My Middle-Earth Ranger "kit"

I've been bushcrafting for a couple of years now. Always thought it'd be cool to LARP as a LOTR/Elder Scrolls character while out in the woods. I feel like it would add a sense of adventure(more than what normal bushcrafting already offers). I think I'm gonna go for an Elder Scrolls theme. There are tons of websites that offer fantasy-looking leather armor, robes, gear, etc. Thanks for the inspiration, man. Love this video.

Awesome man, i went out as a nord. I had the tunic, wool pants, moccasins etc and and amulet of talos neclace. Drink out of a tankard, cooked on cast iron and slept under canvas with a fire Had a great night.

Kinda cool not gonna lie. You only have one life, just do the shit you like. There's a guy in my town who is obsessed with medieval history, dresses in that style every day, but he's charismatic. He's often working with the mayor to celebrate our history, doing medieval parades, he is proudly the "medieval guy". Now he's well-liked as a central figure in our town.

@Dunedain Rangers I have to say excellent video this brings back memories of doing Scottish War for Independence 1314, yes folks Bannockburn Robert the Bruce. Scottish Highlander Reenactment, French and Indian era Longhunter, Rifleman from Revolutionary War, and finally LRDG of WWII. Overall it's great to see people take on this fantasy approach of rendezvous and just go out in the bush and have fun. I would love to get involved but Dunedain I will contest this. NOTHING is more comfortable than a great kilt wrapped around you. Multi-purpose as clothing, plus as a cloak/windbreaker, and I might add the fabric pleaded and wrapped right could make wonderful makeshift pouches. Trust me did hunting with a friend in one when we did blackpowder hunting with flintlocks. Although speaking from experience deer hunting with a blaze orange vest was a bitch to fit with the thing. But FUN! Again great video and would love to get involved. I live in VA. So message me back if you can. Peace. :P

Clicked like from second 1 lol. Who can dislike these clothes ? I'm from Morocco, glad you did a shoutout to my country. Here men wear cloaks all the time mainly to pray at the mosque, and they are so comfy, warm in the winter and cool in the summer and you have to try wearing one to feel REALLY cool, like you're an adventurer of some sorts. Didn't even know they were called Burnous in English, thanks for teaching me that. In moroccan we refer to the light-weight ones as Qamis and the thick ones are Djellabas.

Thank you Zakaria. I think the word "burnoose" comes from the Tamazight language if I'm not mistaken. I would have loved to go to Middle Earth and bring back an "authentic" cloak but of course that's not possible, since it's a fantasy land. :D

Looks good. Just two suggestions for improvement: Rework your cloak into a ruana cloak. Near enough all the cloaks the fellowship wore in the Peter Jackson movies are ruana cloaks, even Gandalf's large grey robes is actually a ruana. From what I have seen and can recall right now, only the elven cloaks were mantel cloaks. Tighten up the seams in your jerkin. I know, it looks better with the large thick-corded cross-stitch, but even those should not allow large gaps to appear between the panels. It might help if you use actual cured tendon or rawhide threads instead of leather strips for the thread. Keep up the good work.

I am getting into LARP as of late, and I like how it can inspire people to learn real historical or bushcraft skill sets. I like your kit. Have you considered adding a gambeson or arming jacket to your gear.

Thanks! Apologies for the late response. (Wasn't expecting any yet.) Yes, historical reenactment and bushcraft have been my passions since day one, and I am thrilled to be able to combine them. My kit is presuming the character of a Middle-Earth ranger, so I would be traveling in the bush most of the time. Kit would need to be light and practical. And of course the pivotal concept is re-creating that which Tolkien described. So now, I would wear my gambeson if I was wearing my maille over it, but I am loathe to roam the mountains with the extra weight. :) Gambesons by themselves can be warm in certain conditions, and too warm in most conditions. That kit stays in the lodge until the battle is joined.

I really hope they have a good reason or explanation for selling knives under a "wrong" name, seems somewhat shady to me. But it was a good choice, Leukus are great working knives, Wood jewel uses Lauri blades made of 80crv2, its a damn good steel for knives, and the one you chose looks not "too finnish" to be used for your means. I could also recommend a romanian blacksmith to you, he has very good prices and likes to recycle steel, so leaf springs, files and so on. hellize.deviantart.com/gallery/

I'll do what I can to answer your question, but of course I can't guarantee that they will have this fabric or that it would fulfil your needs. :) I found it at a shop in Berkeley, California called Stonemountain and Daughter. www.stonemountainfabric.com/ It was on their clearance rack. To be honest, it's not warm enough to sleep in unless you are in an exceptionally temperate region. Good luck!

Bit of a long post below, it was gonna be shorter but then I just started rambling and had to add this in before I posted it..sorry for the trouble all. I'm a bit on the chunkier side of life (though I try to lose it..we know how that can workout sometimes..) but one of my favorite fantasy classes is the Ranger. My father (for as much as we don't get along 8 outta 10 times) instilled in me a love of more traditional camping (though a lack of modern noise a.k.a some kind of music, can drive me absolutely bonkers and make it hard for me to sleep unless utterly exhausted) and I prefer bows to guns due to a very high dislike of overly loud noises close to my ears. Something about a roving Ranger on the frontier, living off the land and going where they please calls to me in a way I can't really understand. If I may talk of RPGs for a moment, I dearly love the Ranger and Rouge class (rouges mostly cause I'm a huge fan of ninja and a rouge is about as close as a medieval fantasy gets to that) but sadly my play style for most games is more like a tank who charges in head first. I would love to try and make this kind of outfit (minus knife) for my next trip to my local yearly Ren Faire, my first one I couldn't dress up as anything as I was unsure of anything due to it being my very first one but I enjoyed it greatly and would love to try and get into the mood and be a Ranger..it takes all kinds at my local Faire..I ran into a rather dapper gentleman from the Steampunk world, a rather chatty and happy pirate captain with his crew (fun guy to talk to) and even Ezio from Assassin's Creed..gotta love opening day when they all show up before the themed weekends start lol.

It's a very good question! Today, in our overcrowded, polluted world, you have to be careful of where you obtain your drinking water, especially since most of us have been protected from various water-borne pathogens. But in olden days, folk traveling out into true wilderness would have access to pure springs leaping out of mountainsides, cleansed by long eons inside the earth. I think that Tolkien in his tales, speaks of his heroes finding foul water, or foul places, soiled by evil, where the water was not drinkable. There are still pure springs leaping from the sides of mountains these days, but they are getting harder and harder to find.

Well, the snide answer is, that's what I have. ;) But truly, I am sure that the Men of the Third Age knew metal-work, which would have included brass boxes. If I could find a custom brass box with tengwar lettering... well that's a dream. I don't think that a leather pouch would keep the tinder dry enough. Is that how you carry your tinder?

@@dunedainrangers1309 Hello from the UK, thank you for replying so quickly. As I walk along my hunting grounds, I gather tinder and other stuff along the way. ( I say stuff as I don't want to go of topic ). This tinder after getting back to camp, I then work it so as it will more easily catch and take a spark. This way i always have ready supply to take with me in winter although any good fire maker will know of fat wood ( Dead pine ) branches low to the trunk of the tree to start a fire in wet conditions. So I use an animal skin dried and cured and made into a small pouch to carry my small fire lighting kit. Now... If you want to put wording onto a brass tin, that's easy. Use electrical tape and mark on your wording and gentle run a sharp utility knife around the letters and peal them out. 9v battery, connect the plus to the brass with a wire, the minus has a wire say 12" long and that's your working wire. Get a small glass and fill with warm water about half way up. Add a good tea spoon or two of salt and let it dissolve in the water. Get a small cotton ball ( no bigger than an ear bud size ) dip it in and take it out. Now put your cotton on the minus wire and start dabbing away at the letters. Add more salt water solution as needed. You could even reverse the electrical tape letters. Leave the letters on the brass and remove the outer tape. Now etch the rest of the lid. We use the minus wire terminal as we are taking metal away not adding to it. It is really really easy to do and once you have a go I'm sure your do alot of etching.

@@dunedainrangers1309 Will you have a go at putting lettering on your Hudson Bay tinder box??? After I posted such a detailed ' How to do it' reply. I learnt how to light a fire making and using the Bow drill, flint and steel over 30 years age with Ray Mears, way before he became known and I always use flint and steel when I'm out. The bow drill needs to be learnt if your a true at one with nature person. I mean you can't just go to a forest and find steel and flint to quickly make a fire. Ferro rods again are just man made. The bow and drill method you can do at any woodland to start a fire. Even middle earth people would of know how to use it.

By the way, the bow-drill method of firestarting is a popular meme, but if you study the ethnology, it was only ever common among the Inuit ("Eskimo") and Northern Canada natives. But there are many, many fire-starting techniques. Tolkien mentions only flint-and-steel and matches and I am loathe to add my own spin on his epic. Thank you for your continuing interest!

I have a fondness for the "ranger" character,being a bushwalker ,and archer.However,in medieval times there were no such people.There was no "need" for a ranger/scout.Not to be deprived of my fantasy,i did a little research.In the medieval times there was a"middle class" called yeomen.They were below the lords but above the peasantry,owned land and sometimes were richer than many landed gentry.Anyway,Yeomen also held offices like sheriff.and FOREST WARDENS.So a ranger type person would be out in the lord's forests Tracking down bandits and poachers.Typically,a yeoman would be an archer and carry a sword.
