Paddle across the gunnel, split pool noodle aroumd paddle shaft. Use two pcs of noodle so you have a space for your neck. Works great

Man I wish I could get it done in a single carry, I think a few factors are working against me though. I am often out on 7+ day trips, I like to fish and have extra gear for that, and I like to carry all my food and cooking stuff in a barrel. I have tried to pare it down, but it seems like on these solo trips I am just stuck doing 2-3 carries. Great info and great video though!

@@AdirondackAdventures I really like that sleep system you have for the hammock. I might have to look into some of that stuff you have. I bring an under-quilt and a sleeping bag just to be safe but its bulky in the bag for sure.

Greatest video on the subject; I am planning for one-two-days trips in Summer; Hammocks is greatest weight saving idea. The only difference in my case is "dry food", since I am on keto lifestyle (no rice, no pasta); but of course I can take protein powder, plastic container with butter, prepared in advance boiled eggs for such short trips. Water will be issue for me, never used filtering system before... plan to take 4L for day trips; plus, I prepare my water with potassium and other minerals (since "keto" lifestyle) Thank you for the video, and especially for the shopping list with links!

Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Good luck with your upcoming trips! Look at the “Sawyer Squeeze” for water filtration.

Really good video. I come from a backpacking background and have just recently started canoe camping in the Adirondacks. I understand the lightweight, though I'm not going as light as you. A tent, ax, and some beers are still amongst my essentials......maybe even a NY strip.

Thanks for watching, T3PinR! As someone recently said to me...canoe camping with portages is basically just "amphibious backpacking". And as an ADK 46-R that really resonates with me.

My homemade yoke shown in this video has now become the product Bungee Yoke. A universal portage yoke for solo and pack canoes. Bungee Yoke is compatible with hundreds of different canoes, all with varying specifications and from dozens of canoe makers that include Swift, Hornbeck, Mad River, Northstar, Placid Boatworks, Bell, Sawyer, Wenonah, Esquif and many others. Visit www.BungeeYoke.com for purchase details. Search Bungee Yoke on KZbin for several demonstration videos.

Thanks for posting. Good stuff and helpful info a newbie. Do you bring a spare paddle?
@AdirondackAdventures
@AdirondackAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I sometimes bring a spare single blade paddle if I intend on getting into a narrow water way or an area where the double blade paddle isn't the best option (low hanging branches, etc). I'm not too concerned about a replacement for a potential broken paddle as my double blade could be used as a single blade paddle if an unexpected break did occur.

Oh yeah i forgot to add the paddle is held to the gunnels with heavy duty velcro strips
@eduffy4937
@eduffy4937 2 жыл бұрын
A dring with a metal wire p clamp riveted to the gunnel is what i use to lash my paddle half to. I can land at a portage, and with 15 seconds im hoofin it. I spend well over 100 nights a year in the boundary watets and that system is a huge time saver

Still pretty much the same setup only with an improved yoke. www.bungeeyoke.com The paddle is good for tripping but it’s nothing special. I’m 6ft, 160lbs.

What is your boat weight? Base pack weights? Typical total weight for a 4 day / 3 night trip in September Adirondacks? Seams like you could use a single tarp and hammock. I use the Silky F18 saw for firewood trail clearing. While expensive, might want consider a Swift 14 or 15 Keewaydin or Prospector canoe, with a quick yoke attachment system. Piragis Boundary Water Catalog has ‘Hands-Free’ Straps that would work with your paddle and fishing pole. For me I just add to my hiking gear (15-16 lbs base weight) , a CCS 8’x10’ tarp and Hellinox Zero chair, and PFD.

Great comment, Art! Thanks for taking the time to write these thoughts. Sorry it took a couple days but I wanted to give you accurate answers and familiarize myself with some of the gear you mentioned. Total Boat Weight: 33lbs (about 35 with pfd, rod/tackle and paddle attached) Base Pack Weight: About 28lbs. Total weight for 4day/3night (with food and water). About 34 give or take. I don't like the tarp/hammock combos because they lack some versatility and the potential for a problem with either the hammock or tarp to render the entire unit unusable. I love the Swift Prospector 14 and it may be my next solo canoe in the near future. I'm also considering a Placid Boatworks and a Hornbeck Canoe. As far as the Hands Free Strap...Not bad but gimmicky in my opinion. For $12 I'd rather buy another roll of velcro that has many more uses. Thanks for watching, Art!

Old Town is no longer manufacturing the Pack. You would need to find one on the used market. Kind of a cult following for this boat now but usually go for $400-800 depending upon the condition.
