Hi, I've been a supporter of your content, especially your stuff on microcontrollers, ever since I found your channel maybe 4-5 years ago. I find your background and experiences fascinating because you're basically self-taught in programming and electronics. I am also self-taught in electronics and programming, with only a bachelor's in math. And today, I work as a U.S.-based firmware engineer, developing products for customers. I started my journey about 6 years ago and unfortunately, I met a lot of people both online and in industry who are really mean to me or very toxic towards me, because they think I'm unqualified or whatever else they think about me. I've met engineers that screamed at me at a job fair for even trying to ask them about their company's firmware engineering positions. Online, I get downvoted often for showing support for self-taught firmware engineering paths. If you look at the /r/embedded subreddit, you will find a lot of gatekeepers. All these electrical engineers / computer engineers / and sometimes computer science degree holders who say hateful and gatekeeping stuff like "you need a formal education in this field to be qualified" and "I wouldn't trust a guy with a math degree to connect wires from a power supply to a custom PCB". Its so tiring to interact with these kinds of hateful people. I've lived a pretty long life and I grew up poor and with no support from my parents or other people so learning electronics and computers was not available to me until my college years. At the end of the day, I just care to learn about electronics and build stuff so I can be proud of myself and my efforts. Just hearing other people spew hate is so tiring and its a waste of time to listen to. And the worst part of it all? I'm learning alone because when I try to go to these online communities to ask for help / questions about electronics and microcontrollers, they ignore me the second I mention my lack of formal background. I wonder how many people will read my comment and roll their eyes. It really sucks. I really appreciate that you made these videos and provided this instructional content because it has genuinely helped me grow in my personal journey and its kind and helpful people like you that I respect the most, not the "smartest" jerks who wave around their degrees and the list of companies they worked for.

This is a very important and well thought out comment. I agree completely with your hot take on this subject. It's pretty bad when a "specific" KZbinr defames others, using their copyrighted content, and profiting from it (as shown in his description). The only thing we can do is foster a better community and keep it going. Stick with people that are open to helping. Even if they don't have degrees (which doesn't really state your expertise as schools are not equal in their education) a sum of self taught open individuals will be greater than the close minded bullies out there that feel entitled to withhold their knowledge. I've spent $100,000 on school and I am more than happy to share my knowledge. I don't ask for anything in return. Thank you for this comment. I am going to pin this comment for its message!

Totally agree with you here. I don't have a single day of college and many people think that a piece of paper is what you need to land a fancy job or make a fat paycheck or have any kind of authority to speak about a subject. What you really need is motivation and a desire to learn and improve yourself and those around you and to demonstrate that in your work. Let your work speak for itself, not a piece of paper. I grew up very poor so college wasn't an option. Instead, I started my own software business right after highschool and just built a resume of proving that success is a measure of the effort. There is this illusion in the world and thinking that you have to have a degree, when in reality, you have to put in the effort and demonstrate the desire to learn, improve, change, adapt and overcome. A degree doesn't teach you how to problem solve or be a creative thinker; experience does. It's shocking at times (but the reality these days), when people tell you, you don't have a degree, but can show them over 20 years experience and they still turn you away and yet the ones they do interview can't troubleshoot and identify issues or provide multiple solutions to the same problem or work in someone else's legacy code.

Many of us owe you a great deal for this! Your videos stand out because they aren’t just “watch me code,” “watch me build circuits,” or “look how cool I am” tutorials. Instead, you have a natural talent for breaking down complex concepts and making them accessible to everyone. You’ve made it easy for many of us to learn. So, don't let the opinions of a few naysayers from nowhere affect you-they don't define the incredible impact you’ve had.

Hi Patrick, your first book was an inspiration to me and I used it to help me design my CNC Foam cutter for RC aeroplanes. A very emotional and honest video thanks for sharing. One piece of advice I have used is "Don't put yourself down there are enough people who will do that" During my working career we had yearly reviews, After that I was always down and my wife could tell it was that time of year. We had to do a self-assessment on how we rated ourselves in different categories. So after taking the advice, I rated myself top in every category. At the review, they asked why I had done that. I said, "I think I'm doing the best job I can if you don't then tell me what I need to do." It shocked them. Nothing much changed after that but I felt a lot better, I just marked everything as average after that. In the end, I decided it was a waste of time by poor management and why get upset about it. I just got in and out of the review as quick as I could. Sorry for the long comment. Please keep doing what you are doing I will always watch not because of this video but because your content is top dog. All the best for the future Keith

I noticed this KZbinr attacked another very kind and generous KZbinr offering a ton of valuable information in his video. Taking someones video and attacking it, while selling you stuff in the same video (take a look at his description), is a sign of a predator. Profiting on defamation. In my opinion, that is worse than copyright infringement, but in this case, if I, or the other many generous KZbinrs that were attacked would find it difficult to form a lawsuit due to the legal expenses. Ok, sorry for the mini rant! Haha!

You inspired me to build a CNC back in 2013. I based it on your 'Blackfoot' CNC and ordered a lot of parts through your store. At that time it was (still is) prohibitively expensive to ship stuff from the U.S. to Australia. You put me onto a few suppliers locally and gave me the confidence to 'just give it a go'. I used that same machine today, 11 years later. It's still predominantly made out of plywood and still runs on the original V-groove bearings. Sure there are better machines around but for what I use it for (mainly woodworking and 3D carving) it is fine. Being self built, I understand the behavior of my machine intimately, so when it does someing weird, I can troubleshoot the problem and fix it myself all because of the resources you have given us. I am writing this anonymously. I used to wonder about behaviors similar to what you are experiencing and then I finally realized - it is how toy poodles will behave around a large dog. They may bark and nip at your heels but it is just something the little dogs do to try to appear bigger than they are. The best thing to do is to find a way to laugh it off - if someone behaves like this a lot and you find they are once again nipping at your heels, it is probably because you are doing something right, which made them feel small (for their own reasons and not because of something you did). I enjoyed the video, hope to continue to see more.

I have learned that Some expensive controllers like masso are using differential 24v signals. can we make the signals more immune that way??? any possibilities?/ Or Its a stupid thing? Can we do that and by shortening the USB cable to the pc or even installing a separate PC motherboard within the cnc enclosure to reduce the usb cable length??

No, the step and direction signals are fine. In my video I show that the EMI is not a problem, but I still need to do more tests as was voiced in the comments. as long as you shield, you should be fine, but stay tuned for more tests.

Thanks for this video because it's nice to see more about the person I've watched particularly for all those STM32 microcontroller videos and moments in this video where I find myself nodding. As a result and without wishing to be offensive in any way, have you ever wondered or checked if you are on the autistic spectrum? Greetings from the UK.
@PatrickHoodDaniel2 ай бұрын
I'm tottaly in the autistic spectrum in my opinion. I had this conversation with my doctor friend (I always surround myself with people that are smarter than me), and he said: no way, if you are, you are a very high functioning one. By the way, that is a complement, not offensive! Ha.
@IansMusical2 ай бұрын
@@PatrickHoodDaniel Indeed I should have specified high functioning but I'm aware that the terms have changed in recent years and it's easy to cause offence. For me when you said about addressing your wife that gave it away because neurotypical people would not have said this, it would be implied. Welcome to the club :-) Greetings from the UK.

@@IansMusical I think my off-the-cuff diagnosis is strengthened by how I had hyper-focus on computer programming during middle and high school. My wife has ADHD, so maybe that makes a good pair. Who knows.

did Corvetteguy50 take down the video? I couldn't find it.
@PatrickHoodDaniel2 ай бұрын
It is still his latest video. He is not the type of person to take it down, nor should he, in my opinion. It is a good video that shows his character. All I can do is defend myself. This is the world we live in, but for the most part, it is a free world where KZbin can be accessed. I have no problem making a video that gives constructive criticism, but he made assumptions about me and attacked my character without getting to know me. I will always respond to those and defend my own character, but I really just want to make videos to help others. That's it.

Hi Patrick, first of all I'd like to say that I'm a fellow follower of your channel since a long time and I appreciate your contribution and the effort to share your knowledge wit us a lot. So thank you Sir for this. I also appreciate that you share this very emotional video with me / us! It affected me emotionally. Because of this I was curious and watched the video of the person you felt offended by. After watching both of his videos I had the feeling that he never offended your doings but commented it in terms of a technical perspective. Yes, he was clear in some technical issues (which BTW I share with him) but in my humble opinion I don't see that this person ever ranted you nor he ever bullied you. I cannot see this after watching his videos. Don't get me wrong. i don't want to protect this person you felt offended by. I just try to tell my impressions as neutral person. However I can understand that you may offended by his reaction but I dont's think it is worth the anger. Hope that you will see this after you calmed down. That said I hope that you keep your motivation to contribute good videos as usual. So please don't let yourself be dragged down by his and my words! Im happy to see your next Video which hopefully will show us the old enthusiastic and motivated Patrick again! 👍

Your feedback and neutral perspective is appreciated. It is difficult to perceive the intent of others. In his video, he talked about my character in terms of him judging my confidence in my approach, and that got under my skin. He also mentioned specifics that I did address (wire ferrules, PayPal payment method, credit card image on my website, and other character defining aspects) which were completely untrue. If he left those parts out, I would be fine with the video. I guess I expect the same level of respect from others that I give. I have calmed down since it has been a while, so I am writing this with a clear head.

Hi. As you are referring to me, i just would like to be completely correct. In the Corvetteguy50 video i commented ''I watched this video yesterday and i was tempted to send you the link'' , but i did not send the link of your video, but Corvetteguy50 found the video by himself before i commented his video. All that only for clarification.

Yes, you can go to the description and click on "show transcript", then select the text at the right pane, copy it, then put it into an LLM for a summary and major points.

I just put the summary and major points in the description so you don't need the transcript, but go ahead and get the transcript if you wish to use it in another way. Thanks.
