Different Types of Headlights Explained
Headlights play a significant role in shaping a car's overall appearance and personality. Their design can contribute to the vehicle's aesthetic appeal and help define its unique character, making them a crucial aspect of automotive design and styling.
Headlights today are undergoing some of the biggest technological changes seen in the history of the automobile, from Carbide Lamps used in the early days of cars to laser lights of the modern era.
The earliest headlights were found in the late 1880s, fuelled by Acetylene Gas or Oil. Back when cars were in their infancy, headlights were flames, burning behind glass lenses and fed with acetylene gas. they were quite similar to the gas lamps used in homes during that time.
The first electric headlight was introduced in the year 1898 by the Electric Vehicle Company and in 1904 American automaker Peerless was the first manufacturer to introduce electric headlights across its range. Four years later, British-based supplier Pockley Automobile Electric Lighting offered a complete set of electric lights including headlights, tail lights, and sidelights, which were powered by an eight-volt electric battery.
When you picture old, classic cars, you probably imagine cars with sealed beam headlights. By 1939, sealed beam lights had been introduced, and became compulsory on all vehicles in the US between 1940 and 1983. They used a parabolic reflector, as well as a lens and a filament sealed together, to offer a brighter, more focused light.
In the earlier 60s halogen headlights instantly became the standard tech in Europe. In 1962, a French, German, and Italian consortium of bulb- and headlamp-makers produced the first vehicle-mounted halogen lamps.
These provided brighter, more durable headlights due to the way the halogen gas reacted with the tungsten. This process gave drivers much higher road visibility, particularly on high beam settings.

this was also an issue with HID's as people would get kits to run them in the older reflective halogen housings, basically LEDs and HIDs should only be run in projector housings that shape the beam, although i do have LEDs on my van which used sealed beams, but the LED housings do have cutoffs so they dont blind drivers more than normal (sadly high profile vehicles will always blind cars just do to their height) but i dont really drive that van at night so its less of an issue. although there are supposed to be LEDs with the proper filament pattern that can work in reflector housings, i still wouldnt recommend them, My biggest complaint is i do a lot of bad weather driving so the whiter LED's/HID's cause a bit to much back scatter from rain/snow, sorta wish more of the newer lights came in the lower kelvin color temps

@@jjjacer As I understand it, you can get a way with HID bulbs in standard halogen housings because the 'bulb' emits light similarly to the halogen bulb. But LEDs do not emit light with the same 360 degree pattern as HID or halogen bulbs and so you end up less effective light patterns.

@@user-kx7iz6qk6b Because of the LED design it's impossible to get the beam specific enough. they're much better now than before but they still create to much glare because they are being used in a housing designed and made for a different technology. I desperately want replacement LEDs to work because I have H11b's and they really are bad. I tried top tier LEDs and they created too much glare. Adjusted them, but the sharp cut off just isn't there!

Recently headlights have gotten much brighter. That's great out in the wilderness. And pretty bad in the city. People drive around my city without their lights on and don't notice. That's unsafe too. But very bright headlights make it hard for everyone to see. We need a city lights setting that is more for the purpose of helping people see the cars with the headlights on, but don't have to illuminate everything in front of them.

That is compounded by that addition of day time running lights that lack proper directionality and sometimes approach the intensity of some headlights. Daytime running lights should be off when headlights are on unless they are either directed down and/or are significantly less bright.

It's not about brightness but control, low beams are design to throw light below drivers eyes. They need to be properly adjusted and you need to use bulbes design for them. Putting LED in an halogen headlight will cause the light to go all over the place and blind other road users.

I've got Matrix headlights on my BMW. I love them, but I don't think people driving in front of me like them. I say this because I've had people pull off to the shoulder to let me pass. I feel the reason is because as parts of the light beam turns on and off and moves around, it confuses them. Possibly making them think I'm flashing my high beams. It gets really bad when I have oncoming traffic. Because when there's no oncoming traffic, my high beam shoots to the left and right of the car in front of me. When a car comes up, the left side high will either drip down or turn off, then it's back on.. making the car in front think I've flashed my high beams.

I am old ish😊 , I’ve driven with all of those lights except for the old old chemical gas ones in the early 1900’s. Good lights are important , but unfortunately they are often misused in the wrong application, and also sadly , they are often used by uncaring ignorant drivers . I might add , as someone that worked in car repair industry , and also drove trucks for a living for years , headlights in many countries are probably one of the most poorly policed safety items on a motor vehicle , that goes for general specifications and also design, like for example uniform headlight heights , if you have been in normal sedan sitting at the traffic lights and had higher SUV or four wheel drive sit behind you with the much higher headlights shooting through your back window lighting up the inside of your car like a bright sunny day , you know what I mean. Poorly adjusted headlights, incorrect globes and lights fitted to unsuitable headlights with the wrong reflector shape . Bright lights are fine if they are adjusted and set up correctly. I’d say if you drive highway there is a happy medium to the brightness of lights , even if you are alone on the highway and driving for hours at night , having lights that are so powerful when they hit the shiny metal back of a metal road sign and reflect back at you can really make your eyes sore. A good spread of light that is fairly white but not so white it hurts to look at is good . And low beam lights that are still nice and bright , but adjusted away from oncoming drivers and below their windscreen level . Some cars have height adjustable lights from a dial in the cabin which Is pretty cool , other have dampened height self adjusting mechanisms. Then there are the old cars that are just set at the factory, they have a device they stick in front of the headlights which shows where the main part of the beam is and adjust it to the centre line while on high beams . Of course when you put something heavy in the boot/trunk , the back of the car goes down pointing the old style headlights up a bit , you get that in the pick ups too. I remember as a young bloke driving up the country at night on a very windy mountain road I was going around a bend at a fair rate of speed , there was a very big drop down into the valley on my side of the road , and some asshole came around the bend with headlights and two powerful sets of driving lights on full beam , I was absolutely blinded for about 4 or 5 seconds , I had pretty good nerves back then , I held the steering wheel in same position and managed to negotiate the bend , the asshole just continued on with out dipping his lights . Humans can be ass holes sometimes . I must confess , I probably like leds the best because they light up instantly, they don’t need a few seconds to warm up. Although my current lights in my car are HID with the correct reflector on low beam and the original old halogen globes for the seperate high beam lights , which I have to say are just adequate , however they are very comfortable for driving for hours at night . Here is another little bit of trivia , blue is the hardest color of the light spectrum to see and look at , if you look at the dash lights of many modern cars they are a pretty blue , and people always like the pretty blue and no doubt that is why most car makers use it , but the fact is , blue is actually sub optimal, the best color for long distance night driving that is easier on the eyes is actually red. As an old truck driver at one stage I did a fatigue management course , and this one of the topics mentioned for long distance driving. And having driven many many big rigs over the years , I can confirm red hurts the eyes less.

I've added a $30 single row 22" light bar to my Jeep Cherokee that comes on automatically with when I turn the brights on, I can see much farther down the road. Whoever put yours on didn't do it right or they got a flood instead of a spot beam pattern. Mine is a cross between flood and spot. The outer lights are flood which really light up the sides of the road way better. The center ones are spot and shine light way farther down the road than using just the high beam of the HID lights. (mine use the shutter style). All that with the light bar mounted below the front license plate. If it was mounted higher I would get even more performance out of it.

The main problem with LED headlights is that are too bright on some cars and can blind you. For example, if you driving a sedan and there is a big truck behind you, it's headlights will shine in your car. Also, if the LED light malfuctions, you cannot just replace the bulb as it is not a regular bulb like halgeon are. Instead, you have to replace the entire headlight assembly. This is true on the 2014 and newer Toyota Corolla.

Pretty nice historical summary. It should be mentioned that it's not only about brightness, intensity, or color temperature. Modern headlamps need to have a good contrast (ratio of intensity between areas where they would potentially glare others and where high intensity is needed for visibility). A lot of people here confuse bright headlights with dazzling ones. Regulations allow a lot of flexibility here and there are bad examples even on new cars. Watch out for a good IIHS headlamp rating in the US market. Manufacturers can only achieve a good rating in this test when both range and low glare risk is achieved. Glaring headlamps are often adjusted wrong or modified by people who don't know what they're doing or if manufacturers are trying to save money. Technically Laser and LED headlights are most suitable to design high performance headlights which achieve great visibility and low glare. Sophisticated optical concepts and adaptive headlamp systems take this to the next level.

As far as I know, on low beam any type of headlight technology should not blind oncoming traffic if adjusted properly. That amounts to the beam being cut off before it reaches the oncoming driver. As far as high beams go, the onus is on the driver to cut to low before oncoming traffic can be blinded.
@NatesHomeTours
@NatesHomeTours 2 күн бұрын
The one innovation that all truck makers need to implement would be auto adjusting lights. So when you attach a trailer, it measures the amount of squat and adjusts the headlights down accordingly, so as not to be blinding. When the front of the truck is angled up due to squat, it changes the angle of the cutoff line and the headlight becomes blinding.

My car came with adaptive HID projectors (aka xenon) as standard equipment. I then decided to upgrade to LED using a fully plug and play LED and compared them driving on a rural road in total darkness and both performer extremely well thus using the high beam almost optional since the low beam even have excellent range. The problem is when people mess with the height adjustments, not knowing what they are doing, or they put LED bulbs in housings that are not designed for LEDs. I've driven cars with most of those technologies, but the oldest with the chemical system. Things have improved tremendously, and it's for the better. The problem with newer technologies is when you try to retrofit them in old applications. Xenon and LED systems are fine when they are designed for that specific purpose from the ground up. In some instances, you can use LED bulbs in older cars with decent results, but some things must be kept in mind. First, you need high-quality LED bulbs or sealed beams (They are not cheap) and must also align your headlight properly. Sometimes, even that won't work.

There is also this misconception that 6500k being the "daylight" color ia the best option for visibility. Based on trial and error I find the 4000k range to offer the best balance between visibility and comfort to the eyes, the 6500k scatters too much in rain and wet surfaces simply absorb it.

the solution is decent street light that illuminate the road so it can be seen clearly, not more and more ridiculously uber bright headlights.. maybe you can use those in some rural area with no street lamps

I’ve had al kind of lighting from halogen in the 80’s till in got xenon on my BMW 320i in 2013, till my 2nd BMW with adaptive laser lights. Everytime it got better with every new technology. With the adaptive laser lights I can drive all the time with high beams, because the light beam is adjusted to the car coming toward me or the car I’m driving behind. The only drawback of these super bright lights is that road signs with reflective material are just to bright you almost want to put on sunglasses at night.

Halogen setup is best. Functional, bright, good spread, yellowish. Xenon and Led are too white for pitch black and rainy season wet roads. Plus they make you blind, if oncoming vehicle has one.

I can't see more than 20m ahead with halogens if it's dark and raining. That's my experience with two cars, both having clear lenses and decent bulbs. Now i have a car with xenons and the next winter is gonna be a lot more comfortable.

@@idkwuisp7626 Maybe it is different type of reflector material they use in your country? Or different type of asphalt mixture, idk. Or maybe different genetics and colour spectrum of eyes? But xenon on snowish white is really bad at reflecting back into retina, Good luck...

At 13:20 you stated that it is impossible to retrofit LED bulbs to older headlight assemblies. That is not correct. There are manufacturers making LED retrofit bulbs with small lenses over the LED array that mimic a traditional halogen H4 bulb. Using a light meter on a 6” grid at 100 feet I was able to match the beam pattern within 5%, LED vs halogen. It did require some adjustment of the reflector but nothing I couldn’t do with a screwdriver. It does require some time, about an hour, but in 5 years I’ve never had anyone flash their lights and everyone I ask says that they are fine.

surprised to find the old lights to be interesting. Laser part a bit too short or lacking, equivalent to the amount of information BMW released when the announced the laser light. LEP light is dropping recently. I will also not be surprised for three laser or RGB for headlights because high end projectors use this type of configuration.

Turning headlights are not adaptive headlights. Adaptive headlights have different light patterns for different conditions. Adaptive headlights can be made using a xenon bulb, not all are led

Two issues with the later ultra bright headlamps. 1. They still blind on coming drivers when the vehicle they are fitted to hits a bump or goes over a crest in the road. 2. if you need headlamps that bright you are either going too fast / need your eyes testing / need to take your sunglasses off!
@NatesHomeTours

Or you want the headlights to shine farther down road and into the ditches, so you can see the deer that like to come out at night sooner and not hit them, so you don't destroy your vehicle. The farther down the road you can see the deer the better chance you have of braking and not hitting them.

The real problem with LED is the high blue light content. This blue light is not much of a problem in normal conditions...It's a huge problem in wet conditions. The blue light scatters easily off water particles or even dirt/salt on the windshield. This creates a glare. GLARE IS REAL but very difficult to measure. There are highway driving videos that show LED streetlighting and HPS side by side done in the rain. You'll see under HPS, the orange light cuts right thru the rain and wet surface to provide decent visibility...The Blue LED light scatters, and everything appears very dark because too much stray light is entering the eye. The LED lighting gives a false confidence of visibility when glare produces significant gaps in visibility. Additionally, old people are far more affected by blue light glare than young people. The cornea yellows with age and blue light scatters passing thru the yellow lens, making everything in the field of view appear darker as a result. That's why old people HATE cars that use white headlights and young people don't really understand why. The young people generally think those old people just don't like the new white color or are exaggerating the glare. I'm a lighting engineer...I could go into the details of Rayleigh scattering, veiling luminance, and disability glare from cold white light - the effects on visibility especially for the elderly, and especially during inclement conditions (rain, fog or snow)...But the bottom line is that all street lighting and headlights should be warm white 3000K CCT max, though I'd push for warmer 2700K.

The evolvement of headlights is just stunning. I recently put H4 LED in my old 1997 car with reflector headlights. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHncpKN8o8ychZo It needed new headlight units because the reflector got dull, so with a brand new clear reflector I wanted to try LED. There are a lot of H4 and H7 LED types from countless brands, but most are not good. When research well, you can find models that actually produce halogen-style light pattern without scattering/blinding. So you really can't just say it's not gonna work, because it does work! The most important is to have the actual LED's in exactly the same location as a halogen filament. Only 1 mm up or down ruins the light pattern. But there are manufacturers who does that really well and it works great without blinding anybody. And again, clear glass and reflector as a true mirror is mandatory. And ofcourse height-adjustments doing right!
