From what I understand "The Best Gift Ever" got mixed reviews as a special. It may have it's flaws because even holiday specials aren't always perfect, but I always thought it was a fun special to watch especially because of the songs "One More Day" and "The True Gift of Gifting" instantly became two of my all time favorite G4 songs! As for the story well, it was interesting to see the Mane 6 and Spike get into all kinds of shenanigans while doing the Hearth's Warming version of secret Santa. Just as it was interesting to see those 3 reindeer, because it was literally the first time in the FIM series we ever see that particular creature. And don't get me started on the whole scene where Marble Pie anguishes over the site of Big Mac and Sugar Belle kissing. All I'll say about that part is, while I did feel bad for Marble like many others, I often theorize that the actual reason why she was anguishing over that is not because she had feelings for Big Mac but actually because she was jealous that Big Mac had already found his special somepony while Marble had not found hers yet.

Yeah, I love the special! Though one of the few things I didn't like was the designs of the reindeer. I wish they made them look more like reindeer and less like ponies with antlers.

This is definitely my favorite special. All the nods and winks at the beginning and end it's like the writers were rewarding you for being a dedicated audience, getting all the little jokes and references they put for us. The little stories are charming with the main focus being on the Mane 6 making it iconic and accessible for people who didn't watch the whole show, and One More Day just feels like a fun spin on One More Day from Les Mis so it gets bonus points for that Great vid btw!

I love A Hearth's Warming Tail SO MUCH, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it would've benefited so much from being a long special like Best Gift Ever. Having Sunburst be the Jacob Marley to warn Snowfall Frost of the incoming spirits would've been the perfection cherry on top of the immaculate ice cream to me :3
