shovel and bucket, drive back to where she saw the wild flowers and dig her up some. As soon as we got back home she would plant them in her flower beds. . Your granny talking about having someone dig up those pink flowers just brought back that memory of my mom digging up her some wild flowers. Enjoy your time with your granny and make lots of memories to cherish in years to come. Thank you for sharing!

I had a kind friend give me a ton of free apples. Today I made about 2 gallons of chunky applesauce. I put them in freezer bags. I've had company literally ask where I bought the apple sauce. What a compliment or was it? People aren't used to eating natural foods when we lived our entire lives like this. When I was a kid on a 13 acre farm, during the summer as we played and went back home, we'd all carry wood to throw in the basement. Kindling, logs... so during the winter we had plenty of wood because the house furnace took wood and coal. Kids today have no idea what work is. "loading up the dishwasher" is a big achievement.

Bull bat & chimney sweep time, 30 minutes before dusk, as the cardinals feed. The deer are out in the meadow nibbling on the tinder grass. Nature's music is evident as the shadows grow. I too have a creek in the meadow. I remember snapping beans or shelling October beans. My maters are slowing down but the dahlias are popping. Keep on strumming those memory strings.

@@markcarter108 Growing up on my Aunt Dot's farm there are probably two sounds I remember most. When it was time to harvest the tomatoes we would get a visit in an old school bus filled with migrant pickers. Every year, each group would have one man and one woman who could sing to make angels cry. All day there would be one ballad in Spanish after the other, each taking their turn. Better than radio for sure. The second sound is hearing my Aunt Dot yell at Uncle Ed as he read the paper before dinner: "Stop squintin' and clean your glasses!" So many other sounds from every day - but that quiet from dusk to dawn is what I miss most. Thank you for the chat, Mr. Carter

Another great video. We call Passion flower plant Maypops. That might be an Alabama thing though. I remember popping them by stomping on them as a kid. I sat on my front porch 2 weeks ago and shelled a bushel of purple hull peas to freeze for winter. I love to sit on my screen porch and hear the summer rain. Your supper you made with the deer meat and fixins’ sounded delicious. Is it my imagination or did you get a new kitchen sink? It’s nice to see Miss Granny out and about and doing good. Now that I've watched all of it... I got more to say. I love the sound of rain in the trees... The gurgling creek... The music, that was so good. I noticed some stones on the porch... is there something particular about why they're there? The pink flowers and Passion vine are so pretty. I remember Joepie Weed (I might have spelt that wrong) from when I was kid. I'm 77 and most of what I have now are memories. To me... what you show in your videos are examples of "the little things" of life. The things that most people don't see, but they are the things that put a smile on your face when you're goin' to sleep. It just don't get no better than that. Thank you❤

Oh what a wonderful blessing to have your Mom there with you. I just love listening to her. She reminds me of my Mom a lot. I lost my Mom a year and a half ago. She was 88 years old and I was blessed enough to be able to take care of her for the last eight years of her life. I'm so glad I found your videos and you led me to your girls videos too. I'm 68 and I have NEVER watched TV. I have always been too busy to sit down and waste my time. But, now I'm not able to do anything because I have spinal stenosis in my back and neck. I had surgery on my neck because I was becoming partially paralyzed plus I fell before my surgery and fractured my neck. I thank God for your videos and I love you and your beautiful family. I think God put you in my life and now I'm trying to catch up on all of your videos. Seriously, I do feel like I'm a part of your family. Y'all just bless my heart. THANK YOU!

Lovely melding of late summer harvest, scenery and music. Your story about passion fruit was interesting as I remember them growing in our garden on O'ahu in the Hawaiian Islands in the 60s. There, the fruit, called Lilikoi, is harvested to make juice and jam. Lots of work, as you have to force the pulp through a sieve to separate out the seeds. It can also be processed into a puree that makes a great filling for coconut cake...

I remember one time when I was singing in church, two of the women came up and spontaneously started harmonizing with me. I told them after the song was over, y’all made me sound good. Lol That was the way with Paul and Katie. He did such a great job on that old gospel song. No showcasing just sweet harmony with Katie and she made him sound good. The passion fruit use to grow behind my grandmother's house and I've been looking for it. She always called them May Pops. My eyes got big as fifty cent pieces when I saw the flower lol. It's hard to find in southeastern NC at least in my neck of the woods.

I loved hearing the old song again "Praying". Brings back good memories from my childhood. We went to church with a little man named Bro. Rusty Ethridge that would sing that. He was about as big around as he was tall lol. He would get up to testify in church and as he would talk about the goodness of the Lord, big tears would start falling off his face. He would start shouting (jumping up and down). He has been gone to Heaven for a long time now. Thanks for the memory! Also, I love that Gibson 🕊. So beautiful!

This is such a wonderful video. It makes you appreciate the simple things, especially family. I remember planting and working hard in the garden. There isn’t any thing any better than fresh cook food on the dinner table and then sitting on the porch watching the sun go down. Now that I’m retired, my husband and I moved back to the country and we love it.

Whenever that I did live round Bristol? I helped a lectrican, then we spent 2 hours listenin to tapes of his bluegrass band, Troublesome Hollow. Bill Cifton lived in the same village I did. Carter Fold was 7 miles away. One time my haircut was interrupted while the barber Gene Boyd played a few songs with a walk-in customer. Jack Branch gave me fiddle lessons for $20 whether it was a hour or two or three. I didn't have the money then but Henderson guitars was only bout $2500. Galax? Theys more playing inter the campgrounds than on stage. Nobody had a spare dollar hartly, but they WAS music.

The "My Life in Appalachia" videos are favorites of mine, Tipper. They have such a rich variety of interesting content. Really enjoyed Corie, Katie and Paul making music in this video. When Corie masters Under The Double Eagle, I hope she will perform it here and on thepressleygirls channel. The guitar licks from Katie were an unexpected surprise. Your Appalachian 'miller' is actually a butterfly. Moths have antennas that resemble ferns (feathery and wide near the moth's head, tapering to a point), and butterflies, such as the one you videoed, have antennas that are like a thin rod with a small bulb on the end.

I live in the Cumberland Plateau region and your background noises sound the same as my background noises. I love this kind of video because it gives a genuine glimpse of what it is like to live in your part of Appalachia. My husband and I have got a busy road behind our house and beyond an empty lot. The sounds of cars, trucks, and the occasional screaming fire truck can sometimes get very old. Your mountain peace is heavenly. And the watermelon? To me if someone asked me what summer tastes like I would quickly say “watermelon.” There’s nothing as refreshingly sweet. Thank you for the video. So enjoyable.

I brought the dog in from our early morning walk and still being a couple hours before dawn I started chopping and slicing to begin preparing my meals for the week. Its alot of work. I grew up this way and my mom worked non stop and died at 67. Im not sure it was a good life for her at all. I moved to Ca when I was 18. I would go back home (midwest) to visit every year but Ive never regretted moving

Beautiful video, Tipper! The sights and sounds brought tears to my eyes as I reminisced of my young years in the foothills of PA. Passion flowers are a favorite of mine, but difficult to grow here in Florida unless we can find a shady spot. Had one a few years back growing up the base of an Obelisk in the back yard - it was stunning! The bees and other insects were prolific among that vine!! You could almost hear them singing as they gathered their nectar!! And... we always referred to moths as "Miller's" when I was growing up - and I still do! Really love the format of this video - very well composed and edited. Thank you for ALL you do to educate and bring joy to your viewers!!

We had the "Wild Apricots" growing wild by our field in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas. I've never seen them since. Would love to find seeds to plant some. What a beautiful childhood memory. Thank you.

Here in Alabama, those passion fruit has always grown wild around cotton fields. I've played with them all my life, but would never eat one because I thought they were poison. Even after I found out that they were edible, I still wouldn't eat them. The insides are a slimy pulp with black seeds and resemble something that goes against the grain of being "food".

Yeah them maypops are good weapons. My brothers and I called them "hand grenades" and railed each other with them. We called moths "candle flys" cause they's always going to the light and would get close enough to a flame to singe their wings. Thanks for the video

Thanks for sharing. Love the videos. I think you may be the only person outside of my immediate family that I've ever heard call that insect a miller. That's what I grew up calling them, but any time I've ever said it around anyone outside my family they would just look at me like I was crazy. I feel so much better now! Also enjoyed the song. That a great old Louvin brothers song and Paul and Katie did a great job on it. Not used yet to seeing Katie play the guitar or singing harmony, but she did great.

I really like these compilations. Regarding the Miller, like so many things in Highland Appalachian speech, our people took the name of one particular species of moth and made it the generic name for all moths. One example, I recall, was the so called "Case Knife." The Case company makes all types of cutlery including a supper table steak knife. When I was growing up, the older folks called any supper table knife (including flatware "butter knifes") a "Case" regardless of who made it. "I suwannee, that youngin has done laid his finger open with a Case Knife!" I would reckon the most well known example is the Southern general use of the word "Coke" or "Cocola" to refer to pretty much all soft drinks. Blessings to y'all from Washington County.

You dont understand how much i appreciate this video. Let me explain....2017 i had major surgery, 12 more after. Ive not slept well since. Im lucky to get one maybe 2 hours at a time...just now I'm laying on my bed watching and listening to this video, i found myself falling asleep to the song your husband and daughter were singing. What a sweet blessing, thank you, I had a wonderful rest! Beautiful music, beautiful song and the both have beautiful voices! Thank you!!! I would love to listen to your daughter playing guitar and singing and or both husband and daughter singing... Do you have a video of all music playing in a video? I know this would help me rest at night.
