You have opened my eyes concerning “rote memory” the cons of it. Concerning memorizing books of the Bible is what is helpful here. I have began to separate books of the Bible by chapters and once I get the hang of the earlier chapters I start memorizing the later chapters and reviewing them more than the early chapters. Currently memorizing the sermon on the mount and while I'm memorizing I just have my fingers count up as I go through. I'm also going to make sure whence I have gotten to the end. I prioritize reviewing my weaker parts than the ealier ones. For me that means at minimum 2 weeks reviewing everyday and ideally a whole 2 months of reciting everyday.

Andrew Huberman put out a video about a year ago that suggested that if you inject super short mini breaks into whatever you’re trying to learn, it supercharges your retention. I found the video a couple weeks back and tried it while memorizing short length passages (ex, Hebrews 3:12-19) and it blew my mind. I would read verse twelve a few times over the course of 10 seconds or so until I had it pretty clear, then I would just stare off and let my mind drift for about the same length of time I had spent reading it. This absolutely works. I guess what’s happening during that drift period is a process in the hippocampus where what you just learned is repeating but at 20x speed (praise God.). I was memorizing those chunks that would normally take me an hour or two of repetition in only a matter of 5-10 minutes and remembering it an hour or two later. I just stumbled across the idea of writing down the first letter of each word and tried that in combination with Huberman’s method and I’m blown away. It cuts memorization time more than in half.

I love this. I just recently learned the memory palace and have memorized 3 1/2 chapters using it. It’s so encouraging to see someone using the same method has memorized whole books so I know I’m on the right path. The only thing I wasn’t doing was associating the numbers with the verses, I was counting objects to figure out what verse I was at so this really helps since I have the same goal!!

It used to take me one week to memorise 23 verses and still very broken memory. With memory palace I’m able to memorise same amount of verse very well in 3 days. Usually in my palace I set only the linear route of 1 to 10 per chapter and then for verse > 10 my imagination go through the same route for second / third .. etc cycle with different details.

Interesting ideas. Currently I’m using more of a rote method. But I also will work on a chapter or chunk from back to front as part of the review process, and will only remember the verse numbers based on paragraphs or thought ideas. On romans 8, for example, verse 1, 5, 9, 12, 15, etc. Then while reviewing, I’ll start with vs 38 first. Then 35, flowing into 38. Then 31, flowing to 35. This is how I’ve been approaching the problem of being more familiar with the first part of a bible chunk.

@@BibleMemoryGoal Hey I do want to clarify something...I don't work from back to front every time I review. Only sometimes, to give my brain a change of pace. One thing that really resonated with me in your video...is that if I forget a verse or little section, it can be very difficult to get back on track and remember what follows. So at least I know I can jump forward to the next chunk (vs 5, 9, 12, 15 in my example) and keep going. The Bible memory guy's method of breaking everything into lines of less than 8 words is far to granular for me. Thanks for your videos!

I have used the Bible memory app and just done Rote memorization for a little over a year now, have not memorized any books but done about 16 full chapters. I am seeing some of the issues you mentioned with rote memorization come up and I want to be memorizing full books (starting with Romans). I'm thinking of switching and adopting the memory palace technique. Any tips to someone switching memorization techniques?

It depends what you mean by “switching” 😉 If you’re wanting to start a new passage using the memory palace, that’s different than trying to place an existing memorized passage into a palace. Either way, I would try to learn the basics of the mind palace technique on a short passage before trying to apply it to a full, long book like Romans. As a musician, I wondered how I could memorize long pieces of repertoire but not scripture, we have many techniques and methods, and like you said, it is not easy. I hought only by repeating you can memorize scripture. I am starting my journey of memorizing scripture and not having the excuse that I am just bad at memorizing and will never be able to do it.

This video has helped so much! I stumbled across your video because I am in the process of memorizing James and am now starting the third chapter. It’s my first attempt at memorizing an entire book. One thing that surprised me and has been frustrating is the inability to continue if I get stuck one verse or to know exactly where a verse is and start reciting it. So this video definitely caught my attention! Since I first watched it I’ve been researching memory palaces and watched some of your other videos. I just successfully used it to memorize the books of the Bible (old and new separate) which has been incredible for navigating God’s Word. One question I have for you though is did you go back and re-memorize the James scripture you memorized with a memory palace or did you move onto something else? Trying to figure out what I should do about the first two chapters I’ve already memorized of James. I appreciate your advice!

To answer your question, I did go back through and "encode" what I had already memorized (James) into a new palace. It actually didn't take me that much extra time and was a good way to help me review what I had memorized. I feel like sometimes using the memory palace to organize something you've already "memorized" can be a good way to experiment and learn about the technique. Make sense?

Thanks for the comment! Personally, I try to avoid using the same room for different books/chapters. I’ve listed out about 15 different memory palaces and so far I haven’t used them all yet. After I exhaust those, I’ll have to get a bit more creative. But in the end, I don’t want to file two different chapters/books in the same file folder because I know I’ll get confused!! 😂

Once you start building and using memory palaces, you’ll be surprised at how many places you have. Every piece of furniture, every appliance, every tree…pretty much anything that sticks in your mind can be used as a location to store a verse.

Which version do you memorize? I'm working on memorizing a verse from each book for fun, and I'm memorizing from the NASB 1995, but I feel like it doesn't flow as smoothly as other versions. I also don't really want to switch to another because I'll need to rememorize all the verse I have memorized. I feel like I should switch to another like the NIV or the NKJV

Yea, this is tricky, Ansel. Most people I talk to agree that it’s best to stick with the same version if possible. I’ve chosen the NIV, but I had already memorized the book of James in King James Version. Instead of going back and re-memorizing it, I’ve decided to just keep James in my memory as KJV but memorize everything new in the NIV. Does that help?

I think this method is probably best if you are wanting to memorize the verse numbers. If you don’t care about verse numbers, there are faster and easier ways. Verse numbers would be like a walking Bible though so pretty cool if you can do it.

No easy way but the benefits far outweigh the efforts. The Bible recommendation to memorise is not to memorise but to meditate. Memory comes automatically when the Word enters the heart. It is anchored in such a way that the HSp can use it. When you meditate you see or imagine and become what the Word says. More than blind rote or silly association .. Let the Word of Christ dwell (live) richly in you...Col 3.16

Thanks for the comment. I agree that it's worth the effort. I disagree that memory comes automatically. You have to work for it. And even if it's rote or "silly", I think God can use it either way.

I would guess there is not a point you cant memorize anymore. Memory is made of connections between neurones (called axones). Each neurone can connect with all other neurones - each connection is binary (between 2 neurones). The brain cant memorize anymore when no more axones can be grown. This happens (theoretical limit) by 2^7,000,000,000 (the number of neurones in a human brain). Copy-paste this formel in a calc and wonder about the result. Already by 2^1024 (which is very far from 2^7 billions), you have infinite possibilites. The only limitation is, how much time you spend every day to maintain and refresh your memory. I would guess, a guy in pension spending 3h/day should be able to have the whole Bible permanently readily available.
