Great idea. And having this BSF bin next to, or inside a chicken coop is a great way to provide them with supplimentary feed; as long as you can keep them out of the top. Plus they self harvest to the ground where the chickens can pick them off. Having a couple trees that bear fruits that BSF love can also come in handy as you can feed the left overs the chickens don't eat as well as the spoilt ones to the BSF and then the BSF to the chickens.

NW- I would like to try producing larvae for chicken feed. I'm in Upstate New York, I've probably seen BSF and never took notice. When I think flies, it's the common house fly which come to mind. But there seems to be a lot of species of flies out there. So the larvae I'm raising may not be from the BSF, does that matter?

Don't feed shit to the larvae, the bin needs to stay healthy and the larvae to taste good. You wouldn’t feed the chikens with larvae fed with shit btw, don't you? Food waste, dry and humid are the best.

What ever you.end up.not keeping every year. Cant you.dry them.out and feed them.to.the chickens and.ducks and other birds thats what my bestfriend does to hers before they all start dying from the.colder weather
