Cool story. I was obsessed with karate from age 5 through to 14, also made to go by my mum… But discovered BJJ at 13 and never looked back. Then came freestyle wrestling, judo, and pro MMA at 19. Much older now and I’m weirdly nostalgic about karate, kata etc. I’m impressed you stuck with karate…

How does the Dan system "works" in your country? Unless I'm mistaken, I feel like different countries (and their federations) have different "rules". I know an instructor who values more his 1st dan he got in Okinawa than the 3 dans he got in France. In France, to get a dan, it's a national exam. Note: There are negotiations I believe to allow dojos to do the 1st dan exam locally. That'd be a huge change, maybe a "step down" as having a "national exam" ensures all 1st dan have roughly the same "minimum level" (can't be a fraud and get your dan with this system). Cheers :)

A first Dan doesn’t mean one’s a master, but that you have a minimum proficiency of the basics. Now, second and third Dan by 16 sounds a bit fishy, but after 18 years of training you’ve made up for it. You should own it, although I respect the humbleness of calling yourself a 1st Dan.
