Screen legends Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford make movie magic as the captivating star-crossed lovers, Hubbell Gardiner and Katie Morosky. Theirs is a classic love story sparked by the attraction of opposites, played out against the backdrop of American life during times of foreign war, domestic prosperity and McCarthy-era paranoia in Hollywood.

Katie always thought Hubble wasted his talents, and you can see it in her eyes when he says he's writing for Television. She's smiling but disappointed. It is a great movie, but in the end, he abandoned his child. He can't come for a drink and face the daughter he abandoned. "How is she?" which is code for "How is she. I don't know because I abandoned her." "Is he a good father since I am a crappy one?!?!" He wants the easy life. The pretty girl who doesn't say a word. The easy job. No trouble, no loses, no principles. And Katie is willing to fight for everything. She's strong, he's weak and that's why it didn't work out.

Sequel:. Hubble loses his spouse, again. And is retired from whatever he used to do. Packing up he peruses old photos and sees her. Cut to moving van and car driving Hubble to high end retirement center in (wherever Megan and Harry live) and there Hubble runs into his love again. This time it's a rom-com. Yes??? With Sussex Royal look alikes and plastic babies and the real Melissa McCarthy. And a billionaire truck driver who rescues dogs all over the USA.

Two theories exist to explain her loss: 1). Her unpopularity in Hollywood at the time; and 2). The deletion of scenes--esp. the political ones--undermined her chances.
@emmalancaster2013
@emmalancaster2013 Жыл бұрын
Hollywood hates her, because she refuses to conform. She “acts too much like a man.” Hence, her total lack of directorial nominations, even though she deserved at least one, for her great work in “Yentl.” I did find it ironic they let her present the Best Director award once, probably because everyone was certain Kathryn Bigelow would become the first female director to win the prize - and she did. (Still think reigning Best Director Danny O’Boyle should have been co-presenter). Like Ida Lupino and a few others, Streisand was a true pioneer, paving the way for other female directors to enjoy the acclaim she was denied. Two other female directors have since taken the prize (although not nominated, Sian Heder directed last year’s best picture winner, “Coda,” and won the Oscar for Best adapted screenplay). I respect Barbra’s talent and determination enormously. Most of the public does, too.

This one scene really exemplifies what the gamut of emotions between a chance meeting between old lovers would likely be. First the surprise and joy of randomly seeing each other again; some small talk, her quick exit, and him not letting her go that easily by following her across the street. Then the heartfelt embrace that rekindled some deep feelings, briefly discussing their child together, and then finally, him recovering and accepting reality by stepping back and cooly saying goodbye as she did the same by ending with the as detached ban the bomb. While inside, the emotional after effects would take much longer to heal. Great scene!

⭐ Robert Redford is a class act. He cares about animals & the environment, and does something about it. He takes his work seriously, but doesn't have the typical Hollywood ego. He's intelligent and articulate. And not to mention drop-dead gorgeous and charismatic. On a scale of 1 to 10, he's a 30...!!! ⭐

It's just acting Redford had reservations working with her because her reputation has exceeded expectations, additionally Streisand was privileged in that sense because no Jewish women made it big on the big screen then or now , Redford natural blonde hair was also unusual then and even now ,the fact that Streisand may have never experienced true love in her life is evident since she give no birth to a child regardless that she has proclaimed being in love and married ,if you are not ready to be a parent or except the responsibility that comes with it well then a person in psychological sphere never grows up as they hold onto the illusion a little longer then the average that by achieving success material success will compensate everything else ,the essence of time teaches us to reflect and if you can make amends because to be honest with yourself is where freedom truly begins.

"You never give up, do you?"..."Only when I'm absolutely forced to." Those lines refer to a scene that was cut from the film; Katie realized that in order for Hubbell to keep working in Hollywood, she could either name names before HUAC (the House Un-American Activities Committee) or divorce Hubbell. Since doing the former was unthinkable, she did the latter; it was her ultimate sacrifice - giving up the man she loved so he wouldn't lose his livelihood. Situations like that were common during the blacklisting period of the 50s, and director Sydney Pollock made a big mistake by removing the scene in question. The film still works as a love story thanks to the remarkable chemistry between Streisand and Redford, but it could have been much more - perhaps a Best Picture nominee - if Pollack hadn't lost his nerve.

Had no idea, a significant missing piece, possibly the most important scene of the entire film, cut- I would really like to see that scene, thanks.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. I must have seen it a million times and I've cried a million times! My theory is that whenever he said "See ya Katie," he never expected to see her ever again, but he always did. So I KNOW they ended up getting together again, I just know it lol

I was 15 when this movie opened in the theaters. I had never cried so much and so uncontrollably over a movie before in my life- it just broke my heart. I remember watching it with my Mama. After it was over, I asked her if she didn't just LOVE it? And she said, "Those two are the stupidest people I've ever seen a movie. Love like that rarely comes along and they just threw it away, and over what??!!!" (haha)
