Seem like a good putter to me,. all i would suggest is locking in a routine, even when you are practising. Don’t just knock them in around the clock. Mark the ball and look at the line, line it up, believe, and roll em in 👍

When I was struggling with short putts I started looking at the hole for 3 to 5 footers alah Jordan Speith. Takes pressure off because it becomes more athletic than technical.

i always use the 3 and 6 foot circle putting drill where you have to hole a certain number in a row before you move on or you must start over, this helps add pressure to the last few putts rather than aimlessly hitting it around the practice green.
@Alan_Edwards2 жыл бұрын
Yep I love this drill. Five balls at 3 feet and I go for 20 in a row. If you miss you start over. Then go to six feet and try for 6 out of 10. Has dramatically improved my confidence on those short putts. Takes pressure off your chipping too - when you know you can sink a 6 foot putt that's a 12 foot circle.

Just a thought. The short putts on the practice green seem to be going in with some speed, whereas the short putts missed in the clip seemed to limp by the hole.

I putt with a normal reverse overlap grip for longer putts then change to cross handed for all putts under three feet or so.(right handed golfer) It definitely stops your right hand taking over when you are slightly twitchy and feels so much more stable with that left hand below the right. Give it a go Rob! It works for me.

Rob - I redid my whole bag this year including putter. I have a similar putting stroke (Ie straight back/through) and found that a centre-mounted mallet was best (I went with SeeMore brand). Also went from 33in to 36in shaft and def feels more comfortable - you should check them out!

From my own experience I've changed my hand grip style on the putter loads! I try a change and it works, for a while!! One thing you didn't mention is what is the main miss on straight 3 footers, is it left or right ? I've gone back to an almost 20 year old 3 ball putter with a larger grip and that's what works for me it gives me confidence which is nearly always the issue. One other thing I've done is practise putt with the srixon divde balls, they give great feedback, good luck with it but remember It's usually operator error rather than equipment 😉 BTW I'm not a great putter but always try to think I am

What about having a lesson with a coach that specialises in putting? It’s something I’m considering at the moment, they’re not cheap but I don’t think you will need more than one session, unlike when you’re trying to change your swing. Other than that I would only suggest maybe working out a routine and sticking to it. Practice using the routine to build confidence in it and then it just becomes a process you need to follow, accept that occasionally you will miss a short putt, but if you’re still regularly missing them then you’re routine for aiming, lining up and striking the putt is most likely going to be the issue rather than it all just being in your head, which is harder to quantify. Don’t know if any of that makes sense, the bit about getting a lesson does (probably). All a bit blind leading the blind this to be fair.

I would argue it’s nothing to do with putting and more to do with how we handle stress. Look at what’s happening with your mind talk and try to process these thoughts during your practice. “I’m not good enough….I’m going to miss this….. “ and replace this with specific targets such as, “2cm to the right of middle etc. easier said than done and you’ll need to recreate the heightened stress during your practice.

I tought my 2 boys 20/10/5. Every time we go to the course, the first thing we do it hole 20-3 foot putts, 10-4 foot putts, and 5-5 foot putts in a row. It’s absolutely easy, and has amazing results in such a shot time. That’s it. 20/10/5

A few putting tips 1. Try hitting the same putt more than once. I do the same putt 3 times don't move on till all 3 go in 2. TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe balls make it super easy to see if your roll is good 3. Watch a Be Better Golf video called "You will NEVER putt the same, Mike Malaska.." 4. Focus less on making the putt and more on rolling the ball over a spot, NOT all good putts drop. Good luck

Hi Rob I think your friends hive good advice. Playing in comps is a great idea so are doing putting drills. I have struggled with this and actually lead to one of my best triumphs in golf: Trying to do the 30 putts from 3ft. I did this for hours and most of the time I got agound 11 or 15 then would lip out then knock in another 15 easy. then when i got to a high amount and almost finishing 30 putts like 28 I'd miss again. I thought this is pathetic and thought I may give up. What helped me was not thinking about making the putt but instead just make a confident repeatable stroke. Starting on line at a decent pace. And not even looking at the hole after hitting the ball. Just waiting for the sound of the ball dropping. I ended up getting to 30 within minutes and thought I'd see how far I could go...40, 50 ,60 came easy I ended up sinking 100 and that was where I stopped. I couldn't believe I struggled for so long to get to 30 then sunk 100 so easily. I also reduce hole size when practicing now. Seems to have helped. Good luck bud

Rob, your putting stroke gets wobbly when you're overthinking the short putts. Make it more solid by ensuring your elbows are touching your body. Also, you have a habit of looking for the ball dropping before you've finished your stroke. This changes the orientation of your upper body and is leading to pushed and pulled strokes. Hope this helps!

As you’ve said of course this is a mental thing. If you can easily make 30 3 foot outs then the only issue is carrying that ease and comfort to the course. It literally is as simple as addressing the ball, take a deep breath and capture the calm of rolling in practice putts then stroke the ball. If you feel nervous then step away and go back to the feeling of practice and roll it in. Obvious I know but you do have control of your thoughts at least in the moment of the stroke. Deep breath, relax, stroke. Just like that. The worst that can happen is you miss the putt. You’re already doing that! One other big thing that helped me with this problem is stop thinking technical thoughts about your stroke or squaring the putter face. Last thought is the hole and stroke it toward the hole. Our minds and bodies are goal seeking machines. Tell them what to do and they will do it.
@Phillsedd492 жыл бұрын
Change the circle putting drill slightly. Instead of a circle of the same length, vary each individual putt in the circle, between 3ft, 4ft 5ft and 6ft. Plus a putting routine between each putt. In the video when you did the 3ft circle you didn't seem to even think about the putt you just hit the ball in the hole. In a game you have to think about the putt. Is it that, that is causing you issues? Build a thinking routine into your putting practice.
@scottladds75742 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong but from the footage it looks like your putting depends on confidence and not a routine. Even all your practice putting it will take longer and you will putt less but have a routine before every single putt. Brad faxton says that every pro he teaches has a trigger and a routine. Watch some of Brad putting videos it changed everything for me

Arm bar putter, it is like cheating. Don't look at as giving up, you can always go back to a short putter, but arm bar is the way to go, also practicing, you do not have to bend over so much and it is more relaxed and easy on the back. I made mine, from components off the internet and put a grip on myself, the long grip is tough to put on just as a tip, ruined a new grip on my first attempt
@xMrJanuaryx2 жыл бұрын
This isn't easy. I think every good golfer has struggled or currently struggles with this. For me, this stems from past experiences. When I am standing over a 3ft birdy putt with a slight break I can't help but to remind myself that I have missed similar puts in the past. Confidence in your decision making is the best thing you can have. Make your read. Take a practice stroke and make sure it looks EXACTLY the way you think it should. Then step up and repeat that with no other considerations. If the line looks different when you step over the ball versus what it looked like when you read the putt forget about it. If the putter takes an odd line in the backswing when your about to hit it then don't hit it, step back, take another practice swing and try again. You really do have to rely on what you know SHOULD work and if you end up missing it anyways, well I can say this much, that kind of miss doesn't effect your mental game nearly as much as one where you didn't do everything you were supposed to. Short putting is not like any other aspect of the game. There is no "feel" involved. It should be 100% wrote mechanics and that's it. Think like a machine and I hope it helps to know your not alone. I have seen +handicaps miss 2 ft eagles.

Very interesting video Rob. I am not a golf coach, far from it, im a single digit golfer like yourself and this summer went through the same putting woes and have seen vast improvements since then. This is my thoughts on how I would approach it; 1. go and get fitted - this will remove any doubt about the type of putter you should use. A mallet putter may be best suited to you or it may not, go and get fitted by the best in your area and this will remove any doubt about equipment or grip. 2. learn to putt under pressure in practice, your drills have to have consequences like on the course. Ive used a couple of the drills from this dr bob putting video (its very cheesy but the drills are good). kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ-4mJisoLGWeLM 3. Change your mindset - enjoy putting, enjoy the challenge. Missing a 3foot putt is frustrating but it's not going to pay your mortgage or your dinner. Take that anxiety away and look forward to banging it in the hole. Good luck and look forward to seeing your progress.

First off Rob, you're not going to hole every short putt. No one does! 2nd if you're holing them for fun on the practice green but not in play then you need to play like you practice. Next time you practice, be aware of what you're thinking over the ball and what your routine is like. Then when you go and play try to take those thoughts and routine onto the course. It's not something I've ever done and I doubt it's your sort of thing either but a lot of great players and great coaches talk about keeping a mental score card. Maybe, every time you get a short putt you could score yourself on whether or not you had clear thoughts, followed your routine and hit the putt with freedom? Its only out fear of failure that causes us to mess up easy tasks. Oh, you had a big old moan about your short putts, then said you were gonna buy a spider and showed us how good your lag putting was with the spider! Lol good luck Rob, when golf gets in your head it's tough to get it back out!

Your brain is getting in the way! As simple as this sounds. Instead of trying to miss it, try to make it! And not just make it. Make with style. Such as "this is going to just trickle into the hole, on the top side." Or this is gonna go straight in off the back edge. Give ur brain the info it needs. "How am I gonna make this!" U need to be almost cocky in ur head on the greens! Never tentative.
@ThinkingMan4829 ай бұрын
I heard a little clue in your conversations here. Obviously, pressure is a main cause of your putting woes. I noticed you said that you were afraid you would embarrass yourself. That suggests to me that you have a bit of impostor syndrome or something where you think of yourself as a lesser golfer. You frequently comment on fears of being perceived as a bad golfer when playing with strangers. You don't seem to be driven by a fear of shooting a bad score, though I'm sure that's part of it. Of course I'm sure you know that no one thinks less of you in any way if you miss a putt. They all know how that feels and they're probably just hoping they don't catch the disease! I find the same thing in myself. I'm not so much afraid of embarrassing myself, but I find it difficult to just think of myself as a good golfer. I've lowered my handicap a lot over the last couple of years, but I still don't own the fact that I'm a good golfer. When I play well, I feel compelled to explain to the people I'm playing with that I'm not really that good. If I believed in myself I could be a much better golfer. I might expect good shots instead of fearing bad ones.
