I wish I could study the mechanics of her voice! it's so mesmerizing how she can belt some notes so clearly and others are strained or how certain emotions seem to affect certain inflections. I love this woman!

Streisand’s voice is built on a very operatic technique, although she never studied voice, and can’t read music. She was apparently born with a technique that opera singers spend their lives trying to master. But sometimes she says some wacky things about her voice - that she “wills” the long-held notes and they appear like magic! There’s a specific technique for that - you fill your lungs with air, but use your diaphragm to exhale very slowly and smoothly. You focus that same air on the hard palate, where the resonators in your face (some would say her nose) project the sound. It isn’t magic. Of course, she’s in her 80s now, and the first thing to go in even great voices is the ability to negotiate the breaks between the low-middle-high registers. Many singers sound hoarse when the voice deteriorates and they need to change gears to reach certain notes. With Streisand, as with many other aging greats, you begin to hear those gear-changes.
