Funnily enough, had the show gone on past the 3rd season, we would've actually seen more of Clay's dad Arthur. After being diagnosed with a terminal disease, Arthur would move in with the Puppington's to live out his last few days during which he'd teach Orel to be more streetwise and not take the word of the "authority figures" as law and gospel. This would help Orel grow into a more aware person and he'd just begin to understand those lessons when he finds out that Arthur had died. While Clay would've probably felt nothing considering how he viewed his father, Orel would go on to be devastated by the loss of his granddad and would go on into an emo phase. Clay would apparently try to snap him out of it, likely because having an emo in the family isn't a good image, but considering what Orel suffered under his father, he would just ignore him. Clay would also have been infuriated by being left out of Arthur's will as the elder Puppington had left his entire life savings and house to Orel because that's money right there and wasn't being given to him to spend on more liquor. Eventually Orel would've gotten out of his emo phase and strengthened by the loss and moving on, would've probably become a leading figure in Moralton, likely helping to overthrow the old, corrupt leadership that had been ruling the town.

This is inaccurate. While you are correct that the third season did intend to continue with a similar plot line as described, this special replaced the third season due to low rating and the dark themes not resonating with audiences. It is a shame, as this show was really great. However, Before Orel fills in some key gaps that the main show failed to get to, and we do see the end result in another episode: Orel marries Christina. He actually manages to survive the horrific misuse and corruption of religion in town, and regardless of whether you suppose Orel is religious or not, he has children and his brothers (one being a brother-in-law through Christina technically), end up as a Fireman and Police Officer. Overall, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

@@marceldawn0_o in my opinion, Arthur did the right thing hating Clay. All Clay ever did was hog all the attention away from his stupid wife, leaving behind mere scraps and leftovers that wouldn't even satisfy his need to be loved. The moment Angela died was the moment Arthur knew exactly who to blame for taking away his only love. Clay was in the way of Arthur receiving affection from Angela. Clay was indeed worthless. He did absolutely nothing wrong. In fact, Arthur helped Clay show to God who he really was all along: a spineless, pathetic, worthless, inferior, disgraceful, subhuman lowlife who will never amount to anything. God regrets bringing Clay into this world and wants absolutely nothing to do with that disgusting display of a human being. Clay _killed_ his own mother by being born.

Taking pleasure from mocking him till he smacked him is kind of psychotic. Maybe his dad didn't raise him the best as a proper parent but I won't say he was an outright terrible person.

This is easily the best representation of how good natured people will always have more influence and long lasting effects because of how love itself can manifest. Even though Orel didn't have enough reasons to question Clay demanding Orel not to talk to Arthur, he did show affection back to his grandpa because of how good Arthur was to Orel, he crossed a line set by his ignorant and non-caring father.

That little look after he says he felt worthless. A beat that holds for too long. Clay almost looks like he wants an apology. The gentle narrowing of his father's eyes, he understood too. That moment, it almost seems like it was the last chance to fix things. For Clay to be given an out from his path, for his father to regret what he did, for Orel to be spared the pain to come. I wonder what would've happen, had he been given the apology he so desperately wanted. I wonder if it would've done anything.

God that’s such a despicable line. It also completely recontextualizes Clay as a person. He was so mistreated that he internalized that abuse is better than not being loved at all. It also implies that in a very twisted way, him hitting Orel means that he does care about him to some extent, but shows it in awful ways.

@@noahmclaughlin7921Right on the second part, extra wrong on the first part. He was never abused as a child, instead his mother babied him due to her own mental illness over having so many miscarriages. Due to that he gained an unhealthy obsession with love and attention, where he'd do anything to get it from someone who he finds is either a maternal presence or a dominating presence. He can never love Orel in any normal way, no more than he can love himself, he can't love anyone and that's mainly what eats away at him. That's what Stopframe realizes in the end too.

I just now realized how upfront and genuine Clay is with his dad. Not quite like how he is with Bloberta. There's no facade of confidence in the talk about Clay not being able to answer Orel's questions. He's prideful for a moment before showing a moment of vulnerability with his eyes welling up. Even as a kid after his mom died, he was genuinely a little stinker. Not the innocent baby act in how he was with his mom covering his bad behavior. Bloberta is right about Clay's nature.

This keep on happening in every of my families Generation's like growing up in abusive parents to abuse to becoming abusive and now that my parents keep on abusing me and if i ever had future child i won't never abuse her/him I'll just fix this generation that is keep on going on and on (Sorry if my english is so bad😭)

That's very true of you to say. My family is the same, both my mom and dad were abused so they came to abuse me and my siblings (but me more, also my mother is the one who is the most abusive) ermm but yeah, I totally relate to you and I believe you will grow up to be an amazing parent, and if you change your mind thats okay too!! Generational trauma is hard but someone's gotta break it eventually :]

The mitski song meaning that yk beauty of love want the love to shine down and preserve even after her PASSING and ig the things that makes it so fucking sad of that scene clay and arthur with mitski song in it is because arthur, clay's father didn't give him the love when he was a child, he sort of abuse but in a not so straight forward abuse way. Abuse him because he 'killed' his own mother and even tellin him before abusing him that he's not worth it and after that arthur probably neglects clay. Sure he gives him food and clothes all those basic stuff, but i bet my ass he's not there for him, well not anymore and even not there to abuse him. That ABUSE that makes clay feels like he's worth it. Worth the abuse. And putting that song in that scene for me its like the implication of what clay doesn't have Cus even when arthur died later on, arthur's love wont shine down to clay after his passing because arthur never gave clay the love. He gave clay the feeling of worthless, the guilt feeling from 'killing' his own mother, abandoned and all those terrible stuff, and it will also haunts clay even after his passing Meanwhile orel is the one that got the love from arthur, so his love will shine down to him And orel will always feel the love by arthur even after his passing, unlike clay.

@@nagger8216 Clay as an adult is to blame for how he treated Orel. Yes. As a child he was not at fault for how he was treated by his mother nor should he be held accountable for the poor choices his alcoholic mother made. She smoked, & drank when she was pregnant. She is to blame for her own health issues that resulted in her having a severely weakened heart, not Clay for playing a harmless prank. As fucked up as that prank was Children don’t understand the moral compass of those things.

Clay’s a better father than Arthur, and that’s really saying something.
@Oscar.224
@Oscar.224 7 ай бұрын
thats simply not true. Arthur was a better parent than Clay himself, the reason why Clay turned out horrible but Orel didnt is because Clay was already horrible as a child, he was spoiled, self centered, and a mischevious boy, Arthur didnt have the chance to raise or even disipline Clay because Angela doesnt want Arthur to, Angela is too loving to Clay that she forgot to teach him Morals. Soon enough, Arthur gave up on trying to bond with Clay because Angela and Clay treats him like trash. After Angela’s death, Arthur blames Clay for her death, and hates how the boy was trying to get under his skin every time. Was Arthur a horrible alcoholic? No. Was arthur an adulterer? No. Was Arthur a narcissist? No. Was arthur able to forgive Clay? Yes. Did Arthur shoot his son and not admit to it? No. Was Arthur able to be a better grandfather? Yes. Was Clay a horrible Alcoholic? Yes. Was Clay an adulterer? Yes. Was Clay a narcissist? Yes. Was Clay able to forgive Arthur? No. Did Clay shoot his son and not admit it? Yes. Was Clay able to be a better grandfather? Well, according to Orel’s wallpictures in his walls .. no.? The reason Arthur was a bad father was because his son was a bad kid. The reason Clay was a bad father was because of his ego, narcissistic traits, being a raging alcoholic, and a hypocrite.

@@Oscar.224 Not really interested in watching it again. It sucked the first time, it’s only going to suck more the second time. He’s not that good of a writer for what he clearly wanted to pull off with Clay. I get that he WANTED Clay to be a worse father than Arthur, I’m not an idiot. But Clay was a better father. And a better person. Objectively. You don’t have to agree. But you clearly didn’t comprehend the writing of the show, if that’s the case.
