My longest ever stay in hospital and what it taught me | Deborah James bowel cancer story

In 2016, aged just 35, Deborah James was diagnosed with stage four incurable bowel cancer.
Doctors told her she has less than an 8 per cent chance of living five years or longer.
Now, almost five years on from her diagnosis, Deborah is approaching her 40th birthday, a milestone she never thought she'd see.
Here, Deborah reflects on her longest stay in hospital since her diagnosis.

This is so sad. She gave an interview where her doctor repeatedly misdiagnosed her. In the end she went private and it sadly was too late. The amount of money is incredible but it won't go where its needed. They never do.!!!!! She did her best, but the problem isn't recognising symptoms it's getting your doctor to deal with them quickly. May this beautiful lady RIP. XXX

My son died in 2020 of bowel and liver cancer and he had to fight to get the doctors to get him sent to hospital for tests, which they wouldn't because they didn't think someone of 38 would get bowel cancer, eventually he took himself with his wife to A&E who sent him for CT scan and a colonoscopy which proved positive he lived 3 months after this and died in May 2020. My point is that GPs need to recognise that younger people can get this type of cancer and do something about it, my son maybe here now if they did.

I suffer with IBS-C [Irritable Bowel Syndrome]. I know it isn't quite the same as having bowel cancer, but know that I struggle with the physical pains of it. They are the most unpleasant pains you could ever experience. It's just nice to know that we aren't alone in suffering with bowel problems. You were one very beautiful, and respectful lady. We're all thinking about you every single day. You're never truly "gone". 💓😘

I have/had IBS-C. For me, fibromyalgia is much worse. IBS-C pain can be more severe but it wasn't constantly there like fibromyalgia is. Also fibromyalgia is much more widespread

Radiation does a horrible number on your body even though it saves your life. I had anal cancer in 2006/7 and have constant problems but I too am blessed to be alive! I totally understand what you’re going through!

My oncologist lies to me , he told me my bowel cancer has spread to my omentum but he said it's nothing to worry about just something to keep an eye on .. until I goggled it 😭🙄..the oncologist needs to be straight with me , I would prefer that instead of giving me hope .. Deborah was really brave and handled her dying experience with class .. thank you Debs , I donated and bought you a glass of wine to see you out ... hopefully one day cancer will be beaten 👍💪👊

It`s strange. To look at Deborah she seems a picture of health. In 1969 we had the technology and science to put 2 men on the moon, now 53 years later we can`t save her from bowel cancer. I find it hard to believe there is not a way of saving this beautiful, brave lady.

Hard boiled eggs, banana, and toast. Works for me, I have colitis. I can't have anything that has a crunch to it. And that includes vegetables. They have to be cooked to a pulp. But it works. Good luck you're a beautiful young lady, and wishing you all the luck in the whole wide world. Go for it!

In Old medical journals there is evidence of hyperhermia decreasing and in some cases eliminating cancer. Your very raised temperature probably stabilised your cancer. There is new research on the benefits of hyperthermia in cancer. I were in your position I would look in a different direction of curing cancer. I wish you the best of luck in your journey.

Bowelbabe. She had to pay for a colonoscopy. NHS doctor referred her to a PRIVATE physician for the colonoscopy. Doctors are only allowed to refer a small number of people . 😞 SAD

Love you girl for your attitude. But God hasn't finished with you yet. Acts 17:31 ,,, He has provided a guarantee to all men by resurrecting Jesus Christ from the dead. John 3:16 So we may live again a better life. Luke 20:38 He is a God not of the dead but of the living for they are all living to him. When Jehovah God (Psalm 83:18) keeps you in his memory you are still alive to him. It's just a matter of time before he calls your name and you answer resurrected. Just a matter of time!

I would like to introduce you to Jesus Christ, he died to give you eternal life, his word says that we do not have to fear death. John 11:25, 26 Jesus said I am the resurrection and life. Those who believe in me, even though they die will live. He also promise us eternal life. I encourage you to give your life to Jesus accept that he came to give us life... everlasting. Just believe in your heart and confess with your mouth, you have nothing to loose but the fear of death and your sin.
