That would work mostly for unmarried men. Unfortunately, married men are automatically deemed the legal father by virtue of marriage & cannot reverse that designation, by law, in most states & US territories. There are some states where unmarried men can be deemed the legal father without signing a birth certificate/acknowledgement of paternity or ever being intimate with the woman. It’s really scary.

Meaning, if your name is on the birth certificate; there is no court order stating guardianship; and/or the child lives with both parents on a regular or 50/50 basis. And yes, they're definitely performed by medical professionals, and fortunately, modern times have made it possible for it to be easily done without being present.

Unfortunately by law a man doesn’t have automatic parental rights EXCEPT he is married to the mother, he has some sort of arrangements with the mother or the court gives him. I think in some places tho if he signs the birth certificate he also has parental rights and responsibilities. He cannot swab a baby whose mother he isn’t married to, or if the court hasn’t granted him rights or in some places if he isn’t on the birth certificate. Very unfortunate
