Not criticizing just offering advise!! You are supposed to assemble them while warm and refrigerator overnight before serving. The apple butter with soak into the cake. They stay together when cut!! My grandmother made them and they were soooooo good!! God bless you!!

I watch another Appalachian channel where the lady makes this cake as well. It was handed down to her from relatives and it’s her favorite cake. She uses fresh apples to make her cake. It sounds delicious! I would like to make it at least once. Thanks for sharing your recipe. Grandma, you could have gotten six even portions out of your first batch of dough. I think your problem was your pans were bigger than nine inches. I could be wrong on that part but you still could have divided that dough into six evenly portions. All that work for more dough. The cakes are supposed to be much thinner. Find a KZbin video on making this cake. You still see what they do so you won’t have to work quite so hard and long. We do however, appreciate what you’ve done for us to make this cake. What you do is put the cake together and wait 24 hours after it’s put together before you eat it. That’s the whole purpose is to allow that apple butter to seep into each layer. And you do put apple butter on the top layer and then sprinkle powdered sugar on top of too.

My mom used as a regular eight or nine inch cake pan that she used for everyday use. And then my perfect cakes and that's how you come up with six layers. She used to make 7 and 8 layers. And it said in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days before we could eat it for everything can soak into the cake. Oh my goodness it was so good honey. You are doing fine don't worry about it.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

If you put flour on your table you roll the dough out with your rolling pin.Thats how you get it paper thin.It fits nicer in a pan with smooth edges. Your cake is beautiful but to thick.Great job it’s an intense cake to make!! Yummy ❤

My grandmother never made stack cakes but a dear friend of hers would often visit and spend the day baking. One of the things she would bake was stack cake. She sometimes used blackberry jam between the layers, other times it was my grandma's homemade apple butter. She made a thick glaze icing to spread on top and let it drip down the sides. She wouldn't cut it until it had "rested" several hours, so the jam or apple butter could soak into the cookie-like layer.

My Mom, who has gone on to heaven, used to make stack cakes. They were so good and she was a wonderful cook. Like you she made homemade bread, rolls, biscuits, and cakes of all kinds. Mom even made homemade hamburger and hotdog buns as well as homemade donuts. She made an Orange Slice Candy Cake that was so good. (I tried to make the Orange Slice Candy cake one time. It was expensive to make because of all the ingredients. My cake would not get done so I baked it longer. When I took it out of the oven, it was so heavy. We couldn't slice it or even eat it. It was terrible!! My husband said they could play ball with it. Lol) She was a cook at my elementary school for years. Back then, they had some mighty good meals in the cafeteria. Now, they all this processed foods they fix for our children. I wish I could be half the cook she was. I miss my Mom so much and I plan on seeing her some day!!

Back in the 50’s I remember sitting up in the kitchen chair with my elbows on the table watching my grandma either making a cake or pies. She would stick her tongue out a little while concentrating and it made me laugh! She would purposely stick her tongue out a little just to make me laugh and my mom always wondered what we were giggling about lol. Cherish your days and projects you do with your Mawmaw, Corey. When all we have are our precious memories, it’s what makes us cherish the Lord even more for letting us have our memories to remember. My granny taught me how to make this cake years ago. I’m 66 years old. It was my dad‘s favorite. I would bake it for him after his mom died. She always baked her layers in a 10 inch iron skillet and she put one cup of batter in the skillet and she made it six layers tall, but she used dried apples and she cooked them with cinnamon and nutmeg and sugar, and they were delicious and she would bake it one day it sat in the refrigerator and you ate it the next day, when the juice from the apples soaked into the layers, it held together beautifully and it tasted heavenly best cake I’ve ever eaten. The story I was told about the stack cake is that it was used as a sort of a wedding cake and everybody that came to the wedding would bring a layer and then they would take apple butter or dried apples in between each layer and the more people that attended, the higher, the wedding cake was , I’m from Cumberland gap Tennessee back in the mountains. Thanks for the memory.
