Yeah, matric marks definitely didn't affect my university marks too much. I believe the way I studied in High School was more important for the adjustment. Obviously doing well (and liking) mathematics and understanding it was important but even then my average dropped like 15 - 20 % from High School. The method of studying is so so important. A lot of students also worry about whether they had to have AP maths but truly it only helped the students that had it (I didn't) for the first few weeks and then we were all in the same storm. I think that going into university with an attitude of "I will probably fail some but learn a lot" helped me with the adjustment. I learned that the tests in uni don't always show how much you know and the effort you put in. I also learned that I learn so much better by listening in the lectures and some other students learn better by reading all of the work. Anyway, that was just my experience.
@mitch7w3 жыл бұрын
I had a very similar experience and also didn't take AP maths and agree with your assessment there. And adapting your study method is definitely right up there being super important.
@venator78893 жыл бұрын
Please may I ask, what study method do you use to study? I used to write down loads of notes but then stopped doing that because it was time consuming but reading straight from the textbook actually worked out well but I need a more practical way of studying, please can I ask, what's your study method?
@lizataljaard89363 жыл бұрын
@@venator7889 I used to make loads of notes to study in High School but in university there isn't time to rewrite the entire textbook so what I do is I listen attentively during the lectures then write down the class notes and read through the textbook as much as possible. Sometimes you'll find that there is better explanation in the textbook. Practicing by doing ALL of the tutorial problems and ASKING FOR HELP (also past papers obviously) has seriously helped me.

I've been binging your channel lately, and I must say that I am incredibly impressed with the quality of your content! I love your transparency about your marks; the jump into university does cause a drop in marks for the majority of students; High School doesn't adequately prepare students for the jump in difficulty. Fortunately, the change of environment and quality of education has actually lead to my university marks being higher than all my marks from High School! You make excellent content, keep it up!

Lol it seems like materials sciences is hard everywhere. I found the maths and applied maths modules very easy throughout my qualification. Data structures and algorithms, with that one you are happy to just get by. The core engineering modules are very challenging, you need to apply yourself. It's not about being intelligent, everyone who gets accepted into a BEng programme and not quit after the first semester is smart enough. It is about having grit and conscientiousness. Your high school marks are impressive, don't downplay your past achievements.

Hi Mitch, thanks for the video it's really insightful highlighting the differences between high school and varsity. I'm currently in grade 11 and want to study mechanical engineering at SU, do you perhaps know if provisional acceptance is required? I'm concerned I might not reach the 75% end of year average requirement. Do you also have any tips on how to study for history and if studying during holidays is a good practice. Thank you.
@mitch7w2 жыл бұрын
I am glad you can get some value out of it. I have no idea, contact the varsity faculty for more info. I never studied during the holidays but a little bit of revision can't hurt to increase your spaced repetition. Studying for history - read all your notes and then close the book and draw out a huge mindmap/list of all the facts you can remember on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Then when you can't remember anymore open the book and see what you missed. Repeat for a few days. And then practice your essay writing with extra essay writing if you can

Hey :) just wanted to know know what your thoughts are on the Engage engineering programme. Do you obtain the same engineering degree like those doing the 4 year engineering degrees? Or would you recommend doing like a bsc physics and transferring to the 4 year eng degree.
@mitch7w2 жыл бұрын
You get the same degree at the end of the day. You can't transfer from a BSc to Eng degree, you're basically starting again. My advice is to do the normal 4 year Eng program but split up your workload over five years to make it doable - that's what I and a lot of others ended up doing. If you can't get into the regular Eng program do the ENGAGE program. :)
