My Mig205ds Mig Welder: 1 Year Review And It Blew Up!
I was working on a grill last night when I heard a loud bang similar to a shotgun. My ears where ringing and could not understand what was happening. The MIG205ds showed ERR on display but dazed could not understand what had happened. Unit was received in May 2022 and was a powerhouse of a machine. This MIG205DS was my favorite welder nest to my engine driven Hobart.
One of my cameras picked this up, enjoy.

Last night was a first, my awesome mig205ds blew up. I will miss you but we WILL REBUILD YOU. The Mig welder worked fantastic for over a year and suddenly decided it was his time to leave.

Would you be interested in doing a teardown? I have the same welder and this would be extremely insightful. I read through your other comments, and regarding some IGBT not having insulation, my speculation is that the IGBTs terminals are GCE, and the collector is connected to the tab at the back, so the higher or lower half of the bridge does not need insulation depending on the heatsink configuration. This is a commonly seen technique because you can then use the heatsinks as high current terminals. If your IGBTs went out this violently, you probably need to replace the gate drive circuitry after the gate drive transformer as well.

I removed the IGBTs and had a short across on of the pads. I bought the IGBTS before I did a tear down and really did not want to put more money or time. The parts are difficult to locate as they are only available in China. I've cross referenced parts before just the data on some of these parts are not consistent. I may use this machine as a Tire Chock Block. Thanks for the help and I always enjoy talking about electronics.

Sounds about right, went out with a bang. I was in shock the entire night and Sunday morning but now its just funny.

More like I used the car wash in town to clean myself. This was a scary and funny experience.

My guess is a capacitor blew.

I thought a capacitor at first but I cant find any evidence from a blown capacitor. I need to disassemble further to see if I can even repair it or see if its worth it to repair or replace.

@@cutweldngrindIt also sounded like a blown transistor. Those things can be loud like their big brother transformers.

I opened the machine up and found all the 60U65FD1 IGBT blown and believe that was the loud bang. These IGBTs are rated for 60A and 650 volts. Now some of these did not have thermal pads on them while other did so there was some quality control issues. I did buy replacement parts unfortunate after removing the IGBTS I still had a short and every part I need must be sourced from CHINA and wait 2-4 weeks. I decided to take a loss on the few parts I got and buy a different machine.

@@cutweldngrind that’s a problem. Over the years I’ve bought a few Chinese machines to test, and I’ve found them to use old parts very often. A number use small IGBTs (or are even old MOSFET designs!) and a lot of them, rather than the much newer and more expensive versions which are larger in capacity. A problem with that is that they don’t test for equality. So when current pull is high, some operate over their rating and eventually, blow out. I always tell people to only buy machines from US based companies who offer stateside repair and parts. Actually, for welders that aren’t terribly expensive, Harbor Freight is the best place to go.
