I started a "2 out, 1 in" type of project this last year. It helped me to actually finish things instead of keeping things that I thought I'd miss! I went from 11 empties last year to 57 this year. To be fair, many of these WERE just things I'd almost used up that I was saving that last bit of... it incentivized me to get over my mental block

I don’t know why, but I do this too! I’ll use up most of a product, then stop using it once I realize that I’m almost out of it. Like I’m saving it for the “right occasion”. I need to get over that mental block too. I think I’ll use your 2 out, 1 in project in 2023. Great idea!

That’s awesome that you stuck to 2 out 1 in!!! I started off 2022 doing that and did well….until I didn’t. That said I panned a lot of items last year including makeup and skincare. I also have been decluttering things that are old, I don’t like, will never find a use for. Thank you for the inspiration to try something like this again. I think I may try a 1 item in Jan, 2 items in Feb, 3 in March approach and then have general rules, like any 50% off ND items are not included and fair game. I think can actually stick to this bc I shop heavily during heavy sales. We’ll see!! Again, great job on your success!

Good luck! I realized once I started using up things that some of them had gone off waiting for the right time to use them... it made me rethink that idea of the right occasion- it's when it's still fresh and works at it's best!

I do a “controlled buy” with a budget. I brought in a lot of eye shadow and I’m ok with that, because it’s my favorite part of makeup. I was able to use up 65+ makeup products out of my inventory this year! I’m looking forward to trying to finish up some harder products in 2023. My makeup preferences have changed overtime and through project panning my collection I realised which makeup categories and products I was able to use up organically before it expired. This created a guide for a reasonable makeup inventory for my lifestyle. Now I tend to just use up something in a category before I buy a new one. I found the only makeup product I couldn’t fully use up is eyeshadow and I also tend to have very sensitive eyes so I can’t keep them for longer than that. Now, I have about one or two palettes and have swapped them every couple of years or so. Which helps me experiment and trick my mind that I’m trying something new but not over consuming. My makeup and skincare consumption has gotten under control. Can’t say the same for hair products and fashion 😳 one thing at a time I guess.

Oh boy inventory is obscene, but I'm working on it and I do love having a bigger then most collection, however I do not need to keep buying. This year I bought significantly less and my goal for next year is to intentionally purchase only, with some no buy categories. Your collection is so curated and you truly use and love it, and that's so joyful to watch🥰

So interesting hearing your numbers. I am not an influencer, but I have way more in every category (except just one concealer and one foundation, those are so boring to me and I have good skin anyway). I track all my makeup so I know everything is being used over the year. I'm a huge minimalist in every other area of life but being a makeup maximalist brings me so much joy:) I always laugh when makeup influences say they don't wear makeup every day. It is so fun for me that no matter what I'm making time to play with it.

I don't keep a makeup inventory, but I'm definitely always on some kind of low buy/no buy to keep myself in check. I also have a very small space where I keep my makeup, and everything has to fit in there, so that helps. lol 😊🌻

I'm a one at a time mascara girl and what I do to stretch it out longer is close to that three month mark I will apply a clear mascara first then my regular mascara. After awhile, when that's not working well anymore then I start on a fresh tube.

Also.. . Your inventory seems quite manageable especially for a beauty youtuber. I don't have any numbers, but I've stopped subscription boxes for the most part. The only palettes I bought this year were the 6pans from flower. ...I think, lol Happy new year to you, your man & the kitties!

I think it is so interesting seeing so many people tracking their inventory that aren’t content creators. I kept track of everything skincare, body wash, makeup I used up to completion about 175 items (50 makeup/25 skincare) ans decluttered about 30 products. So I essentially used up and removed 200 products from my house this year. I’m pretty proud of that. Knowing just how many body washes and shampoos I use in a year helps me make more informed buying decisions. Also…how slow I use some makeup items. I’m talking about you eyeliner! Lol 😂

I really like how balanced your approach to makeup management is, how satisfied you are with your collection ☺️ Actually we have pretty similar numbers, but for single eyeshadows (I have a lot more, I love playing with them) and lip products (those I have way less cause I don't use them that much). Last year I finished 35 products and I'm happy with what I have. I'm on a no buy (or very low buy at least) not because of the money but because I want to fully enjoy what I have! I'm going to do the #23inmeno project, it's an italian one that helps you rotate through products, as my main issue is that I tend to use always the same stuff and end up neglecting the rest. My biggest categories are blush, lip products and eyeshadow sticks. All of which need to be decluttered but it's so hard to get rid of stuff even if I'm not using them.

Sarah, I finally managed to watch most of your older videos and to get in the present! 2021 is my “worst” year when it comes to buying makeup - I wasn’t buying so much makeup not even I was still going to the office, before Covid. For 2023 I don’t want to buy anything, but anything related to makeup, as I have too much for a regular person who works from home since 2020. And I want to also start my first project pan, using mostly my oldest makeup and I’ll see in time how it goes and if something needs to be changed (thank you for all the videos you posted in this matter ❤) It was such a pleasure watching your journey in the last few months, I’m so glad that I found your channel and I can’t wait for your 2023 videos ❤

My stash is continuously growing, but I have managed to slow it down a lot compared to last year and to me that's a goal met. For a bit I just moved from buying eyeshadow to buying face products, but I have noticed and stopped that. And seeing dips in my shadows is honestly so much more satisfying than buying 10 palettes.

New subscriber here and I’m loving your content. It’s really refreshing. I did a makeup inventory today after watching one of your old videos and it was eye-opening. I’ve definitely overspent in the past 2 years and have a backlog of items to use. I’m going to do a low-buy this year because there are some things that I use up much more frequently than others and don’t have backups (setting sprays, etc). I loved watching this video!!

A few of my categories got a little out of control this year 😬I wanted to find a better concealer, so I bought a few of those, even though I usually only have one or two at a time. And my highlighters are up by a few, but most of those were gifts, so I'm trying to not feel too bad about it. I'm thinking I need to do a product-specific no buy again in this coming year for both of those categories!

My collection got smaller, but it's mostly from declutters and throwing out expired product. I bought far less in 2022, and am doing an absolute no buy for at least the first six months of 2023. In the second half of the year I will replace things I use up, but only if I have four or less of that type of item, which is not likely to happen. I kept track of my empties for 2022, and I used 91 items, including sample sized products.

Went from eyeshadow pallets to only having single eyeshadows. Found out that some of my pallets was tooo old and decluttered some colours I did not like. Started with 65 to 35 single eyeshadow. My new goal is trying to have around 20 eyeshadows I really like. And find out how little makeup I am comfortable with having. It made it way easier to not buy pallets when I have only single eyeshadows to dupe pallets.

It’s nice to see what ppl have in inventory. Just started keeping track of my makeup. I did buy quite alot of eyeshadow and lip products end of this year. Think I’ll be trying to avoid buying makeup in 2023 other than foundation/concealer. I really noticed since I work from home don’t really wear makeup unless I leave my house. But I still like having different choices to be creative.

If you find you're not using your magnetic singles as much, you could pick one at random and create a whole look around that one shade.. that has really helped me lately..

I also try to keep some boring neutral matte singles in my singles palettes, so I can very easily make a look with those sparkly shifty shades without having to think or search around too much. Sometimes I want to do the most with lots of colors, but most of the time I am getting ready for work and want to be able to do my makeup quickly, and having those basic neutrals on hand helps with that.

My inventory probably looks similar to this. I, too have less than 5 In all of my complexion categories because I know what I like. I actually decluttered most of my eye palettes and only have around 6 now. I think that's comfortable for me. My goal is to have less than 75 products (not including brushes, tools, etc-straight makeup items). I don't like to place exact numbers on categories as sometimes, my preferences change, but a smaller, curated collection is what makes me happy. If I'm using everything and all of the products bring me joy, then there's no reason to freakout because I have 6 blushes instead of my goal of 5...to me, 75 is curated but enough variety to not be bored.

I recently started using an app called GlowinMe so that I could keep track of my inventory, cost per item/category, and expiration dates. I haven’t added lip products or eyeshadow palettes and I was shocked to learn how many products are in my collection. I’m inspired by you to curate my collection a little better. Great job with keeping your numbers reasonable! (I should note that I work at Sephora and that’s why I have a lot of makeup. It’s my job)

I got to about 120 empties, that includes body care, skincare hair care and samples. I haven't tallied up my makeup use up yet but I think I am well over 1000 dollars again and probably close to 40 out. That was makeup mostly and some skincare/bodycare if it was older and needed to be out so I didn't have to store it. I think overall I had a way better year but I need to continue to learn to content with my items. So its going to be a low buy or no buy for a lot of things because honestly I am good. Eyeshadow is the area where I let myself play and be less strict but I still want to keep that one reined in too it needs to be thought out and not impulsive.

I have the same problem with consistently tracking my inventory. Have you heard of an app called GlowinMe? If not, maybe you should give it a try. It has really helped me keep track of things better.

I need to do my inventory count. I did really well on my low buy and decluttered a bunch. A lot was barely used so I could pass it on. This time around I want to actually write out each product I have so I can refer back to it when I'm out shopping. There is an app for Apple products that looks really good, but unfortunately I only have android products.

Don't keep tight track of my stash, and you know I have a pretty large one that I'm comfortable with, but I do try to count everything every couple of years. I've been on a super-low-buy for 2 years now. Having several finishes and/or shades of my base products for different situations is my powder/concealer/foundation goal, and I haven't bought a new one recently. Just bought a new blush for the first time in ages! It's the Strawberry Jam from Physician's Formula. I'm not looking to increase my color cosmetics further rn but to enjoy them before they dry up; so while I'm not into minimal, I am into a curated selection. Here's to year-end declutters!

I've got around 90 products and trying to reach the 50 mark, that would be all the makeup I need to use comfortably with enough variety in categories such as blushers or eye liners to make things fun. I pretty much stuck to my no buy regarding make up in 2022, I didn't buy ANY eyeshadows/Palettes which is amazing, i only got like 4 foundations on clearence for my daughter as she is a lighter complexion than me but for me I didn't buy anything but a like ten(ish) perfumes throughout the year 🙈 so I didn't really accomplish my no buy goals for 2022.

Makeup inventories are one of my favorite videos to watch ! 🔥 I feel like I'm the only one reaching more often for my singles than for my palettes. Because of that, I'm actually tracking my palette usage so I'm sure I'm using them. I just ignore them for some reason, it's just easier to reach for my singles for my eyelooks. I definitly have more makeup than in the beginning of the year, wochj is a daily because I'm supposed to be on a no buy, but, overall, it didn't grow that much. Some categories though.... (blush)

I have my 3 blushes and will keep it at that number, am curious to know how long these will last me, probably a few years. Same with my 2 highlighters. I tend to go through bronzer a little faster. But it's fun that I can just reach for one of these and I don't spend a ton of time thinking about what to use, I tend to use a different blush weekly. Anyway, good video and Happy New Year!

I should definitely start doing a makeup inventory as well, I think it’s very eye opening to see those numbers and also the pictures of all the products together. I definitely have been a bit out of control with my purchasing lately but I just enjoy makeup so much that I sometimes can’t help it! 😅🙈 Your numbers seem pretty manageable, especially considering that doing beauty content is your job. I’m pretty sure I have way more in some categories. 🥲
